Look! It's a giant turkey leg in the sky! One of their turkey legs became famous. Read about it at: www.spudart.org/blogs/randomthoughts_comments/5425_0_3_0_C/

We space-time warp over to the 3rd floor of the Lill Street Art Center. It's a nice big room with lots of space.

Walk-through of my setup:

1) Printout of everybody's generous helpful votes from the Facebook album.

2) Heat gun

3) Heating pan with bowl of melted wax set to 225°

4) Gesso'ed board (without wax, we'll get there!)

5) My toolbox with all my super encaustic supplies

6) Handy dandy aluminum foil roll

7) Paper towels

8) Rubbing spoon with folded paper towel

9) An board in progress (waxed with image applied) but I didn't rub off all the paper

10) Paper removal station with sponges and can of water

11) Printouts for the next print! They are standing at attention ready to be deployed.

12) Garbage can, cuz we don't throw things on the floor. We are artists, not barbarians!

brightly hued sunsets. soft water. waves washing over weathered stones. water. water. water. swell. off into the pale horizon. as far as the eyes can see. eyelids squinting only to see. hoping to see something familiar. maybe a piece of land. a house. a home. past the sea. past the ocean. past the swells. past the boats and the ships. past the grey clouds. past the horizon. and then maybe I could see. maybe then I would see you. you with eyes like rain that falls on a stormy day. you with hands like faded curtains that flow in the breeze. you with a soul as deep as the sea. you with a heart like glass that has been softened by the tide. the tide that ebbs and flows. if I could see you. If I could find you.

Here's a couple paper airplanes made from paper printed with tulip images. Some flying tulips for May. When I threw them over the L station platform, they both immediately sunk to the ground. I need to learn the wind currents at Randolph/Wabash downtown.

The cashier was really cool. I let him in on what I was trying to do, and he controlled the checkout pace to try to hit it right on the dot.

Another day done at work and on my way home. Off to the left is the UPS Sacramento HUB at Mather Field and off to my right another gorgeous sunset in my view. Moments likes these I think of my nephew that recently died as a result of a driver running a red light. I know he is in a better place and I know that he is watching over his family but his physical presence is still missed. On some days it hurts more than on other days. We are approaching year #2 and I have to say although their are still many days of tears that fall the bite of the pain isn't quite as strong. Death is inevitable but it is so dang painful. I am just thankful for the memories filled with lots of love and laughter that get me through those moments when I think of him and wish I could see him, hear his voice and give him a hug. {Random Thought 7.6.13}

And then we rub like we never rubbed before. Seriously. To make sure the photo transfers onto the wax, you have to rub this sucker HARD. I like to put all my weight onto the spoon as i rub. I'll rub so hard, that the wax underneath will move around. You need a really sturdy table for this. If your table is not sturdy, it's gonna be really frustrating.

Also, that spoon is gonna get REALLY hot if you are rubbing it right. Seriously. It's metal. It gets hot! I fold up a paper towl and put it in the bowl of the spoon. You know what else is cool about spoons? You can use one hand to press down on the bowl of the spoon, and use the other hand to hold the handle. One hand is pressing down. The other hand is guiding the spoon around.

Don't bother trying to use that wooden tool just to the left. I tried that on one of my photos and it sucked big time. Half the image didn't transfer! Wooden ceramics tool, you need to stay in the ceramics department where you belong!

Was I too mean to the wooden ceramics tool?

Another thing. When you think you've rubbed it enough, repeat the rubbing and spend twice as much time as you think you'd need. This part is really important.

This piece was selling for $11,000 by London's Woolf Gallery at ArtChicago; which seems a lot for a bunch of Rubik's cubes, but think about it. If a Rubik's cube sells for $11, then it would cost $8,448 to buy 768 of them. However, I'm assuming if you are buying 768 Rubik's cubes, then you'll get a massive discount. But even then, let's say you get them for half off, then that's $4,224.

And then all the time spent getting each cube to have the right color. But that shouldn't be too hard, because you only have to get the right color combination on one face.

I'd like to see what the back of the sculpture looks like. It's nice that the artist and gallery offers us a view of the side. Actually, that's what made me realize they are rubik's cubes. Which having the side of the artwork reveal the medium is interesting. But then that's what people often do when looking at a painting or a uniquely created photo. You look at the edge to see what it's on.

One other thing. The number of Rubik's cubes are incorrect in the label. There are 22 cubes wide. 32 cubes high. That makes for 704 cubes, not 768.

You can't undo what you did in the past, but you can start a new future. Have faith, be confident, and step forward!! Sometimes when you start a new future it means that you no longer have some of the same people from your past in your future. Sometimes, that is not a bad thing. ......I am walking into my destiny. {Random Thoughts 11.7.10}

So fun that one of my drawing-on-photos made the top ten list. The setting sun helps to add to the life of the original photo. I walk by this planter quite frequently (almost every day) either going to lunch or on my way home. This particular day the plants struck me with how the light was sitting on the plants making them seem like a big huge monster. The overflowing and rising sweetpotato vines made this whole installation quite monstrous.

Photographing this beast from a lower angle helped to give it a more ominous feel. I took several shots with various people walking by trying to strike the right cord of having people in the shot for scale, but to not have the people distract from the featured creature. The two people in the background give good context, but they don't overwhelm. In fact, it's funny how they are so oblivious to the supernatural personality sitting right in front of them!

I went through a couple revisions of the monster finally settling on this one. His robustness matches the heft of the round planter. The position of his horns are nice, because it makes reinforce the lower perspective of the photo. His mouth is so wide open, you want to jump inside. The dimensionality of his arms help to reinforce his rotund body.

The pink flowers add a nice touch to this big guy.

"never to end a day accompanied with hatred and anger,

replace it with forgiveness and a good humane judgment...

then that's the time you can sleep early..."

I woke up this day with alot on my mind. I wanted to be by myself and just be with my thoughts. I needed a place to think. This is where I ended up - Tybee Island. Sitting on the beach and listening to the waves as they rolled in and rolled out helped me to put things in the right perspective. I was looking forward to returning home to see some of the key people in my life that I had missed while I was away on my family trip. {Random Thoughts 9.17.10}

A fairly crowded photograph. The building reminds me of Lego pieces and that is strange because I never played with Lego.
