A good ol' dramatic shot of a classic building. It's amazing what an iPhone can capture. The duotone also helps heighten the drama, along with the focused square cropping. All the noise on the street level is eliminated. View the original, unaltered photo.

How the Chicago Fire Festival was like being at an Olympics opening ceremony
www.spudart.org/blogs/randomthoughts_comments/5944_0_3_0_...
Redmoon, in partnership with the City of Chicago and the Chicago Park District, has created the Great Chicago Fire Festival; a free event to unite Chicago’s neighborhoods and celebrate Chicago’s grit, greatness and renewal following the fire of 1871. This summer, Redmoon partnered with over 30 community-based organizations across 15 neighborhoods, bringing out its unique machinery and theatrical skill in an unprecedented city-wide conversation on overcoming and celebrating. The inaugural Great Chicago Fire Festival will light up the city with a spectacle of fire celebrating the city’s citizens and neighborhoods on the Chicago River.

Day 108 (04.17.2012)
"Someday you will find me caught beneath the landslide, in a champagne supernova in the sky."
How come every time I see a Nova this song pops into my head and I can't get it out?
Just my random thought of the day....
Going for a walk in this park is always like taking in a breath of fresh air. As I walk I am able to contemplate, reflect, restore and renew. Sometimes only some of these things, all or at times (although rare) none.
As I looked at this picture I was encouraged and yes inspired as I reflected on several of the 2021 Inaugurate events I was able to view via modern technology. Everything was so well put together: The National COVID-19 Memorial, We Are One Celebration recognizing the placement, importance and value of a HBCU education and the Inaugural Ceremonies. Very little sleep but I'll catch up on that this weekend.
With this new Administration I feel like together we can face tomorrow, with our chin up because we stronger and more resilient.
I could not but help shed a tear as Kamala took her oath and the words of the young poet laureate resonated deep. The first week of 2021 started with challenges and I am sure there are more to be faced but I am encouraged and truly believe "Together We are Stronger". {Random Thoughts 1.23.21}

This was part of decor in a vase at my parents home. 50 years of memories were in that home. Putting the house on the market for sale was probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I am glad over the years I have several pictures taken in that home. Jokingly we called my mom "The Wizard (Wiz) and our home was referred to as The Land of Oz".
Looking at this picture brings back fond memories in our home. Even now thinking of that place warms my heart and gives me peace and comfort. {Random Thought 2.23.23}

It's over and done with for the last time - like she said "no looking back or getting back" - actually it's been more than a year. No more tears (even though this last time their was none, but yes no more drama). You had your chance, with conviction I can say their won't be another chance. I will keep it moving.
Enjoying my new beginnings more and more. People, places, things are coming my way. I was reminded this morning had I not made this life changing choice over a year ago, I would not have been able to enjoy the blessings I received this morning and have been receiving lately.

My attempt at an HDR for this shot. A couple problems. 1) It's done from just one exposure 2) The scene is backlit, so the flamingoes are dark. Normally I put hi-res prints up for the HDR photos, but this one has too much noise and just didn't turn out that great.

when you can't see the forest because of the trees, readjust your thinking. Recondition your thought process which may be based only on what you see right before you or even you are thinking about what "others" tell you what you should see and think.

THE SOUND OF PINS FALLING:
Give me a quiet moment away from this delicate disaster at sea.
High tide is beyond being breakers and I am Crashing.
Spreading out over these miniature wars I'm fighting on the inside,
This battlefield is RAGING!!!
We are reaching out in waves we never wanted, Searching for secrets behind the pictures.
I tossed a handful of pins to see what would happen and it was beautiful and amazing.
Silent soft explosions and my world spread out past their straight and narrow.
I collected a handful of sentences to bring back across the borders.
Found inspiration in this ear piercing pain and gave it a name.
I have served in the armies of the FALLEn and waded through worlds to get here.
Standing on the shores of this illusion I can see the ghosts of lighthouses and they are calling us home.
but its a dangerous raod to recover, these pins are everywhere.
We couldnt hold them when they were together and now we cant see them when they are apart.
Your in the canyons living in glass towers and i am spitting stones while no one is looking.
My pages are frozen, stuck in these surroundings and seperated.
I want to look at this world with my eyes closed and listen for the trumpets when their blown.
Once I wanted to believe that there was something more then this all the while looking over my most.
Someday I might take a break from this breakdown, But for now it is my sea.
And one by one I will give you these pins hoping you'll make them into something more beautiful then lighthouse ghosts and veils of night.
See because I am on the edges of a town called BECOMING.
And though I have never been I know that I am welcome there.
I will tell the tale of tossing pins into the ocean with YOu.
I will lay these words in the spaces that fall between us.
ANd I'll Look Up into the canyons, And Know that YOu are there.

Living my life in a slow hell
different girl every night at the hotel
I aint seen the sun shine in 3 damn days
been fuelin up on cocaine and whiskey
wish I had a good girl to miss me
but I wonder if I'll ever change my ways
I put your picture away
sat down and cried today
I cant look at you while I'm lying next to her
I called u last night in the hotel
everyone knows but they wont tell
but there half hided smiles tell me somethin just aint right
I've been waiting on you for a long time
fuelin up on heartaches and she'd whine
I aint heard from you in 3 damn nights
I put your picture away
I wonder where you've been
I cant look at you while I'm lyin next to him
I saw you yesterday with an old friend
it wuz the same old same how have you been
since you've been gone my worlds been dark and gray
you reminded me of brighter days
I hope to be coming home to stay
I wuz head of the church
I wuz off to drink you away
I thought about you for a long time
can't seem to get you off my mind
I cant stand why we're living like this way
I found your picture today
I swear I'll change my ways
I just called to say I want you to come back home
I just called to say I love you
come back home

I'm very pleased that one of my artworks made it into the top four images of 2012. This wire guy on a string is part of an ongoing public art series called Get into the swing of." At a particular location outside, I'll sit down and bend a roll of wire into a figure and then find some available material nearby to create the bench of the swing. Along with some string, I'll tie the guy up and give him a little swing to enjoy the surrounding area. This particular swinging figure was installed at my favorite local park, Winnemac Park in July 2011. Everytime I visit the park I check to see if he's still there. Even in January 2012, he was still swinging with snow covering the landscape. What a trooper!
I especially like how the snow is covering the string so it tells the story that he was there even before the snow laid down. The little branch leaning over serves as a nice compositional element to highlight the figure. The snow also acts as a wonderful backdrop. Normally when I photograph this figure, there's lots of conflicting vegetation in the background that makes it a bit hard to see the figure. Here the snow makes him really sing. The horizon line in the background is also really elegant. Truly a fav of mine!
A truly extra bonus is that I took this photo the day I met my girlfriend. I went out for a run before we had our first date later that night.

Random Thoughts of Mine - 6.4.10
Here we are sharing time and space. You and I. Although others are around us, right here, right now has impact and importance. I see you and you see me. Our connection has been formed. You smiled and said hello and I suddenly forgot about the prior moment that cause me grief and agony. That person, that thing, that so called human life form. I almost didn't hear your words that said, "you look very pretty tonight". Those kind words made me decide to erase those negative thoughts from my mind and instead hold your kind words close to the veins and arteries which pump life into my body. Thank you being a blessing to me today.
For a moment, let us block out the bills that need to be paid, the chores that need to be done, and anything else that divides our attention from focusing on each other. Sitting here with you close to me is all that matters. Being able to touch you and feel your heart beat is all that matters right now. Knowing that having me in your life and being able to get away and share moments like this is all that matters to you. This is what makes my days with you some of the best moments of my life. You are what matters to me because you let me know, I matter to you. {Random Thought 12.14.10}

REFLECTION: This past summer the trees in front of our building provided us with so much shade. I guess I can't get mad at the trees for dropping those nuts on my car and at the end of the day the hood, roof and trunk is covered with leave. I am thankful autumn is here and the tree can rest, restore, revive, and rejuvenate. Trees need to rest sometime too. Today I arrived at work before anyone else parked on this side of the building and I smiled because I was able to enjoy this beautiful vision of awesomeness and I had my camera with me. Natures beauty still continues to unfold even as the trees unwind and transition to another season.They continue to show me love with their leaves falling so gracefully on the ground and displaying such rich gold, orange,brown and yellow colors. Today this was my reminder to give thanks for being able to enjoy this view ~ 11.15.13 Random Thought~

“...I'm innocent still -inside me are stained glass windows that have never been broken- and when I see your light it stains my soul with color ...”
― John Geddes, A Familiar Rain
I attended the Celebration of Life of a man who lived to see 98 years + 102 days of good living. I grew up with 6 of his 7 children. My connection with the family strengthened even more when one the granddaughter’s was in a summer program I was the Director for with the federal government. I always admired the love and closeness of this family. Beautiful family, so full of love. This stained glass window caught my eye as my heart was feeling sorrow for the pain the family was feeling. They were blessed to have had him around in relatively good health for majority of his 98 years. Today, I hugged my parents and little bit tighter. I know each day I have them here is a blessing I don’t take for granted. {Random Thought 2.24.17}

Oh Marilyn, Marilyn. So proudly did she stand for a year in the popular Pioneer Court on Michigan Avenue. Thousands of tourists stood next to her snapping photos. Then one day she got dismantled. Before people were able to look up her skirt, but now they were able to look up inside her!

Life is like a game of chance. At times, it can even be sort of like rolling the dice and seeing what happens next. I have Implemented a new game plan for myself. The stakes are higher because I am the priority. Now, it’s about taking calculated risks, having more control in this game of life. Making sure the odds are more in my favor. Knowing when to say when. So far, so good. I am enjoying being me in 2011. {Random Thoughts 1.24.11}

In honor of Chicago releasing the redesign of their Olympic bid logo, I'm posting another photo taken from the streets of Chicago when they had all the older torch logs featured in ads across the downtown loop. This one is on State Street and features good ol' Marshall Field's flagship store in the background (now Macy's but whatever, it's still Fields in the hearts of Chicagoans). I really like how you can see the Marshall Fields clocks by Pierce Anderson in the background.

About the posters:
Chicago is making a bid to host the Olympics in 2016. Billboards and posters went up in the Loop area of downtown Chicago the weekend before the U.S. Olympic Committee came to visit Chicago to evaluate Chicago's venues and plans for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The posters say, "Stir the Soul."
"Stir the Soul" comes from the famous Daniel Burnham quote, "Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will not die, but long after we are gone be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistence."
