The meaning of Rakhi is "brother and sister bond".
Raksha Bandhan is a popular, traditionally Hindu festival celebrated in India, Nepal and other parts of the Indian subcontinent, and among people around the world influenced by Hindu culture. On this day, sisters of all ages tie a talisman, or amulet, called the rakhi, around the wrists of their brothers, symbolically protecting them, receiving a gift in return, and traditionally investing the brothers with a share of the responsibility of their potential care.
The festival is marked by the tying of a rakhi, or holy thread, which comes in many colors and designs, by the sister on the wrist of her brother. The brother in return offers a gift to his sister. The brother usually presents his sister with an envelope filled with money, though other presents such as saris and clothing can be given. The brother and sister traditionally feed one another sweets.
There was a huge rush on both the UP and DOWN trains due to the festival "Rakshabandhan" just days away. In this heavy rush enters BRC WAP - 4e # 22540 formerly known as "RAJHANS" at Anand with 21 mins late running 22959 Surat (ST) - Jamnagar (JAM) Intercity Superfast Express.

My gorgeous sister. I've come down to Jaipur for Raksha Bandhan and am having a blast with my family. Yajya is here too. Yayyy!
So mom got this border done on her sari and I wanted my sister to wear it before I shot something like this. :)
She was too shy and couldn't stop laughing at first but then we finally got it right. :D Love you ND.

Raksha Bandhan in Sanskrit literally means "the tie or knot of protection".[13] It is an ancient Hindu festival that ritually celebrates the love and duty between brothers and their sisters.[3][14] The sister performs a Rakhi ceremony, then prays to express her love and her wish for the well being of her brother; in return, the brother ritually pledges to protect and take care of his sister under all circumstances. It is one of the several occasions in which family ties are affirmed in India.[2]
The festival is also an occasion to celebrate brother-sister like family ties between cousins or distant family members,[15] sometimes between biologically unrelated men and women.[16] To many, the festival transcends biological family, brings together men and women across religions, diverse ethnic groups and ritually emphasizes harmony and love. It is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Śrāvaṇa, and typically falls in August every year.[2][3][17]

Mehndi is the application of Henna as a temporary form of skin decoration in India. Henna is typically applied during special occasions like weddings and festivals. Nowadays mehndi decorations have became fashionable in the West too.
This one taken by me and the model is my friend who had got mehndi applied on her arms on the occasion of the Indian festival of Rakshabandhan.
The shot was taken in a busy market of Bangalore, where this Rakhi Shop was congested by women from all sides, yet the seller was calmly addressing everyone.
Raksha Bandhan, (the bond of protection) or Rakhi is a festival primarily observed in India and Nepal, which celebrates the relationship between brothers, cousins and sisters. It is also called Rakhi Purnima in most of India.[1][2] It is also celebrated in some parts of Pakistan.[3] The festival is observed by Hindus, Sikhs and some Muslims.[4][5][6] The central ceremony involves the tying of a rakhi (sacred thread) by a sister on her brother's wrist. This symbolizes the sister's love and prayers for her brother's well-being, and the brother's lifelong vow to protect her.[7][8] The festival falls on the full moon day (Shravan Poornima) of the Shravan month of the Hindu lunisolar calendar.[7][9][10][11] It grew in popularity after Rani Karnavati, the widowed queen of Chittor, sent a rakhi to the Mughal emperor Humayun when she required his help.[6]
