Hawa Mahal or "Palace of Winds" or β€œPalace of the Breeze”, is a palace in Jaipur, India. It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, and designed by Lal Chand Ustad in the form of the crown of Krishna, the Hindu god. Its unique five-storey exterior is also akin to the honeycomb of the beehive with its 953 small windows called jharokhas that are decorated with intricate latticework. The original intention of the lattice was to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life in the street below without being seen, since they had to observe strict "purdah" (face cover).

Built of red and pink sandstone, the palace is situated on the main thoroughfare in the heart of Jaipur’s business centre. It forms part of the City Palace, and extends to the Zenana or women's chambers, the chambers of the harem. It is particularly striking when viewed early in the morning, lit with the golden light of sunrise.

My first Cricket match at Lords

The Authors had arrived at the KL Saini stadium 30 mins before, only to be sent away as their hosts, the Rajasthan Royals, were not quite ready for them. They returned to find this extraordinary welcome organised by the Royals and the Jaipur Literature Festival. The ensuing game was the curtain raiser for the Festival, and hopefully will be repeated next year.

Captains Charlie Campbell and Sreesanth went out for the coin-toss on camels, led by a marching band and flanked by men on stilts. The BCCI are looking at making this mandatory for international matches at every level. Charlie, who (for once) won the toss, has made written representations in support of this initiative.

Published in Wisden India (Online).

The very relaxed Joe Craig, Sam Carter and Richard Beard (right to left) have already batted. Surprise tour package and most-improved batsman Alex Preston (far left) is yet to enter the fray. A decent score will leave him with the tourists' best average in India, especially as Joe Craig didn't really get off the mark today. Thankfully the Royals' Captain and demon paceman Sreesanth has chosen to stick to leg-spin today, although their wicket keeper Dishant Yagnik is in dangerous bowling form (finishing up with 4 wicket for 9 runs including a hat-trick).

However, the amount of spin takes him by surprise, and the ball's turn brings it inside his attempted cover drive. Only the top of his pad saves his wicket, diverting the ball over middle and leg. Bowler Raghu Iyer (Royals CEO) and keeper Dishant Yagnik appeal for LBW, though a little half-heartedly. It was denied as a shot had been offered to a ball pitching outside off.

Respectful of Sreesanth's fearsome reputation as a Test fast-bowler for India (average speed 136kmh = 84.5mph), helmets were worn as Authors openers Sam Carter and Joe Craig strode to the wicket. However, it was soon communicated to them that Sreesanth, returning to his bowling origins, was going to stick to leg-spin, and the helmets were removed. Sam Carter was able to wear his lucky Harlequin cap as he faced opening bowler Prince Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar of Udaipur.
