India's defence exports have reached a record-high of ₹23,500 crore, stated Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, indicating a monumental achievement in India’s defence sector. The Minister attributed this success to the increasing participation and innovation from the domestic private sector.

Speaking at the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) Annual Conference in New Delhi, Minister Singh highlighted that India’s total domestic defence production over the last decade has soared to over ₹1.5 lakh crore, with the private sector's contribution exceeding ₹33,000 crore of that total.

Success of Operation Sindoor

The Minister lauded the domestic industry, whom he called "industry warriors," for their contributions to the recent Operation Sindoor. He specifically cited the successful deployment of indigenous systems like the Akash missile system, BrahMos, and the AkashTeer Air Defence Control System, noting that the prowess demonstrated by these platforms has significantly enhanced India's reputation both regionally and globally.

Driving Indigenisation and Policy Reforms

To further bolster this remarkable growth, the Ministry of Defence has actively streamlined procedures, notably by publishing the Positive Indigenisation List for import substitution and simplifying the export clearance process. This strategic push is aimed at creating a level playing field for domestic manufacturers, allowing them to compete globally.

NEW DELHI — The Government of India has confirmed its ambitious goals for the domestic defence sector. The current financial year’s Defence Production Target is set at an impressive Rs 1.75 lakh crore. Furthermore, the government is on track to achieve this monumental figure. This push is part of the "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) initiative. Officials confirmed that this rapid growth aims to establish India as a global defence manufacturing hub. This massive economic drive showcases the nation’s strategic commitment to self-sufficiency.

Defence Production Target: Financial and Manufacturing Goals

The growth trajectory in the defence sector is steep and deliberate. In the previous fiscal year (FY 2024-25), India recorded its highest-ever defence production value at Rs 1.54 lakh crore. The government is confidently targeting Rs 1.75 lakh crore for the current financial year. Looking ahead, the longer-term goal is even more ambitious: boosting defence production to Rs 3 lakh crore by 2029.

This financial growth is paralleled by increased indigenisation. Crucially, approximately 65% of all defence equipment is now manufactured within the country. This represents a monumental shift from a previous reliance on imports for 65 per cent–70 per cent of equipment. This strategic change proves the robust technological upliftment and enhanced capacity of India's defence ecosystem.

New Delhi. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today announced that India successfully reached an unprecedented defence production valuation of approximately ₹1.51 Lakh Crore during the Financial Year 2024–25. The Minister highlighted the significant role of the Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), which alone contributed a decisive 71.6 per cent of this massive total, proving their position as key drivers of the nation’s self-reliance in the security sector.

Strong Growth and Global Confidence

The Raksha Mantri made these remarks after inaugurating the new DPSU Bhavan, a state-of-the-art central facility strategically located at the World Trade Centre in New Delhi. He noted that defence exports also demonstrated robust performance, touching ₹6,695 crore and clearly signifying increasing global confidence in India’s indigenous military systems. The Minister affirmed that "Made in India" defence products currently enjoy enhanced global respect. He strongly urged the DPSUs to amplify their focus on research and development (R&D), indigenisation, and exports to establish India as a major global defence manufacturing hub. The Minister further stated that the successful execution of operations, such as Operation Sindoor, powerfully demonstrated the reliability and core capability of India’s indigenous defence platforms.

All necessary steps would be taken to ensure that timelines for production of equipment as per the Negative Import List are met, which will include a co-ordinated mechanism for hand holding of the industry by the Defence Services.
