Lahore Canal (Urdu/Punjabi: لاﻫﻮر ﻧﻬﺮ) is a branch of the Bambawali-Ravi-Bedian Canal (a 37 mile long waterway built by the Mughals and upgraded by the British in 1861) that runs through the city of Lahore, Pakistan and is an important part of the city's cultural heritage.
The canal, aside from its importance in irrigation purposes, forms the centre of a unique linear park that serves as one of the longest public green belts and popular destination spots for people wanting to relieve themselves during the summer months in the provincial metropolis.
The average depth of the Canal is 5 feet, and it is bounded by roads on either side, and hence, those roads are called 'Canal Bank Road'.
On local and national festivals, the canal is illuminated with lights and decor.
Construction
The Bambawali Ravi-Bedian (BRB) Canal at the east of the city of Lahore was already constructed in Mughal Era of the Indian Subcontinent, however, during the British Raj, the British sliced the Bambawali Ravi-Bedian (BRB) Canal and extended it on the west side (city of Lahore) till the town of Raiwind, located in south of Lahore.
The idea to extend the canal may have possibly emerged because an irrigation system was felt necessary after a disastrous famine hit the Subcontinent in 1837-38 in which nearly ten million (one crore) rupees was spent on relief works, resulting in considerable loss of revenue to the British East India Company.
The origin and route of the canal.
Route
It starts from BRB canal, few yards away from the Khaira Village, dividing the old neighborhoods of Lahore (on the west-side of the Canal) from the trendy areas of the privileged rich (on the east side of the Canal). After crossing the Thokar Niaz Baig it turns left and moves parallel to the Raiwind road. Flowing between the main highways, the canal also serves as the chief artery of the city.
Culture and Arts

During summers, its very sight is a relief to the Lahoris. In those hot, simmering days hundreds of people come to swim. They eat watermelons and generally have good time in the canal. Young boys make the crowd but in the evenings one sees a good number of families sitting on the banks, the women with their feet in the water.
On local, national and religious festivals, such as Jashn-e-Bahara (Welcoming Spring), Basant, Eid, Pakistan's Independence Day and Pakistan Day the canal is illuminated with lights and different types of decor are laid out into the water - relevant to the festival. Many companies (like Omore) also use the canal as a great way to promote their brand.

Unhealthy water
The canal water is said to be toxic and unhygienic. The samples of the canal water were examined at the Environment Department’s specialised laboratory in Lahore and showed “excessive limits of sulfide, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, chlorine and sulphate; a disturbed pH balance and several other imbalances” because of the chemicals being thrown into the canal. The report found that all of the pollutants were in excess of the limit set by national environment quality standards. Regrettably, lower-class citizens swim in that water and some even drink from it, oblivious to the fact that this polluted water can cause diseases like hepatitis and various skin diseases.

Desiltation
In early 2008, water was stopped from flowing into the canal to carry out de-silting and cleaning up any mess from the canal-bed. Cranes were seen digging out all the mud and filling truck-loads on the canal banks.
After the process has been completed and the canal bed looks beautifully uniform, the irrigation officials announced to allow water in from February 10, 2008; all to the joy and relief of many Lahoris and the villagers alike.
Government Ignorance
Lahore Bachao Tehreek’s (Save Lahore Movement) case against the widening of the Lahore Canal was still pending before the Supreme Court. Up till now, no steps had been taken to purify the waters of the canal, seeing that political and public interests were being mixed and the country’s rulers were not bothered about the issue at all. “The water in the canal is made to look clean and purified when VIPs have to go along the canal route, after which there is a return to the dismal conditions,” Dr Ijaz (Lahore Conservation Society Information Secretary) said, adding that the government was not sincerely concerned about the welfare of its people and was exposing them to the harmful water of the canal.

No pesticides, fungicides, insecticides have been used in the area and all the strict standards of the Soil Association have been adhered to. To avoid the use of harmful pesticide and insecticides EM Technology is used.
This highly successful farm has consistently won first prize in Horticultural Exhibitions. Most of our fruit produce is of export quality and is being exported to the Middle East and Europe.

Today, I had the chance to spend an hour interviewing ex Prime Minister and leader of the Pakistani Muslim League (PML-N), Nawaz Sharif, in his home in Raiwind, in the outskirts of Lahore. M. Sharif was ousted by current president Musharaf in a coup in 1999, and lived in exile in Saudi Arabia until Nov. 2007, when he returned to his stronghold of Punjab. After the assassination of PPP leader Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif stands out as the main opposition leader for the upcoming elections. As we were returning to Lahore, we learnt a suicide attack near the High Court had killed 23 people :-(

The Bishwa Ijtema, (Bangla: বিশ্ব এজতেমা) or (World Congregation or Global Congregation or Meeting) is an annual Tablighi Jamaat Islamic movement congregation held at Tongi, Bangladesh by the river Turag. The event focuses on prayers and meditation and does not allow political discussion. The local police estimated the number of attendees of 2007 ijtema to be 3 million.
The first meeting was reportedly held in 1946 [3] (although various sources indicate other dates for this) and continues to be organized by the Bangladesh Tablighi Jamaat. It lasts three days and is attended by over two million Muslims, making it the second largest congregation after the Hajj to Mecca but Hajj is farz(must) on the other hand Ijtema is not Farz. The program concludes with the Akheri Munajat, or final prayer. The tradition of Ijtema was initiated by an Indian savant named Maulana Ilyas and began as a small group of religious-minded individuals gathering at a local mosque. For forty-one years Tongi has been the chosen location, although similar programs are held on a lesser scale in other countries. The Ijtema is non-political, and therefore perhaps it draws people of all persuasion. Prayer is held for the spiritual adulation, exaltation and welfare of the Muslims community. This immensely popular program gives the people of Bangladesh an opportunity to interact with Muslims from other countries and is commonly attended by prominent political figures.
The congregation takes place at an area comprising 160 acres (0.65 km2) of land (0.25 square mile). Devotees from approximately 80 countries, including the host country, Bangladesh, attend the three-day Ijtema seeking divine blessings from Allah. In recent years, over seven thousands foreign delegates attend the congregatation each year. Special rates are provided by Bangladesh Biman's world wonder fund.
Despite the large number of devotees living within a confined space, generally there is very few problems of sanitation, cooking, and internal movements. It is believed to be possible because of the minimalist approach adopted by the devotees. Devotees have reduced their own requirements and developed a respect for others' requirements.
Muhammad Ilyas revived the Tabligh movement in 1927 at Saharanpur of Uttar Pradesh, India and at the same time organized regional congregation or Ijtema. In course of time, Ijtema movement spread throughout the subcontinent and also influenced other regions. After the partition of Bengal in 1947, three Ijtema centres developed in three parts of the subcontinent - India, West Pakistan and East Pakistan. Biswa Ijtema at Tongi is the annual Tabligh congregation of the current Bangladesh (East Pakistan before 1971). In addition to Tongi, Ijtemas are now held in Raiwind, Pakistan and Bhopal, India. In 2008, the event had to be cut short to only one day due to rain and cold weather which left three attendees dead.
