Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain 20221125
The amazing Andean region of Cusco not only has impressive Inca constructions, but also geological wonders that captivate by its great showiness. Although the most visited is the rainbow mountain of Vinicunca, there is another dream place whose scenic beauty deserves all the attention: the Palccoyo cordillera.
Located south of the Imperial City, this jewel of the Peruvian Andes is made up of three colorful mountains accompanied by a spectacular view of the mountain Ausangate.
Once in Palccoyo, you witness the majesty of the place and the singularity of the landscape. It is a geological formation produced by the accumulation of minerals and water, as well as by the local winds and the humidity. This combination of elements generated, in the past, the oxidation of the surface, the same one that acquired that special diversity of tones. In the surroundings of the mountains you can also find a viewpoint located in the middle of a forest of stones up to ten meters high that give the appearance of a geological labyrinth.
Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain 20221125
The coloration of Palcoyo Mountain Peru responds to a vast amount of minerals on that particular mountain range. Minerals such as iron or sulfur among many others dye the rolling hillsides. The red coloring is due to an iron oxide coating and cementation, also known as hematite, between the sandstone grains. This same process takes place when a construction nail is exposed to the rain for a while and forms a red layer of rust around the outside.
However, there is a set of colors besides only red, the metallic yellow for example, which contains sulfur and iron sulfide. Meanwhile, green tones come from chlorite or iron silicate clays and whitish tones has to do with quarzite sandstone. Know the sandstones suffered alteration due to the weather conditions for millennia, and it still does suffer at the present day.

Palcoyo Forest Stones 20221125
The Forest of stones Palcoyo is a natural attraction that is part of the circuit of the mountain of colors of Palcoyo, a small forest of natural formation of big rocks which is to a unique height to 5000 m.a.s.l. This forest has a style of having been carved in ancient times with a mastery that attracts many tourists and travelers in a very privileged area where you can see the great chain of mountains that form the Andean mountain range, and the natural beauty of the mountain of colors that provide a unique setting worthy of being visited and ideal for people who love nature and mysticism.
This forest of stones emerged millions of years ago as a result of deglaciation and volcanic eruptions, which with the passage of time and erosion formed these whimsical shapes in the upper part of the mountain, and shows a unique charm thanks to its scenic beauty.
Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain 20221125
There are different reasons why the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain is striped with colors ranging from turquoise to lavender to maroon and gold. However, they are largely due to weathering and mineralogy.
The subduction of the Nazca plate underneath the South American plate initiated mountain building and uplift of the Andes mountain range. This produced significant volcanism and the introduction of rare and varied mineralogy to the Andes Mountains. Different layers of sediment rocks, like sandstone, halite, gravel, clay and other minerals were compacted one above the other to form different layers.
As time passes, movement and collision of tectonic plates gave rise to new mountains and also new colors. This is because sediments will change of color when exposed to environmental conditions, like snow, wind and water. For example, red coloration of sedimentary layers often indicates iron oxide rust as a trace mineral. In addition, the bright yellow coloration could be due to iron sulphide as trace minerals within the pore cement.

The Vinicunca is the famous 'Rainbow Mountain' that has quickly become a compulsory stop for visitors to the Cusco area, with thousands of tourists traversing its colourful terrain every day for about four hours on high altitude slopes.
However, it is not the only one. There is in fact another one, still little known and very similar to it: Palcoyo, which has recently become the most popular alternative. It attracts attention not only because of its similarity to Vinicunca, but also because it offers an incredible landscape of unique colors, derived from mineral deposits and their shades: the ocre of sulfur, the red of iron, the blue of cobalt. You can also appreciate a rock forest with huge rocky peaks that look like a geological maze.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a natural counterpoint to the Las Vegas Strip, 15 miles to the east. From this vantage point, near the Calico Hills, one has a spectacular view of the Rainbow Mountains, from left to right: Mount Wilson, Rainbow Mountain, Mescalito Peak, Bridge Mountain. At elevations in the 7,000 ft range, these are impressive peaks, but the red and buff sandstone cliffs really draw visual attention. A winter rain storm passing overhead adds to the drama of the image, here. Taken 2 December 2012.

Palcoyo Valley (Eucalyptus Trees) 20221125
The Eucalyptus (E. globula), originally from Australia, has become an important part of the ecosystem of the southern Peruvian Andes, thanks mainly to a land reform programma and the tree's suitability to grow successfully in this difficult habitat.
Around 1970, the Peruvian government handed over a large amount of land to campesinos (former landless peasants). To make this land reform work, the government planted hundreds of thousands of eucalyptus trees in the almost treeless region to give the peasants a chance to stay on the land.
Both the reform and the eucalyptus forestation of long bare slopes are considered a success almost half a century later.

This image was taken in the Palcoyo Valley, at an altitude of 3,570 meters above sea level.
At a parking area pullout to the Middle Oak Creek Trailhead with a view looking to the northwest to across the Mojave Desert landscape leading up to the sandstone formations and peaks. My thought on composing this image was to take advantage of some higher ground that I was located on and capture a sweeping view, looking down and then across to those peaks and ridges. I felt that bringing them a little higher into the image would bring out a sense of grandeur and minimize any flattening from the wider angle view. Given I was looking almost in the direction of the sun, I wanted to later be able to pull out some of the details present in the colored layers of rock on the mountainsides. I used the ClearView Plus tool in DxO PhotoLab 6 to help with that.
The story behind going to this location on a trip to Joshua Tree and Death Valley National Parks was a Ripley’s Believe It or Not comic that mentioned this location. I then went on Flickr and found quite a few amazing images and decided that I had to visit this place, at least for a short time, before heading back to Las Vegas for my flight to Austin. This is definitely a place to spend more time hiking and exploring on a future trip!

While at the Red Rock Canyon Overlook with a view looking to the northwest to the sandstone peaks and mountains present in this conservation area. While I did want a wider angle, panoramic feel with the image captured, I had to watch the angle I was looking because of light artifacts across the lens. And there was quite a bit of glare present that afternoon.
I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 6 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image. I found the ClearView Plus tool also helped to address some of the glare.
While taking in view to the northwest and across a mountain desert landscape at a roadside pullout in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. What I wanted to capture with this image was look across the landscape to my front, filled with a variety of different plant-life, and have that lead up to the sandstone peaks and rock formations off in the distance. I wanted to have a more or less leveled-on view with the horizon. The blue skies and clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.
I chose to work with HDR Efex Pro 2 (which I’d recently purchased with a DxO upgrade) to better bring that complete setting in the image. I then exported a TIFF image to DxO PhotoLab 5 where I did some final adjustments with contrast, saturation and brightness for the final image.

Maunga Kākaramea, or Rainbow Mountain, is a geothermal mound about 25km south of Rotorua. Its peak, Tui-o-Rua, is a round plateau at 768m and is occupied by a fire lookout tower.
At 5020mrt: the crazy colour pallet of the "Rainbow Mountains" or Corderilla de los Arcoiris, wich is visited (reachable) by the public for only a couple of years. Before, only experienced climbers passed this place to reach the difficult peak of Ausangate. For this reason, the culture and nature remains untouched and authentic here, at least untill now...
I Shot this just before sundown: clouded and too little time to make to the next (purple) valley wich was a bit of a dissapointment for me. And as darkness came in quick, we had to go down soon after waiting 3,5 hours at the base for the rain and the hail to stop to even get on top at all in the first place. But well worth to see this remarkable place totally alone and to even get an opportunity to photograph it at all. Despite the weather conditions, this is what I made of it..
NB: Not a trip I would recommend for easy hikers (like me) and non-fit people. Total time from Cusco: 14 hours go and back.
Near Ausengate, Peru.
.. a 13 vertical clicks panorama.
And yep... those hills are really very purple.. :-)
It's simple, really, the making of a rainbow -- just some sunlight and some water. Simple. But easy...not in the least. It's reflection, refraction, dispersion -- phenomenal meteorological science; Mother Nature's fierce magic! It requires great skill, effort, practice, patience. Simple, but not easy. And, oh, how beautifully she shines when all of that energy synchronizes! :)
Thank you, Mother Nature, for showing off a fantastically dreamy rainbow over the Rainbow Mountains! Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, NV
