One of the cooler things I've ever done---visit Roslyn Washington back when Northern Exposure was being filmed there. I got to stand in Joel's doctor's office waiting room, and check out Chris In The Morning's radio studio set. These were the real deal, not a tourist re-creation.Everyone in town was very nice.

In 1980 (when my study of the BBC really took off) there were 3 BBC 'Network Production Centres' in England. With the demolition of Pebble Mil, Birmingham & the move to Salford from New Broadcasting House, Manchester - Broadcasting House in Whiteladies Road, Bristol is the only one of the 3 still standing.

Home to the world-renowned BBC Natural History Unit, as well as a long line of antiques-based programmes on radio & tv (plus a great deal more since 1934).

Incidentally it's 25 years since I first walked through these doors.

Just for those who are curious about how radio talk shows are produced, here's a CBC radio producer's office. Otherwise, here's a photo from a recent tour of the Vancouver CBC TV& Radio Studios. Flickr album link is flic.kr/s/aHsmv29Pnn . Please enjoy this image responsibly, thanks!

Must say as an American, I doubt in 12/2018 we'll see a major US Television Studio do the same anytime soon. Sadly we don't appreciate the press as much as Canada does and I'll leave it at that. At least I had my curiosity satisfied of what goes on in a TV Studio... and hopefully made some of the on-air folk feel genuinely appreciated for the hard & honourable work they do.

Keith Burnside is a newsreading legend at BBC Radio Ulster. Or so he told me a couple of weeks ago when I shot this! A framed version of this now sits at his Mum's, so she can see him when she's listening to him read the news. Isn't that lovely? This studio sits in the newsroom at Broadcasting House, Belfast. The street outside is Linenhall St West. PC screen 1 shows ENPS, a production system for broadcast journalists, PC screen 2 shows Dalet, a French mainframe audio editing and play out system. The paper cup is pretty reliable.

Viewers in Britain got a bit of a Reslo-tinged treat this Sunday when an episode of ITV's "The Royal", a retro hospital drama set in the swinging 1960s, featured an offshore pirate radio station complete with disc jockey Lenny Lomax (played by Guy Burnet) and of course a Reslo RB Ribbon Microphone.

The episode was broadcast on Sunday 10th July 2011, featured a trip out for Lizzie (played by Michelle Hardwick), Carol (played by Diana May) and Faye (played by Lauren Drummond) to a fictional pirate radio station ship, Radio Neptune, clearly inspired by the original pirate radio ship Radio Caroline. The filming took place on the S.S. Shieldhall which is moored in Southampton. After succumbing to the "groovy" DJ's charm, events turn out differently to what they had expected!

If you are in the UK you can watch this episode for the next 27 days on ITV's website using their ITV Player. Viewers outside the UK may encounter copyright problems, but give it a try anyway.
