Commemoration for Nguyễn Ngọc Châu and Đỗ Anh Lân.
On August 22. 1980, members of the neo-nazi terror organisation „Deutsche Aktionsgruppe“ attacked a refugee home at Halskestraße in Hamburg/Billbrook. Nguyễn Ngọc Châu und Đỗ Anh Lân died in this arson attack. This attack marked the first documented racist murder in post war germany. Many were to follow: At least 250 people had been killed by racists up today. The last terrible crime was the terror attack in Hanau early this year. 40 years after, we will commemorate Nguyễn Ngọc Châu and Đỗ Anh Lân, with a rally in front of the former refugee home.
Like all the years before we demand a dignified remembrance and will report on the latest development towards our demands. The commemoration will end with a minute of silence and a buddhist prayer. Flowers appreciated.

Es waren die ersten dokumentierten rassistischen Morde in der BRD. Weitere folgten seitdem: Mindestens 250 Menschen wurden bis heute von Rassist_innen ermordet.
Die letzte erschreckende Tat ist der Anschlag von Hanau im Frühjahr dieses Jahres.
Anlässlich des 40. Jahrestages des Brandanschlages von 1980 werden wir den beiden Ermordeten mit einer Kundgebung vor der damaligen Geflüchtetenunterkunft gedenken.
Wie auch in den vergangenen Jahren wollen wir unseren Forderungen nach einem würdigen Gedenken an Đỗ Anh Lân und Nguyễn Ngọc Châu Nachdruck verleihen und Euch von aktuellen Entwicklungen und den ersten Erfolgen unserer Bemühungen berichten. Sometimes, rarely, people manage to slip aggressively racist names past the filters on XBox Live. These guys were quite skilled at Halo 2 - tacticalally coordinated together. It would have been nice to beat them! But we lost.
I couldn't believe it either! This is a genuine toothpaste product you can buy, here in Hong Kong.
I was queuing up to buy something today, in Watsons (a chain of drugstores in Hong Kong, equivalent to Boots in UK), when I saw this product. I had to double check that my eyes were not deceiving me!
I am astounded and appalled that a product with the name 'Chinky' could ever make it to market, in above all places Hong Kong.
Can you imagine the furore that would ensue, if they had launched a product in the UK (and probably any other western country), using a name with such racist connotations?!
Ok, so this word may not have a great deal of meaning to local HK Chinese, I mean why would it? 8 million Chinese people are hardly going to resort to calling one another Chinky. But to Chinese who were born and raised abroad, this word means plenty!
My point is this. It may not be offensive to the majority of people here, as they simply do not understand the meaning of word, but, it's sending out the wrong message to people who do understand.
I'm not sure which governing body looks after 'racist named products', but I shall find out and write to them.

Ever since I first laid eyes on the packets of Conguitos (special vintage editions shown here) in Spain, I raised my eyebrows... and the packet design was far more racist in my eyes then - the brown characters had big red lips a spear! Holy smokes!

These pictures clearly portray and image of Africa and Africans, which is not suitable for the present day. This is why a few years back, María Frías, a university professor at the University of A Coruña, who is a specialist in Afroamerican literature, called for the logo to be changed given the “racist message it conveys, insulting the thousands of African migrants living in Spain (…) and which serves only to promote and perpetuate the negative estereoptypes associated with African people”. At the time of these criticisms, in 2003, the creator of the image said that if he was to draw it nowadays, it would obviously be different, and at the time Conguitos were first produced – in the early 1960s, the Congo had just become independent and was therefore fashionable, so they went for a more “exotic” look. I wasn’t aware of this controversy – I was not in Spain at the time – and I don’t know if these criticisms voiced by Professor Frías may have made the manufacturer change the logo – given that the current one does not have some of the features which made it so clearly stereotypical and racist (e.g. the thick red lips), and make it a more abstract (weird?) figure.
In any case I just thought it would be interesting to share these thoughts for I think reveal something about Spanish attitude to Africa and Africans. What I found most interesting about all this, is that most people in Spain do not even stop for a second to think about the message Conguitos gives. It is just there, it has always been, and there is nothing wrong with that. It is only when someone tries to tell to people from other places (generally from countries more concerned with political correction, and where issues of racism have been there for longer) that one realises how awkward, out of date, and even plain racist these image are (this is what happen to my girlfriend when she tried to tell her British friends that these sweets were still on sale, not some Golliwog-like curiosity). Or, even more poignantly – as a friend told me, he experienced with two black friends came to visit him – when two black people enter a shop and ask for a packet of Conguitos. It is then,and only then, that the shop-keeper becomes aware of how inadequate the image on the packet is!
So, there you have it. In the early Nineties we were contracted to do some work in Northern Spain. The clients workers were a bit taken aback, they didn't want what we were providing.
"We are working hard, very hard here. We are working like the blacks!" they stated. Like the text earlier, I don't think it was racist, simply a statement.

Mr. Marek. I meet him in the little village on the road to Góra Kalwaria (just outside Warsaw) He considers himself racist - that is not the first case I come across - the level of absurd is high considering that Poland was and is far from being cosmopolitan and people of other races were practically absent in communist Poland. Anyway according to his store two black guys were molesting his girlfriend (presently his wife) so he took the knife out of his pocket and killed one of them. He did 10 years sentence from 1978 until 1988 between Rakowiecka, Potulice and Fordon facilities.

Mr. Marek. I meet him in the little village on the road to Góra Kalwaria (just outside Warsaw) He considers himself racist - that is not the first case I come across - the level of absurd is high considering that Poland was and is far from being cosmopolitan and people of other races were practically absent in communist Poland. Anyway according to his store two black guys were molesting his girlfriend (presently his wife) so he took the knife out of his pocket and killed one of them. He did 10 years sentence from 1978 until 1988 between Rakowiecka, Potulice and Fordon facilities.

Ever since I first laid eyes on the packets of Conguitos in Spain, I raised my eyebrows... and the packet design was far more racist in my eyes then - the brown characters had big red lips a spear! Holy smokes!
The contents themselves are actually quite tasty. Peanuts covered in chocolate. Recommended.

These pictures clearly portray and image of Africa and Africans, which is not suitable for the present day. This is why a few years back, María Frías, a university professor at the University of A Coruña, who is a specialist in Afroamerican literature, called for the logo to be changed given the “racist message it conveys, insulting the thousands of African migrants living in Spain (…) and which serves only to promote and perpetuate the negative estereoptypes associated with African people”. At the time of these criticisms, in 2003, the creator of the image said that if he was to draw it nowadays, it would obviously be different, and at the time Conguitos were first produced – in the early 1960s, the Congo had just become independent and was therefore fashionable, so they went for a more “exotic” look. I wasn’t aware of this controversy – I was not in Spain at the time – and I don’t know if these criticisms voiced by Professor Frías may have made the manufacturer change the logo – given that the current one does not have some of the features which made it so clearly stereotypical and racist (e.g. the thick red lips), and make it a more abstract (weird?) figure.
In any case I just thought it would be interesting to share these thoughts for I think reveal something about Spanish attitude to Africa and Africans. What I found most interesting about all this, is that most people in Spain do not even stop for a second to think about the message Conguitos gives. It is just there, it has always been, and there is nothing wrong with that. It is only when someone tries to tell to people from other places (generally from countries more concerned with political correction, and where issues of racism have been there for longer) that one realises how awkward, out of date, and even plain racist these image are (this is what happen to my girlfriend when she tried to tell her British friends that these sweets were still on sale, not some Golliwog-like curiosity). Or, even more poignantly – as a friend told me, he experienced with two black friends came to visit him – when two black people enter a shop and ask for a packet of Conguitos. It is then,and only then, that the shop-keeper becomes aware of how inadequate the image on the packet is!
So, there you have it. In the early Nineties we were contracted to do some work in Northern Spain. The clients workers were a bit taken aback, they didn't want what we were providing. "We are working hard, very hard here. We are working like the blacks!" they stated. Like the text earlier, I don't think it was racist, simply a statement.
