A WARBLER of open countryside, they love to perch conspicuously, allowing good views, but this one did not read the script, and gave me a runaround for an hour or more, peeking up briefly to tease me. My only saving grace was there was a bench to sit on, and finally, it took pity on me and perched beautifully. Seen on Skomer Island.

This Four-toed Hedgehog gave me the runaround for an hour after dark across the gardens of a hotel in Senegal. It was spotted by staff and guests in half a dozen places, but by the time I was alerted it had scuttled off at high speed through flowerbeds and hedges before hiding beneath a vehicle in the car park.
This hedgehog is so different from the species seen in Britain. It can vary greatly in colouration, but typical wild specimens have brown or grey spines with white or cream coloured tips. The fur on the body is speckled grey, with brown around the muzzle, and white face, legs, and underparts.
This species is found throughout much of central and eastern Africa. Populations tend to be scattered between suitable savannah or cropland habitats, avoiding forested areas. The species common name is derived from the number of toes found on its hind feet.

" Hiding out
Behind your darkest doubts
Don't give me the runaround
I've been on your side
You steal away
Gone before I say
I needed you to stay
Now I'm all alone
Hello hello
Can you hear me now?
Hello hello
Inside the looking glass
I see you looking back
Hollow as an empty track
But you're sinking like a stone
Hello hello
Can you hear me now?...

I want what I wanted
Oh, what a fool believes
I got 'er in my sight, but
Just out of reach, oh-oh
Here we go around, (round, round, round)
Run-run-runaround, yeah! (round, round, round, round)
Here we go around, (round, round, round)
She's given me the runaround, oh, ow! (round, round, round, round)
Since taking over the reins of Album of the month, old Lord Fellsider has let his farm fall to pieces as he flicks through his extensive collection of Jazz albums.
..ahhh, Joey..what are you doing?
So Joey has a girlfriend. At least he thinks he does as she has been ignoring all his moves toward her. So after another session of runaround, he picked up a bunch of grasses, arranged them in his mouth as seen on this photo and took off.
I guess he is going to try to loose weight in isolation.
From this former railroad bed, which was converted into the Prescott-Russell Recreational Trail in the sixties, we can access a number of side trails that take us into deeper bush in the Ottawa south area, or between the many cultivated fields for a little open runaround, or connect to other trails on the system, or finally lead us into the Mer Bleue Bog area described in the previous photo.
I like everywhere we go because it's all so different, but here I get to play serious ball with Dad because it's safe to go all out, which is the only way for me to chase my ball!

After setting off a single gondola for the Conemaugh & Black Lick, L100 runs through the overgrown yard tracks to couple onto the south end of its consist. This maneuver allows another front-uncoupled shot of the 2756.

IMRR SD18 61 and TZPR GP10 3000 have taken over the empty coal train from the IAIS. Once the coal train clears, IAIS 708 will runaround their covered hoppers and return north to Bureau.

A butterfly of the Pieridae family. It is found in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and southern and eastern South Africa. The wingspan is 50–60 mm (2.0–2.4 in) for males and 52–65 mm (2.0–2.6 in) for females. This visitor to our garden gave me quite the runaround before I managed to get this shot. :-)
The BRC local descends down from the runaround at 22nd Street to switch Charter Steel in North Lawndale. Power is one of the Belt's only two rebuilt MP15ACs.
UP YPR60B departs Grand Avenue after making its pickup at the Chicago Tribune's Freedom Center on the left. Half a century ago, this was the site of the C&NW's coach yard for the Wisconsin Division commuter routes. Now it's just a spur, a runaround track, and two out-of-service yard leads.
With runaround complete, the L100 prepares to couple onto its train. The steeple for St. Joseph's German Catholic Church dominates the background.
After snowing in absolute blinding fashion for a few hours, we were optimistic for a scene that was engulfed with snowflakes swirled by the wind. What we wanted and what we got were two different things, as a hole in the snow pattern opened overhead a few minutes before HESR 765 finished their runaround and departed Owosso to head back to Durand. Passing the GTW era depot that is still used by the local Elks Lodge, an enthusiastic conductor signals his approval of our lights as they pass by.
Over 46 years ago, P&W M420r 2004 is assigned to Worcester local XW-1 arriving at Woonsocket yard. The train is pulling in on the runaround, looks like three empties out of Tupperware in Blackstone and an LPG empty out of Home Gas in Uxbridge. This job will work the 'Slatersviile secondary' before returning to Worcester, MA
The crew on todays train were all day one employees when the P&W resumed operations in 1973. On the throttle is Mark McKeon, on the front pilot is Jerry De Mello and on the ground ready to make a cut, is Dave Fitzgerald.

A GP9 powered Helena Local arrives in Townsend, MT, to complete a runaround for the return trip to Helena.
A clean 60026 crawls across Madeley Chord Junction with a loaded MGR from Silverdale Colliery for Ratcliffe power station.
The train has just crossed over the west coast mainline. The locomotive will shortly uncouple and runaround and descend the chord to Madeley junction itself. The west coast mainline is just visible here above the train, with another train being visible on the WCML just left of the locomotive.
In my pop picks from 1998, special mention must go out to local lad Robbie Williams for his October 1998 release. Growing up 6 miles from Madeley, his 'I've been expecting you' album entered the chart at number 1 and spawned multiple platinum singles.
Looks like a lot people had snow in their area this week. We only got a few inches but it was enough to get the dogs charged up for some good runarounds. Stay warm everyone.
Back in 2009, the Mason City local LMC-15 had just pulled off the Owatonna Sub and is now on the Mason City Sub as they pull by the depot. Due to no wye at Mason City this train will have to be run around before it heads east towards Marquette as a FMCKC. Power for the Jordan Ditcher sits on # 2 track waiting for the switch engine get the plow off the turntable so the can head west towards Spencer with it. The CP must off been fighting with the IANR, cause normally these trains would go down the IANR to Nora Springs to bypass this runaround move.
St. Maries River Railroad EMD SW1200 No. 501 is departing the St. Maries, Idaho, with three empty centerbeam flatcars destined for Stimson Lumber at Milltown. The mill is located directly on the old Milwaukee Road, with cars spotted directly on the main line with no runaround trackage. So the train backs out of town…through the interesting maze of trackage that is St. Maries yard.
chai the smooth saluki. this was taken 2 days after chai's 9th birthday. he got a bowl of ice cream and 4 chocolate chips.
it's been chilly here, foggy and humid. chai prefers warm. so....after he takes a runaround in the field, he comes in to his chair and curls up. [secretly hoping for a fire in the wood stove, I think.]

Delaware Lackawanna PO-74 runs east on the Pocono Main through the scenic Delaware Water Gap on its way to runaround at Slateford Junction. While the large NS interchange trains of PT-97/98 are a thing of the past, the DL still runs as far as Slateford in serving RockTenn near East Stroudsburg.
CN L536 snakes through Bridgeport behind a pair of IC SD70s on New Year's Day as it rushes to make a window at 16th Street. In the distance is Bridgeport interlocking and the Bubbly Creek bridge where the IC and ATSF split from the Alton. On the right is all that remains of the Alton Yard at Bridgeport, a siding and a short runaround. To the left is the neighborhood of Bridgeport, a historically Irish-American stronghold that spawned five of Chicago's mayors including both of the Daleys.
An ex-GO F59PH leads #2225 out of Chicago past the former site of Noble Street interlocking and the runaround track for the now-demolished ADM mill which is now becoming severely overgrown.
After dropping all the passengers at the station in Cresco, the Steamtown excursion eases downgrade alongside Bestway Lumber to begin a series of back and forth moves to get the engines on the western end of the train as there is no runaround track at this location. Cresco at one time was a huge stop on the Lackawanna for the Phoebe Snow and other passenger trains as witnessed by the size of the platform here. The station itself is around the curve to the left 100 yards or so, and the platform extended down to around the area of this shot. Pretty impressive for a small station in the middle of nowhere on the mountain, but this area was once the home to some fancy resorts for the upper class of the time.
At Tilcons Reeds Gap runaround in Wallingford, Providence & Worcester train NH-1 heads out of town, as the conductor of CT-1 opens the anglecock for the trip back to Middletown.
This is a telephoto shot of the city of Stirling, showing the prominent position of the castle and Ben Vorlich in the background.
The old New Haven Fitchburg Branch doesn't reach its namesake town any longer instead ending here about 4.6 miles short at the Mechanic Street crossing at MP QBU 4.6 where just enough track is maintained and the crossing signals manually operated so that two units can clear the north end of the runaround.
It's been decades since a train has traveled any further north than this point and the rails are long gone, but amazingly just around the corner maybe 100 ft behind me is the circa 1878 Boston, Clinton and Fitchburg Railroad station that saw it's last New Haven passenger train call in 1928.

I can already envision the comment from GSP, but I will post this anyway. I was at a slide get-together and someone mentioned that Delaware & Hudson train NE87 had gone to Potomac Yard with two Maine Central units for power. They would return on NE84. This was big news, and the next day, most of the railfans in the Allentown area were gathered at the South Fourth Street overpass in Emmaus to record the GP38/U25B arriving in the Lehigh Valley. After a fairly quick runaround/recrew in Allentown, the train was headed west on the Lehigh & Susquehanna line.
Arrival in Lehighton revealed a southbound D&H train and a set of helpers that has assisted the southbound, and was poised to help NE84 over Penobscot Mountain. The helper set consisted of two D&H GP39-2’s and, you guessed it, another MEC GP38. Here the train has combined with the helpers and is rolling under the former CNJ bridge at Lehighton. The Guilford era had arrived.
Today being Fathers Day, I thought a couple of photos from his favorite railroad in his home town. On many occasions he would make the two mile drive from our home over to the P&W's mainline take one photo and head back home.
This was a fairly normal occurrence, where Worcester local XW-1 is headed north from Valley Falls returning to Worcester. They would often meet the concrete tie extra here in Woonsocket, RI.
P&W U18B 1801 along with M420 2001 are assigned to XW-1 and M420 2004 is on the tie extra holding on the runaround .
Being just seven months since Dad passed away, it seems fitting to pay tribute to him.
Happy Fathers Day!

The grade is accentuated here just uphill (railroad west) of the Minor Road grade crossing on the Terryville Loop track that climbs to the highest point reached by rails in the state at around 775 ft in elevation. The tracks dipping down to the left are the runaround while at right is the Loop Track continuing up hill to Firestone and ClarkDeitrich in the massive former New Departures building. I calculated the grade on the loop track at around 1.3% though it certainly looks steeper here because of the way the runaround falls while the branch rises.
At left are the 6 empty tanks and 1 empty coil car they pulled on their initial trip up. And here is Pan Am local PL-1 coupling up to seven loads to shove uphill to Firestone. Alas they will never make it as a rail will roll and a joint will snap a half dozen car lengths before the gate ending their day with a few axles on the ground and ending chance at a sunny afternoon chase back to Plainville. Sadly this is nothing unusual on this job and is just PAR for the course as one wag put it!

On October 17, 2018, Montana Rail Link’s Helena switch arrives at Townsend to run around its train for the trip back to Helena yard after switching the cement plant seen in the distant background. Powering the train is a classy EMD GP9/SD45 set—Nos. 109 and 346. The SD45 was on the switch job this autumn, making another “last stand” for these brutish 20-cylinder machines on MRL. Vintage No. 109 was built in February 1955 for Northern Pacific, and has passed many times under the NP-era cantilever signal at Townsend siding’s west end. The years of service for both units combined in 2018 is a whopping 111 years!
A local CN freight led by RS-18 No. 3637 crosses Perth Street in Brockville on 9 July 1987, completing a runaround move on the spur track just north of the main line grade crossing.
Class 37 in Railfreight grey livery with large BR logo, red band with yellow cabs runs around the Stock at the loop just north of Broomhill Station where the herratige railway currently ends. Seen here getting waved forward as the driver was still operating the locomotive from the other end during Aviemore's Strathspey railway mixed traction gala.
CSX 1235 heads south towards Osborn Yard through Louisville's Germantown District with a short J757, also known as the Buckner Local. For the past few weeks, the local consisted of a single MP15T to work the industries between Louisville and Buckner, with a runaround at La Grange. Switchers are cool, but seeing one on road local duties, and facing the right way, was pretty sweet.
Finished in the attractive shade of Azzurro Celeste, this Alfa Romeo Spider 1600 Series 3 offers an eye-catching way to get into these chic Italian convertibles. The left-hand-drive, British-registered example has been in the same ownership since 2013. Before that, it was kept at its previous owner’s Portuguese villa for five years – the little sports car being the ideal runaround for the sunny Iberian peninsula.
This 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider 1600, C374 SFE, was seen at the Classic Motor Hub.
CSXT's ex Am Railways Boston based local BO-1 is running light along the busy and cluttered Everett waterfront with GMDD GP40-2LW MEC 507 (blt. Jul 1974 as CN 9472). After shoving over the Mystic from Yard 21 in Somerville with three scrap loads, they temporarily dropped those up at the 'coke works' before running down light to pull a long cut of cars from Ciment Quebec and Schnitzer Northeast. After gathering those up they took all those off the dock up to the runaround and set them over and then picked up their three scrap gons and made a third trip back down here to spot them. Having completed that they are running light making their fourth and final trip along the waterfront to head straight back home to BET in Somerville and call it a day and a weekend!
Some will laugh and some will scoff but I waited around till this final move after getting dozens of more 'conventional' scenes just to capture this admittedly unusual view. I just loved how perfectly the unit was framed by the cab of the forklift that just happened to be dressed in matching colors. Thoughts?

The first year of the Stourbridge Line’s operation occurred while freight service on the former Erie branch from the Southern Tier line at Lackawaxen to Honesdale, Pennsylvania was still being operated by the Susquehanna. Here the DLS’ former Bangor & Aroostook BL2 passes an NYSW RS2 during a runaround move in Lackawaxen. The BL2 still operates on the line, but the Alco was scrapped long ago.
Lead by Pan Am painted C40-8 no. 7542, an original CSX unit that has come full circle, M427 soaks up the low sun of an October afternoon as it heads west down the former B&M Lowell Branch in Tewksbury, MA, passing the Demoulas Runaround.
The Notch Train has finished the runaround and is ready for the trip back to North Conway as the sun breaks through clouds after a snow squall. It’s also nice to get a photo here without a car or person in sight.
CSXT's ex Am Railways Boston based local BO-1 is working the weedgrown trackage on the Everett waterfront with GMDD GP40-2LW MEC 507 (blt. Jul 1974 as CN 9472). After gathering those up they took all those off the dock up to the runaround, set them over, picked up their three scrap gons and made a third trip back down here to spot them. Once all that wad completed it was time for one final trip ligjt engine along the waterfront and straight back home to BET in Somerville to call it a day and a weekend!

St. Maries River Railroad EMD SW1200 No. 501 is backing three empty centerbeam flatcars for Stimson Lumber at Milltown, Idaho, and is about to cross Riverdale Drive. Cars for the mill are spotted directly on adjacent Milwaukee Road main line trackage with no runaround track available, hence the reason for the long back up move from St. Maries.
