Mineral Water Plant

The demand of water is increasing year after year. The per capita consumption of water has increased and given the limited resource of fresh water it is difficult for the countries to make available its population the fresh water. Keeping this situation in mind many industries have set up mineral water plant in order to obtain fresh drinking water.

Purification

The first step is water purification. Water obtained from the external source is allowed to pass through the purification unit and then stored in a stainless tank. passed through the purification plant and stored in a stainless steel tank. After purification water is taken to the bottling section. Bottling is done as a continuous operation. Purification is followed by Rinsing, Filling and Capping. The unit automatically fills, rinses, and screws the cap on it. Finally mineral water is labeled, packed and marketed.

Process of Mineral Water Plant

What is the method for mineral water processing?

Processing mineral water from underground water resource or other resources goes as follows. Motor pump is used to draw water from theses sources or source which is transported to the source water reservoir. Coagulation chemical is added to remove the settled colloidal and suspended materials contaminated in the water. Water is then sterilized using oxidants like chlorine or other chemicals to kill harmful bacteria and microorganism.

Filtration is the next step. Using filtration system like Quartz Sand Filtration System gives good purifying results. After purification water contains very little amount of suspended solids.

For further purification, water is absorbed on the activated carbon which absorbs most pollutants dissolved in water. This also helps in the removal of the odors and helps in improving the flavor of the water.

After being purified water softening is done by passing water through the tank containing sodium ion. The tank consist of resin pellets and the softening is done by ion exchange method Water still contains small micro pollutants that are removed by passing them through tanks that are meant for this purpose.

Apart from this method reverse osmosis process is also used for obtaining pure water. In this process water is purified by using semi permeable membrane. Purified water is sterilized or disinfected and then packed for market

Local water companies are supposed to provide biologically and chemically safe water that has most objectionable taste and odour causing substances removed. However this is not always the case. Not all bacteria can be removed through chemical disinfection. If you drink municipal “tap water”, you may run the risk of contracting illnesses ranging from diarrhoea to serious gastrointestinal complications. The chemicals used at public water purification facilities are health hazards to humans, as well as the germs they target. They can cause skin irritations, digestive problems and have also been linked to various forms of cancer. Another problem that public purification planets cannot address is the by-products of disinfection.

As municipal water is distributed through your home via plumbing, there is a risk of contamination from lead leaching into the water supply from pipes and/or fixtures.

So which drinking water option is best?

Did the water in the bottle you just purchased really come from the beautiful spring shown on the label? Probably not. Some of the bottle water manufacturers using marketing that are misleading, implying the water comes from pristine sources when it does not. According to various environmental sources and industry estimates about ¼ of bottled water is bottled tap water, sometimes with additional treatment, and sometimes not.

Bottled Water

Bottled water is a good emergency source of water in the event your primary water source fails or becomes contaminated. It is also a convenient source of usually safe water for drinking outside of the home. Again most bottled water will contain fewer contaminates than untreated tap water. However the great disadvantage is cost. An average family of four drinking 30 gallons of water a week will spend £300.00 just on drinking water a year.

There is also the environmental impact to consider. The PET bottles used eventually cause a waste disposal problem. Transporting these bottles from the bottler to the store and then the homes/offices also use valuable resources such as oil. There is also a potential health risk associated with plastic bottles; some researchers have suggested that plastic bottles contain the chemical BPA which may be harmful to our health. The FDA and American Plastics Association insist BPA is safe, Frederick Vom Saal, an outspoken biology professor and other scientists believe it can cause cancer, early puberty, obesity and even attention deficit disorders. Lastly there is also the inconvenience factor, of having to move and store the bottles safely.

Water Filters

There are over 2,500 different models manufactured by more than 500 companies. However the basic concept behind nearly all filters is very simple. They work by physically preventing contaminants from moving through the filter. There are 4 main types of filters

(1) Sediment Filters - trap contaminants by screening them out with very small pores. Basically come in 2 varieties – Fibre and Ceramic. Fibre filters contain cellulose, rayon or some other fibrous material spun into a mesh with small pores, while ceramic filters contain some ceramic materials with smaller pores than fibre filters. Sediment filters are often used as pre-filters to reduce the suspended contaminants that could clog carbon filters or RO filters.

(2) Carbon Filters - trap contaminants by attracting them through the process of absorption to the surface of carbon particles. Two types of carbon filters – Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) and Solid Block Activated Carbon (SBAC).

Contaminant reduction in carbon filters takes place by the physical removal of the contaminant by blocking any particles too big to pass through the pores, or through absorption by which a variety of dissolved contaminates are attracted to and held on the surface of the carbon particles.

The disadvantages of carbon filters include the fact that water is able to channel around the granules in GAC filters to avoid filtration, and pockets of contaminated water can form in loose bed of carbon granules. Also carbon filters by themselves, cannot trap bacteria, therefore should never be relied on exclusively to provide protection from contamination. Lastly hot water should never be run through a carbon filter.

(3) Reverse Osmosis Filters – use water pressure to force water molecules through a membrane that has extremely tiny pores, leaving the large contaminants behind.

This is a separation process which uses water pressure to force water molecules through a semipermeable membrane. Purified water is collected from the “clean” side of the membrane, and water containing the contaminants is flushed down the drain from the “contaminated” side. The advantage of this process is that it significantly reduces salt, most other inorganic material present in the water, and some organic compounds. Used on conjunction with a quality carbon filter, the purity of the treated water approaches that produced by distillation. Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems can typically purify more water per day than distillers and are less expensive to operate and maintain. On the other hand the disadvantages include the fact that RO systems make only a few gallons of treated water a day. Also the systems waste water, with two-four gallons of waste water flushed away for each gallon of filtered water produced. Additionally some pesticides, solvents and organic chemicals are not completely removed by RO. A further point is that RO systems require high maintenance. Pre and post filters and the RO membranes much be changed regularly.

(4) KDF Filters – use electrochemical oxidation and reduction to eliminate contaminants from water.

These filters use a matrix of zinc/copper alloy, which eliminate contaminants from water by utilizing electrochemical oxidation reduction. This has the ability to remove chlorine, hydrogen sulphide, iron, lead, cadmium, aluminium, mercury, arsenic and other inorganic compounds, kill algae and fungi, control bacterial growth in the filter.

The advantage of KDF filters is that it is the only filter medium that removes contaminants from running hot water, which makes them ideal for use in showers. The filters also change the free chlorine that some people are allergic to, into a form (zinc chloride) that is much easily tolerated. The disadvantages include that fact that by themselves KDF filters do not remove organic compounds or parasitic cysts. Additionally the filters need to be backwashed periodically with hot water to remove insoluble contaminants which wastes many gallons of hot water.

Boiling

In an emergency, this is the best way to purify water that may be unsafe due to the presence of protozoan, parasites or bacteria. The water should be brought to a boil and continue boiling for 3 minutes. The water needs to be kept covered while cooling.

Obvious advantage is that pathogens that may still be lurking in the water will be killed if the water is boiled long enough. Additionally boiling will drive out some of the organic compounds that may be in the water. However as a word of caution, boiling should not be used when toxic metals, chemicals (lead, mercury, asbestos, solvents etc.) or nitrates have contaminated the water. Also boiling may also concentrate any harmful contaminants that do not vaporise as the relatively pure water vapour boils off.

Ultra Violet Light

In this process the water passes through a clear chamber where it is exposed to an ultra violet (UV) light. The UV light effectively destroys bacteria and viruses. However, how well the UV system works depends on the energy dose that the organism absorbs. If the energy dose is not high enough, the organism’s genetic material may only be damaged and not destroyed.

The advantage of using UV lights is that no known toxic or non-toxic by-products are introduced, additionally it leaves no smell or taste in the treated water, and requires very little contact time. Furthermore while it kills all the pathogenic microorganisms it does not affect the minerals in the water. However UV radiation is not suitable for water in high levels of suspended solids, and it is not effective against non-living contaminants such as lead, asbestos, many organic chemicals, chlorine etc. It also requires electricity to operate. Therefore it is usually only used as a final purification stage on some filtration systems, as part of a water system in conjunction with a carbon filter and or RO system.

Distillation

This is the reverse of boiling. The water is usually boiled in a chamber causing water to vaporize, with the pure steam leaving the non-volatile contaminants behind. The steam moves to a different part of the unit and is cooled until it condenses back into liquid water. The resulting distillates drip into the storage container. Salts, sediment, metals etc. that won’t boil or evaporate remains in the distiller and removed. A vapour trap or carbon filter is usually used with a distiller to ensure the more complete removal of contaminants. The obvious advantage of this system is that a good distillation unit produces very pure water, and it also removes pathogens in the water, mostly by killing and leaving them behind when the water evaporates. A countertop distillation unit is an expensive home water treatment method. It is not very efficient as it takes time to purify the water, and electricity is being consumed continuously. The boiler also needs to be cleaned regularly in addition to the condensation compartment and storage tanks.

Ozonation

The formation of oxygen into ozone occurs with the use of energy. This process is carried out by an electric discharge field as in the CD (corona discharge of lightening) type ozone generators or by UV radiation as in UV type ozone generators.

Ozone is a naturally occurring component of fresh air, and is produced by the UV rays of the sun reacting with the Earth’s upper atmosphere. Ozone is a very reactive and unstable gas with a short half-life before it reverts back to oxygen. It is the most powerful and rapid acting oxidizer man can produce, and will oxidize all bacteria, mold and yeast spores, organic material and viruses given sufficient exposure. The main advantage of ozone is as a primary disinfectant that effectively kills biological contaminants, as well as oxidizes and precipitates iron, sulphur and manganese so they can be filtered out. Additionally Ozone breaks downs many organic chemicals including those that cause odour and taste problems, and itself has no taste or odour. The main disadvantage of ozone treatment is that it can create undesirable by-products which may be harmful to health if they are not controlled such as formaldehyde and bromate. In addition ozone is not effective in removing dissolved minerals and salts, and the effectiveness of the process is based on a good mix of ozone with water, ozone does not dissolve particularly well. Again it needs to be a component of a water treatment system, rather than a stand -alone treatment on its own.

So what’s the answer?

There is a new technology that offers a remarkable solution to the global water crisis. This technology has been developed and now in use in air water generators (AWGs) also known as atmospheric water generators. This technology converts the water in the air into portable water. In other words it can produce water out of thin air.

Hard water is a common issue throughout Canada and North America. While it is not considered dangerous to health, hard water can be problematic in a variety of ways around the home. So, here we’ll explore how to determine if your home has hard water and what you can do to correct the issue.

The Problems With Hard Water

Hard water contains high levels of minerals, specifically calcium, magnesium, and possibly iron. While these minerals are considered essential for human health when in significant quantities in your water, it can create a number of issues around your home. Hard water minerals accumulate to cause scale. This can be visible around fixtures such as shower heads and taps, but it can also be hidden inside pipes and water using appliances. Unfortunately, this scale not only impedes water flow, but it can also create energy efficiency problems, as the scale accumulates around heating elements, forcing appliances to work harder. Eventually, this scale build up will compromise the lifespan of your appliances, forcing premature replacement.

Hard water can also cause problems with laundry, dish washing, and bathing. You may notice spots on your glassware, your whites may look dull and gray, or your skin may feel dry and itchy. All of these issues are related to hard water. The hard water minerals interfere with the lather capabilities of soaps and detergent. This impedes cleaning and may create a scum that is difficult to rinse. This soap scum can even remain on your skin and hair, causing itchy, irritated skin and dull, hard to style hair. If you have experienced any of these issues, it is likely that you have hard water and you’ll need to determine the level of hardness in your water.

DIY Testing

If you’re unsure whether your home is affected by hard water, there is a simple way to perform a DIY check. This can be performed at home to determine if you need to take further action. You’ll need some pure liquid soap and a clear water bottle.

First, fill your container, such as an empty plastic bottle, approximately a third of the way to the top with tap water.

Add approximately ten drops of your liquid soap into the container. Pure liquid soap will work best for this. Any soap labelled as detergent will contain additives that can affect the results of this testing, so try to stick to pure soap varieties, such as Castile soap that does not contain perfumes or dyes.

Put the lid on the container and shake for at least ten seconds. You want to mix the soap and water in an attempt to make bubbles.

Once you’ve shaken the bottle, it’s time to check the results. If you can see a decent amount of soap suds on top and nice, clear water underneath, your water is relatively soft. If your bottle doesn’t contain many suds even after a vigorous shaking and the water looks cloudy, it is a good indication that you have hard water.

If preferred, you can keep adding more soap and shaking to continue this test. Just remember the more soap needed to create bubbles, the greater your water hardness.

The reason this test provides insight into your water hardness is that the hard water minerals prevent soap from creating suds and cleaning effectively. The sap binds with the dissolved minerals to form a cloudy liquid that will leave a residue on your dishes, shower, clothing, hair, and skin.

Detergents are formulated with additives to create suds in hard water. This is why these products shouldn’t be used in the above test. Unfortunately, even if you’re using these products, you’ll still need to use increasing quantities in hard water to get those all important suds.

Accurate Water Testing

While this DIY test can provide you with some information, it is not completely accurate. This test will highlight a hard water problem, but it won’t provide a precise number of the water hardness level of your supply. This test highlights a need for more accurate water testing.

A water treatment expert can provide this form of testing. The technician is equipped to test water for the hardness level, pH, total dissolved solids and other possible contaminants. This testing can be tailored to check for the contaminants that are common in your geographical area. For example, if you live in a rural area, it is a good idea to check for nitrates and other chemicals associated with agricultural runoff. The technician can help you to identify the underlying cause of any water problems you may be experiencing, such as strange tastes, odours or aesthetic qualities, such as strange colours.

Treatment Options

Once you have had accurate testing performed, your water technician can help you to understand the testing results and guide you through the treatment options. If the only water quality issue is high hardness levels, a water softener is likely to be the best choice. These devices use ion exchange to replace the magnesium and calcium with sodium ions. This immediately creates softer water to eliminate any hard water issues around your home.

If you have more extensive water quality issues, you are likely to need other types of water treatment. For example, Reverse Osmosis systems can be used to eliminate up to 99.9% of waterborne contaminants. This is a particularly effective treatment method for heavy metals, minerals, bacteria, and viruses. Unfortunately, the semipermeable membrane in RO systems can be vulnerable to clogging and damage if you have high total dissolved solids. In this scenario, you may need to introduce a pre-filter to remove any sediment and larger particles of dissolved solids before it is passed through the RO membrane.

If you have concerns or questions about your water quality, you should consult a professional water quality expert. An experienced professional can perform on site water testing to check for hard water and other contaminants before recommending the treatment options best suited to your water conditions.

Surface Water Treatment System

For downstream water treatment or distribution system for municipal applications, pre treatment is necessary. While pretreatment it is must to ensure that water so treated becomes free from all sorts of suspended solid, organics, colloidal matter, iron manganese etc. The common pretreatment process and equipments that are generally used for surface water are:

Micro-filtration

Clarifiers (both solid contact clarifiers and inclined plate clarifiers)

Filters

Chlorination system

Filters- Pressure and Gravity types

Chemical feed system

For the better quality of water, various types of advanced membrane technologies like RO, NF (nanofiltration) are used for surface water pretreatment in order to provide potable drinking water to the locality. Similar techniques and equipments are used for pre treating municipal wastewater. Micro- filtration system is considered as the most advanced technology for treating municipal water. The municipal wastewater treatment follow the following sequence:

The conventional plants as compared to micro filtration occupies a small area thereby reducing required space and also cost of installation. This type of process is easy to operate and their maintenance is easy and cost effective.

Reverse Osmosis plant is considered as one of the most easy

method for desalinization of waters like sea water, Reverse

is one major difference. In brackish water treatment,

additional pretreatment of water is done to increase the

By Mark Nelson President Nelson Water:

With more than 30 years’ experience in the residential and commercial water treatment space, Mark Nelson is a Class 1 Drinking-Water Operator and a CBWA (Canadian Bottled Water Association) Certified Plant Operator. As founder and president of Nelson Water in Ottawa, Mark focuses on dealing with challenging water treatment system designs for problem water. He also heads the largest water bottling plant in the city of Ottawa with a delivery network throughout the Valley.

Would you feel confident that your drinking water is safe during an emergency? While uncommon in Canada, it is possible for floods, hurricanes and even a broken water main to interrupt your regular water service. Generally, during an emergency, authorities recommend drinking sterilized or bottled water to avoid being harmed by disease causing microorganisms or pollutants that could be in the water. Since there may be a rush for bottled water at the store, it is crucial to know how to sterilise your water to ensure that you and your family are protected.

Don’t Rely on How Your Water Looks

Although cloudy water is an obvious sign that there is a water quality issue, you need to remember that not all contaminants will affect how your water looks. In an emergency, your water may still appear clear, but it could be harbouring potentially harmful contaminants. Some of the most dangerous water contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, and heavy metals are undetectable to the naked eye. So, if an emergency alert has been issued or your home has been affected by flooding, storms or a hurricane, you can’t assume that your water is safe and need to take action. Fortunately, there are some effective ways to ensure that your water is safe to drink and use around the home.

Sterilisation Methods

There are a number of ways to sterilise the water you have available to make it safe for drinking, cooking, preparing meals, brushing your teeth and cleaning. You only need a small amount of contaminated water to make you sick, so you need to ensure proper sterilisation methods. The most effective sterilisation methods are:

Boiling: Boiling is a highly effective way to sterilise water if you have power. You’ll need to allow cloudy water to settle and run it through a paper towel or coffee filter to remove any sediment. You can then bring your water to a rolling boil for approximately three minutes. While lower altitudes can have sterilised water by boiling for a minute or two, it is best to err on the side of caution. Boiling can leave water tasting a little flat, but this can be remedied by adding a pinch of salt, preferably mineral rich pink salt.

Household Bleach: If it is not possible to boil your water, you can still sterilise it using regular chlorine bleach. You should only use a food grade, unscented regular type of bleach to ensure safety. As with boiling, you can remove any sediment by allowing cloudy water to settle and filter using a paper towel or coffee filter. Next, use a clean medicine dropper to add six drops of your bleach for every gallon of water. If your water is very cold or cloudy, you should double the bleach. Stir your water and allow it to stand for at least thirty minutes. Your water will have a slight chlorine smell, and if this is not detectable, repeat this process and allow it to stand again. If your water has a strong or unpalatable chlorine smell or taste, pour it into a fresh container and let it stand for at least an hour.

There are also several types of water treatment system that can be beneficial during an emergency situation. UV water disinfection, RO systems, and gravity water filtration systems can ensure that your water is safe for consumption.

Be Wary of Other Contaminants

Unfortunately, disinfection and boiling may be sufficient for some contaminants, but it will not destroy some others. Salts, heavy metals and many chemicals will not be affected by these two methods, and in fact, concentrations may actually increase due to evaporation during boiling. Since you need to have properly cleaned water for cooking, preparing drinks, washing dishes, brushing teeth and in some cases of water contamination, bathing, you will need a more effective form of water treatment. Fortunately, as mentioned above, there are a number of domestic water treatment systems that can protect your water supply in the event of an emergency. This includes:

RO Systems: Reverse Osmosis uses a semi permeable membrane to trap contaminants and allow clean water to pass through. RO systems can remove 99.9 percent of water contaminants including heavy metals, bacteria, viruses, and common chemical contaminants.

Filtration: There are a number of filtration systems that can provide clean water in an emergency. Domestic systems can be created with a series of filters and pre-treatment stages to remove sediment, chemicals, and other harmful contaminants.

You also need to consider whether a point of use system or whole house system would provide the best option for your home. Point of use systems can be helpful in a kitchen where you prepare drinks and make meals. Unfortunately, some contaminants affecting water supplies in an emergency may not only be a problem for ingestion. Some contaminants can be hazardous due to skin exposure. This means that when you bathe or wash your clothing, you will come into contact with potentially hazardous chemicals or compounds. Since the skin is the largest organ of the body, exposure due to bathing in contaminated water could have serious health consequences. There are also health issues posed by chemical inhalation, so you will suffer exposure from the running water in your shower. In these types of scenario, a whole house system will offer complete protection. A whole house system treats water as it enters your home, so clean water is supplied to all of your taps and fixtures.

Preparing for an emergency water situation can provide reassurance that you and your family will be able to cope if adverse weather or even a broken water main effects your water supply. Water is vital for every aspect of life, and you need to know that you have a safe supply in an emergency situation. An experienced water treatment technician can not only assess your current water quality, but also guide you through the treatment options that will improve your water quality and provide protection in the event of an emergency.

Water is all around us, but this doesn’t mean that many of us fully understand it. Whether you’re considering water treatment options or simply want to have confidence in your water quality, you’re likely to have questions. So, here we’ll answer some frequently asked water questions.

Are There Bugs In Water?

Raw water can contain a number of microorganisms. While some of these are healthy, there are some that are not so healthy. Bacteria, viruses and protozoan parasites are some of the common disease causing organisms found in water supplies. Waterborne pathogenic bacteria include Salmonella, Legionella, Helicobacter pylori, Escherichia coli, and Vibrio cholerae. Waterborne viruses include Hepatitis A, while common protozoan parasites include Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

What Contaminants are Common in Drinking Water From Private Wells or Dugouts?

If your drinking water is sourced from a private supply, such as a well or dugout, you will be responsible for ensuring that your water is safe. Prairie water is generally from shallow water sources that provide an ideal environment for algae growth, due to the nutrient rich water. Campylobacter is a common type of bacteria in Prairie water. There are over 200 reported cases of campylobacteriosis each year in Saskatchewan, while Giardia causes over 100 cases of Beaver Fever each year in the area.

In a number of Agriculture Canada cited studies, 30 to 35 percent of the wells in Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Alberta exceed the safe bacteria levels, with 92 percent of the private wells in Alberta and 99 percent in Saskatchewan exceeding the Canadian guidelines for health and non health parameters. This includes issues such as hardness, manganese, sodium, sulfate, iron, colour and dissolved organic carbon. Additionally, water from shallow sources can contain high levels of pesticides from runoff, arsenic, turbidity, and cyanobacteria. These contaminants are not only unhealthy, but make the water difficult to treat without large quantities of disinfectant such as chlorine.

How Often Should Well or Dugout Drinking Water Be Tested?

A basic water test package for potability will assess the coliform bacteria, pH, nitrates, sodium, fluoride, iron, sulphate and manganese levels. The testing will also measure the total dissolved solids and water hardness. If there is a possibility of additional contamination, the testing could include selenium, arsenic, pesticides or uranium.

It is recommended that domestic water supplies are tested at least once each year, with surface water, and shallow wells tested more frequently. You should test your surface water sources once in summer and again in winter at a minimum due to the seasonal variation. Water should be tested both at the tap and the source to ensure consistent water quality and to confirm that your treatment system is offering adequate protection.

Who is Responsible for the Provision of Safe Drinking Water?

Although there are legislative water standards in Europe and the United States, there are only guidelines in place in Canada. These have been negotiated between provincial and federal agencies, which produced less stringent guidelines compared to Europe and America.

Here each territorial and provincial government has the responsibility for drinking water provisions. The only exception is national parks, military bases, and native reservations, which are under federal jurisdiction. Since Canada has delegated the water responsibility to provincial agencies, there are some, such as those with low populations that have difficulties in dealing with complicated water problems and issues. For example, the recommendation for TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) in Canada is a maximum of 500 milligrams per litre, but the Saskatchewan recommendation is 1,500 milligrams due to the naturally high TDS levels in the area.

What Treatment Methods Are Employed for Safe Drinking Water?

Conventional water treatment methods include sedimentation, coagulation, filtration and finally disinfection. Sedimentation and coagulation are used to remove the larger particles from the water, while filtration can remove smaller substances include dissolved material and viruses. Generally, filtration will not be sufficient for eliminating all bacteria and viruses, so disinfection with chlorine is a final step in the treatment process. There are other disinfection methods such as UV that are becoming more popular.

What Home Water Treatment Methods Are Available?

Where drinking water standards are stringently followed, most people do not need water treatment, but as an extra precaution, or where the treatment facilities may not adhere to proper standards, additional treatment is required. Fortunately, there are a number of treatment options to remove many types of contaminants.

To determine the most appropriate water treatment system, you will need to test your raw water. This will allow you to assess what contaminants need to be removed and base your treatment method on the results.

The most efficient water treatment system is Reverse Osmosis that can remove up to 99.9% of waterborne contaminants. These systems use pre-filters that need to be changed regularly, but are otherwise almost maintenance free. Unfortunately, the semi permeable membrane of an RO system can easily become clogged when concentrations of TDS are particularly high, so you may need a system with additional filters.

Should I Get a Water Softener for Hard Water?

Even if your water is treated at a sophisticated facility, it may still have a high mineral content. This is referred to as Hard Water, and while it is not considered dangerous, it can cause problems around your home. Hard water can allow mineral deposits to accumulate as scale inside your pipes, fixtures, and water using appliances. It can also cause laundry and bathing problems as the minerals interfere with the lathering of soaps, detergents, and shampoos. For this reason, water softeners are a popular method of domestic water treatment. Water softeners use ion exchange to remove the magnesium, calcium, and iron and replace it with sodium or potassium ions. This will immediately improve your water quality and help to prolong the lifespan of your appliances.

If you have concerns about your water quality, you should speak to a water treatment professional. An experienced technician can not only test your water to determine the contaminant levels, but also guide you through the treatment options that are best suited to the characteristics of your water supply.

Reverse Osmosis is the reverse process of natural osmosis. Solutions with low salinity and low density have a natural tendency to migrate to solutions with high salinity and high density. Reverse osmosis membrane divides the water into two pass way, the Permeated water pass through the RO membrane to the clean water tank, and the rejected water going to the waste solution tank. The RO system will remove the majority of dissolved salts, contaminants, bacteria, and things that make water taste bad. By applying pressure the efficiency of purifying water is greater than the naturally Reverse Osmosis.

When water pressure is under 40 PSI, The RO system may generate less RO water while having more contaminant in the RO water. Most RO membranes need a water pressure of at least 60 PSI. A LEFOO RO AC pump will bump the water pressure to 75 PSI. LEFOO also offers custom RO pumps with over 80 PSI pressure.

REVERSE OSMOSIS PRE-PERMEATE TREATMENT

Pre-Permeate is critical for the lasting of an RO water system to prevent fouling, and too frequent cleanings, and premature failure of the span RO membrane. Here is common RO system issues about Pre-Permeate

Fouling happens when contaminants accumulate and clogging on the membrane surface. There are many contaminants in municipal feed water that are naked to the human eye and harmless for human consumption, but large enough to quickly foul (or clog) an Reverse Osmosis System. Fouling typically exists in the front end of a bare RO system without filters and results in a lower actual RO pressure and a lower permeate flow.

FOULING CAN BE CAUSED BY THE FOLLOWING:

1.Particulate or colloidal matter (dirt, silt, clay, etc.)

2.Organics (humic/fulvic acids, etc)

3.Microorganisms (bacteria, etc). B

4.Breakthrough of filter media upstream of the RO unit. GAC carbon beds and softener beds may develop an under-drain leak and if there is not adequate post-filtration in place the media can foul the RO system.

5.SCALING: An example of a common scale that tends to form on an RO membrane is calcium carbonate (CaCO3).

6.CHEMICAL ATTACK: Oxidizers such as chlorine will 'burn' holes in the membrane pores and can cause irreparable damage.

7.MECHANICAL DAMAGE

'Dry Start' may generate excessive back pressure that can cause permanent membrane damage, you might need a pressure switch to protect the RO system.

PRE-PERMEATE SOLUTIONS

Here are Pre-Permeatesolutions for RO systems

1.A Multi-Media Filter (MMF)is used to help prevent fouling of an RO system.

It is important to have a 5 micron cartridge filter placed directly after the MMF unit to prevent the MMF media from damaging downstream pumps and fouling the RO system.

2.Microfiltration (MF) is effective in removing colloidal and bacteria matter and has a pore size of only 0.1-10µm.

3.Antiscalants and scale inhibitors are chemicals that can be added to feed water before an RO unit to help reduce the scaling potential of the feed water.

4.A water softener can be used to help prevent scaling in an RO system by exchanging scale-forming ions with nonscale forming ions.

5.By adding sodium bisulfite (SBS or SMBS), which is a reducer, to the water stream before an RO at the proper dose you can remove residual chlorine.

6.Granular activated carbon is used for both removing organic constituents and residual disinfectants (such as chlorine and chloramines) from water.

Those Pre-Permeate Solutions need correct designs, maintenance programs, and experienced service support, your RO water system could serve many years of high purity water. Most RO membranes need at least 60 psi pressure to work well, if the water pressure is too low you need to retrofitted an AC RO pump.

Reverse Osmosis Desalination

The technique used for high-quality cleaned water, such as semiconductor processing or biochemical applications, is called Reverse Osmosis. RO uses a combination of filtration technologies to reduce unwanted impurities in water supply. The Reverse Osmosis Desalination is famous because it can produce great tasting, very pure water at very reasonable cost without any trouble. It has fully automatic functions. RO Systems illuminate the inorganic chemicals, microorganism and produce the clean water.

For many of us, the drinking water quality in our homes is less than ideal. Unfortunately, there are some myths surrounding domestic water treatment systems that leave homeowners wondering if water from water softeners is actually safe to drink. So, here we’ll explore this topic in further detail so you can have the facts to make an informed decision for your home and family.

Drinking Salt Water

When you start to research water softeners, you’re likely to immediately read that these devices use ion exchange to replace the calcium and magnesium minerals causing hard water with sodium. This may make you immediately wonder if you’ll need up drinking salty water.

The amount of sodium used during the water softening process will vary according to the hardness of your untreated tap water, but depending on the type of sodium used, even very hard water will not require massive amounts. Generally, only small amounts of sodium are put into water treated with a softener. This is typically approximately 12.5 milligrams per glass. This is a safe level for those on a normal, healthy diet. For comparison, a slice of bread can contain approximately 100 milligrams of sodium, so this is far less. If you are concerned about your salt intake or need to be on a low salt diet, you may need to consider other water treatment methods.

Is Filtered Water Better than Softened Water?

There is some concern that filtered water is a healthier option than softened water. Since softening removes calcium and magnesium, there is a view that you may be missing out on vital minerals. The World Health Organization does recommend getting 10% of your daily magnesium and calcium needs from our drinking water, but if you have a varied diet, this should not be necessary. If you do have concerns about losing these essential minerals, you may wish to consider a water ionizer or other type of water treatment system that can reduce water hardness, while allowing some minerals to remain in your drinking water.

Removing More than Water Hardness Minerals

If your water quality is poor, you may need to consider more than just removing the water hardness minerals. Fortunately, there are a number of treatment options including Reverse Osmosis. RO systems can provide a solution if your water quality is particularly bad, such as a rotten egg smell, or strong odours from proximity to coal mining, processing, hydraulic “fracking” operations or any other source of potential chemical pollution.

Reverse Osmosis systems can remove 99.9% of contaminants commonly found in water supplies. The water is passed through a semipermeable membrane to produce almost pure water. This is an effective way to remove heavy metals, minerals, viruses, and even bacteria. This can make your drinking water safe even if it contains e.coli and other potentially harmful bacteria.

So, When is a Water Softener a Good Option?

Hard water can be a massive problem around the home as mineral deposits are created to clog up appliances, fixtures, and plumbing. Water softeners provide a great solution for this problem as the ion exchange process can remove the amount of magnesium and calcium found in your tap water.

Ion exchange works on a relatively simple principle. Inside the softener is a special resin containing negatively charged beads to attract and trap the magnesium and calcium ions. Over time, these beads lose their effectiveness and need to be recharged with sodium or potassium salts. This recharge process does leave some salt in the charged resin beads that end up in the drinking water.

A water softener improves the water quality for bathing, cleaning, washing, and drinking. It can be a useful tool to protect your plumbing and appliances from hard water deposits. If you have concerns about sodium in your drinking water, it is possible to have a bypass for your water softener system at your kitchen sink. This will allow you to access regular water for all of your drinking and cooking needs.

Should You Have a Bypass For Drinking Water in Your Home?

Homes built after the 1980s must include a freshwater bypass that is built into the plumbing system, to allow water straight from a kitchen tap. Additionally, most water softener systems are installed with a bypass that is specifically for this purpose. Since water softeners are designed to just address hard water issues, you may need another treatment system to remove any toxins or unpleasant aesthetic qualities from your drinking water. This means that the bypass can feed into an RO system or water ionizer to provide you with filtered drinking water.

Using a Water Ionizer With Your Water Softener

If your home currently has a water softener, you can still add a water ionizer to improve the quality of your drinking water. The water ionizer should bypass the softener and be connected directly to your water source. A water ionizer allows hard water to hydrate better and can improve the bio-availability of the minerals in your tap water. This will enable you to benefit from the essential minerals in your water, as they contribute to providing alkaline water. While a water softener can make your tap water safe for appliances and plumbing, it doesn’t particularly improve your drinking water quality. Although hard water minerals can affect cooking and hot drinks prepared with tap water, a softener may not make an appreciable difference to your drinking water quality. Teaming a water softener with a water ionizer allows you to enjoy both protection for your appliances and plumbing, and fresh, delicious drinking water.

Ionized water can improve hydration and will still provide for approximately 10% of the recommended daily needs of magnesium and calcium. Since the water is more alkaline, it may also provide further help benefits. Research suggests that the more alkaline your drinking water, the greater the protective effects on the arteries and heart. So, you can enjoy numerous health benefits and a delicious taste.

If you are still confused about which water treatment system is best for your home and family, be sure to speak to a water treatment professional. An experienced technician can not only test your water supply, but also guide you through the treatment options most appropriate to your water quality issues.
