Roxy Music attained popular and critical success in the UK and Europe during the 1970s and early 1980s, beginning with their debut album, Roxy Music (1972).[1] The band was highly influential, as leading proponents of the more experimental, musically sophisticated element of Glam, as well as a significant influence on early, English punk music. They also provided a model for many New Wave acts and the experimental electronic groups of the early 1980s. The group is distinguished by their visual and musical sophistication and their preoccupation with style and glamour.[2] Ferry and co-founding member Eno have also had influential solo careers, the latter becoming one of the most significant record producers and collaborators of the late 20th century, with credits including albums by David Bowie, Devo, Talking Heads, U2 and Coldplay. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Roxy Music #98 on its "The Immortals - 100 The Greatest Artists of All Time" list.[3]

The Old Town

In 1914 the museum opened as the world's first open-air museum of its kind, concentrating on town culture rather than village culture.

A part of the museum is based on the year 1974. Shops, cars and appartments...everything is 70`s style.

Den Gamle By, deutsch „die alte Stadt“, ist ein Freilichtmuseum in Aarhus, Dänemark. Im Gegensatz zu den meisten Freilichtmuseen hat es nicht die ländliche, sondern die städtische Kultur und Geschichte zum Gegenstand. Als solches ist es das älteste seiner Art.

Ein Teil des Museums zeigt das Leben der 70er Jahre. Geschäfte, Wohnungen und Autos. Eine dänische Häuserzeile aus dem Jahr 1974.

The album cover was conceived by Peter Saville and photographed by Neil Kirk. The front cover models are Aimee Stephenson (at the front, died in 2002) and Shelley Mann; the model on the back cover is Roslyn Bolton (her modelling name was Ashley). Stephenson can also be seen in a Levi's Route 66 commercial of 1976. There was no input from Bryan Ferry regarding the album jacket.

The artwork was designed by Peter Saville. Avalon continued the tradition for Roxy Music albums to feature images of women on the cover artwork. Bryan Ferry's girlfriend (and soon to be wife) Lucy Helmore appeared on the album cover.

The scene was captured by photographer Neil Kirk at dawn, looking out over Lough Ugga Beag, Connemara. A robed figure wearing a mediaeval helmet is pictured from behind facing a body of water. A hooded Merlin falcon is perched on the gloved hand, evoking King Arthur's last journey to the mysterious land of Avalon.

In November 1982, Bryan Ferry told the LA Weekly's Don Waller: “[Avalon] is the Isle of Enchantment, a fantasy place, a very romantic place… I thought this was the most romantic, dream-like album I’d ever done. I started working on the songs for Avalon on the west coast of Ireland, on the very lake that’s used in the photograph on the album cover".
