Space Science image of the week:

 

Diffuse, water-ice clouds, a hazy sky and a light breeze. Such might have read a weather forecast for the Tharsis volcanic region on Mars on 22 November 2016, when this image was taken by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter.

 

Clouds, most likely of water-ice, and atmospheric haze in the sky are coloured blue/white in this image.

 

Below, 630 km west of the volcano Arsia Mons, the southernmost of the Tharsis volcanoes, outlines of ancient lava flows dominate the surface. The dark streaks are due to the action of wind on the dark-coloured basaltic sands, while redder patches are wind blown dust. A handful of small impact craters can also be seen.

 

The Trace Gas Orbiter, a joint effort between ESA and Roscosmos, arrived at Mars on 19 October last year. Since March it has been repeatedly surfing in and out of the atmosphere, generating a tiny amount of drag that will steadily pull it into a near-circular 400 km altitude orbit. It is expected to begin its full science operational phase from this orbit in early 2018.

 

Prior to this ‘aerobraking’ phase, several test periods were assigned to check the four science instrument suites from orbit and to refine data processing and calibration techniques.

 

The false-colour composite shown here was made from images taken with the Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System, CaSSIS, in the near-infrared, red and blue channels.

 

The image is centred at 131°W / 8.5°S. The ground resolution is 20.35 m/pixel, and the image is about 58 km across. At the time the image was taken, the altitude was 1791 km, yielding a ground track speed of 1.953 km/s.

Dressed in their Sokol suits, NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, Roscosmos commander Oleg Novitsky and ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet are ready for the final examination on the Soyuz spacecraft that will take them to the International Space Station next month.

 

The exams are held at Star City near Moscow, Russia, in a mockup Soyuz. Over many hours the astronauts enact a launch and docking to the International Space Station, with instructors throwing in a few malfunctions for good measure.

 

Based on how they perform, the trio will be declared fit to fly the Soyuz. They will fly to the Station on a new model of Soyuz ferry designated MS: ‘modernised systems’. This will be the third launch of the lighter, upgraded vehicle. A new spacecraft means new flight procedures, so Oleg, Thomas and Peggy have more homework than usual to master the controls.

 

Thomas will act as copilot to commander Oleg, assisting him during the critical phases of launch, docking and landing.

We seldom use the big lenses inside the International Space Station… but it’s still 70m long, so I can play paparazzi from the forward end of the Station and shoot Oleg at the back end of it. I haven't introduced Oleg yet, we already spent six months in space together and many more on Earth training, as he was my Soyuz commander for mission Proxima. A great guy and a perfect commander he has taught me a lot. It is a lucky privilege to be able to return to space with the same people, not many astronaut expeditions align like this. I am lucky to be reunited with Shane in space and also Oleg. With Oleg we are planned to share the full six months again, whereas my path crossed with Shane in space last time for only half an Expedition.

 

Nous utilisons rarement les grands objectifs à l'intérieur de l'ISS... celui-ci fait tout de même 70 m de long, ce qui m’a permis de jouer les paparazzi : posté à l'extrémité avant de l'ISS, j’ai photographié Oleg à l'arrière de celle-ci ! Je n'ai pas encore (re)présenté Oleg. Nous avons passé six mois ensemble dans l'espace et bien plus encore sur Terre à nous entraîner, puisqu'il était mon commandant de Soyouz pour la mission Proxima. Un type formidable et un commandant parfait, j’ai beaucoup appris avec lui. C'est un privilège de pouvoir retourner dans l'espace avec les mêmes personnes, peu d'expéditions d'astronautes s'alignent comme cela. J'ai même la chance de retrouver 2 anciens co-équipiers pour cette mission : Shane, avec qui j’avais passé la moitié de ma 1re mission, et Oleg avec qui je devrais partager à nouveau les 6 mois complets.

The rim of this ice-rich crater catches the early morning sunlight in the high northern latitudes of Mars, imaged by the CaSSIS camera onboard ESA’s ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter on 26 October 2019.

 

This image features a simple 7 km-wide bowl-shaped crater pictured in the early morning. The sunlight falling on the ice deposits on the crater’s north-facing walls causes the ice to appear extremely bright. Ice fills much of the crater floor, and coats part of the surrounding terrain.

 

While the image was taken during the summer months, some shadowed regions receive fewer hours of sunlight on average throughout the year, so they trap permanent deposits of water ice.

Thanks to the crew of Soyuz MS-08 spacecraft, we now have the opportunity to enjoy new photographs of the International Space Station! We want to extend our thanks to the cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev and NASA astronauts Andrew Feustel and Richard Arnold along with everyone who took part in organizing the space photoshoot and helping to correct the program of the manned spacecraft’s descent from the orbit for this wonderful gift just in time for the station’s anniversary.
