Anyone that visited Rome will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the centre. Photographers from all over the world come to that same spot to make a sunset image of the Ponte Sant'Angelo and the St. Peters basilica. So I don't pretend that this image of mine is unique. The Roman city-council is fixing a lot of the old buildings and also one in this view. That's no problem for me. But when they permit a German car manufacturer to place an ad with bright white light on the restoration-site .... hmmm, that's a different story.
I got 2 choices here: one was leaving the ad (the size of the building lit up by a bright white light) in the centre of my frame. Or two: plant a tree in front of it and getting the chance of being accused of manipulating the truth. Since I'm a professional forester I chose the latter.
Sorry folks, but I think this serves a good cause, and it makes the image unique (in a way)... ;-)

A sprawling mass of ruins, the Roman Forum (Fori Imperiali) was once the center of ancient Rome, with temples, courts, markets, and government buildings in full swing until the 4th century AD. While all that remains today is an array of ancient columns and arches, the forum is one of the most important archaeological sites in Italy, and excavations occur to this day. Aside from a lesson in Roman history, visitors can get a great view of the Eternal City from the overlooking Palatine and Capitoline hills.

this shot was taken last fall on my first night in Rome, actually my first night in Italy...I've spent a lot of time in Europe over the years, but always seemed to be saving Italy for some special, yet undefined occasion. So when some friends asked me to join them on a cruise of the western med last fall (another first) i jumped on it. I was in Rome on my own a few days on each end of the cruise.
I had literally just arrived when this picture was taken...I was shattered but resisted the urge to go straight to bed to come out in front of my hotel for a quick dinner at a cafe, which to me signals the end of that bleary in-transit state of travel....My hotel was located on the Piazza della Rotonda, directly in front of the Pantheon (thanks to pebs suggesting a good area for my base!).
The atmosphere was fab, and there were lots of folks dining alone at the cafe so it felt very comfortable....anyway, i was going back through my archives and this picture really took me back to that night....some good mental travel on a rainy winter's day...
