Have a lovely day, everyone...

Holi people chilling out in their hut (Benin)

The Holi people, belong to a subgroup of the Yoruba ethnic community. They live in southeastern Benin and have a population of about 100,000.

One of the most notable aspects of Holi culture is their body art, which includes tattoos and scarifications. Women traditionally decorated their bellies with tattoos, believed to offer protection during pregnancy.

These body modifications also played an important role in their history. During the time of the slave trade, Europeans viewed individuals without scarifications as unmarked and desirable. Consequently, the Holi's distinct scarifications helped protect them from being captured.

The Holi build their homes from bamboo, designing them with a characteristic square layout.

Singapore Botanic Gardens / National Orchid Garden

The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a 160-year-old tropical garden located at the fringe of Singapore's Orchard Road shopping district. It is one of only three gardens, and the only tropical garden, to be honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Botanic Gardens has been ranked Asia's top park attraction since 2013, by TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards. It was declared the inaugural Garden of the Year, International Garden Tourism Awards in 2012, and received Michelin's three-star rating in 2008.

The Botanic Gardens was founded at its present site in 1859 by an agri-horticultural society. It played a pivotal role in the region's rubber trade boom in the early twentieth century, when its first scientific director Henry Nicholas Ridley, headed research into the plant's cultivation. By perfecting the technique of rubber extraction, still in use today, and promoting its economic value to planters in the region, rubber output expanded rapidly. At its height in the 1920s, the Malayan peninsula cornered half of the global latex production.

The National Orchid Garden, within the main gardens, is at the forefront of orchid studies and a pioneer in the cultivation of hybrids, complementing the nation's status as a major exporter of cut orchids. Aided by the equatorial climate, it houses the largest orchid collection of 1,200 species and 2,000 hybrids.

Early in the nation's independence, Singapore Botanic Gardens' expertise helped to transform the island into a tropical Garden City, an image for which the nation is widely known. In 1981, the hybrid climbing orchid, Vanda Miss Joaquim, was chosen as the nation's national flower. Singapore's "orchid diplomacy" honours visiting head of states, dignitaries and celebrities, by naming its finest hybrids after them; these are displayed at its popular VIP Orchid Gardens.

The Singapore's Botanic Gardens is open from 5 a.m. to 12 midnight daily. There is no admission fee, except for the National Orchid Garden. More than 10,000 species of flora is spread over its 82-hectares area, which is stretched vertically; the longest distance between the northern and southern ends is 2.5 km (1.6 mi). The Botanic Gardens receives about 4.5 million visitors annually.

National Orchid Garden, Singapore

The National Orchid Garden, located within the Singapore Botanic Gardens, was opened on 20 October 1995 by Singapore's Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens has been developed along a 3-Core Concept. The three Cores consist of Tanglin, which is the heritage core that retains the old favourites and rustic charms of the historic Gardens; Central, which is the tourist belt of the Gardens; and Bukit Timah, which is the educational and recreational zone. Each Core offers an array of attractions.

The National Orchid Garden is located in the Central Core of the gardens.

The Garden is located on the highest hill in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Providing a place for 60,000 orchid plants - consisting of 1000 species and more than 2,000 hybrids - is the three hectares of carefully landscaped slopes.

The design concept presenting the display of plants in four separate colour zones: the spring zone with its prevailing colours of bright and lively shades of gold, yellow and creams; the summer zone with its major tones of strong reds and pinks; the autumn zone of matured shades; and the winter zone of whites and cool blues. A careful combination of selected trees, shrubs, herbs and orchids (mostly hybrids) with matching foliage and floral colours depicts the colour combination.

Now devoid of their cab end branding, in anticipation of their withdrawal from service on 7th December 2024, Avanti West Coast Class 221 Super Voyager DMUs 221106 and 221102 approach Rugeley Trent Valley working service 1A38 12.32 Chester to London Euston.

For over 20 years the Voyager fleet have plied their trade along the west coast main line between London Euston and Scotland, North Wales and Birmingham. The Birmingham and Scotland diagrams have now all transferred over to Pendolino traction leaving just the North Wales routes being worked jointly by the remaining Voyager fleet and the new Class 805 Hiatchi Everos but alas this is now ending.

Cross Country Trains already have 3 of the ex Avanti Voyagers in their fleet with further examples to transfer. The remaining members of the fleet will go off lease and undoubtedly end up going for storage until (and if) a new role is found for them.

A large statue of ban Josip Jelačić on a horse, created by Austrian sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn was installed on October 19, 1866 by Austrian authorities, despite protests from Zagreb councilmen.[citation needed] It also caused unease amongst Hungarians, who see Jelacic as a traitor.

A horsecar line passing through the square's southern side was introduced in 1891. In 1910–11 horses were replaced by electric trams.

In 1946, the square was renamed Trg Republike (Republic Square). Jelačić's statue was removed in 1947 as the new Communist government of Yugoslavia denounced him as a "servant of foreign interests". Antun Bauer, a curator of the Gliptoteka gallery, kept it in the gallery cellar.

After World War II, car traffic through the square intensified. In 1975, the square became a car-free zone.

On October 11, 1990, during the breakup of Yugoslavia and after 1990 elections in Croatia, and Jelačić's historic role has again been considered positive and the statue was returned to the square but on the north portion facing the south. The name of the square has again been changed to his second name, after Josip Jelačić.

Fort Frederick Martello Tower (1846) is part of the Kingston Fortifications, which is an inter-related defense system located in and around the Kingston Harbour area in Ontario, Canada. A historically strategic site, situated at the mouth of the Cataraqui River, and overlooking the confluence of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Construction of the fortifications began with the outbreak of the War of 1812 (a military conflict between Canada, a colony of Great Britain, and the United States) and, when several simple defensive works were hurriedly built around the harbour, including blockhouses at Point Henry, Point Frederick and Murney Point.

Following the war, Kingston evolved into a major commercial, political, naval and military centre in the colony of Upper Canada. In 1832, the Rideau Canal linking Kingston to Montreal was completed, thereby increasing the town’s role as a naval transportation hub. To protect the southern terminus of the canal, the British began to fortify the harbour with the construction of Fort Henry, situated atop Point Henry. The rehabilitation of Fort Frederick, and the construction of Martello towers including the Shoal Tower, Fort Frederick Tower, and Cedar Island Cathcart Tower was conducted in the mid-1840s. The Point Murney Tower was constructed in 1846 as part of the new naval defences during the Oregon Crisis of 1845-1846 over a Canada-US boundary dispute. These fortifications, along with the former Market Battery, were designed to provide the town, the canal, and the dockyards with a more comprehensive defensive system. Frederick Point is also the location of the Royal Military College of Canada established in 1874.

The Kingston Fortifications National Historic Site of Canada was commemorated as a national historic site in 1989.

************

CLUN CASTLE IS A RUINED CASTLE ORIGINALLY ESTABLISHED BY THE NORMAN LORD ROBERT DE SAY AFTER THE NORMAN INVASION.

THE REMAINS OF THE 80 FT (24 M) TALL, FOUR-STOREY RECTANGULAR GREAT KEEP ARE STILL STANDING ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE MOTTE. IN LARGE PART THIS A TYPICAL LATE NORMAN KEEP, 68 BY 42 FT (21 BY 13 M) WIDE, SIMILAR TO THOSE LOCALLY AT ALBERBURY, BRIDGNORTH

OWNED FOR MANY YEARS BY THE FITZALAN FAMILY, CLUN PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN PROTECTING THE REGION FROM WELSH ATTACK UNTIL IT WAS EVENTUALLY ABANDONED AS A PROPERTY IN FAVOUR OF THE MORE LUXURIOUS ARUNDEL CASTLE. THE FITZALANS CONVERTED CLUN CASTLE INTO A HUNTING LODGE IN THE 14TH CENTURY, COMPLETE WITH PLEASURE GARDENS, BUT BY THE 16TH CENTURY THE CASTLE WAS LARGELY RUINED. SLIGHTED IN 1646 AFTER THE ENGLISH CIVIL WAR CLUN REMAINED IN POOR CONDITION UNTIL RENOVATION WORK IN THE 1890S.

TODAY THE CASTLE IS OWNED BY THE DUKE OF NORFOLK, WHO ALSO HOLDS THE TITLE OF BARON CLUN.

By slipping through a small space between buildings, I got off the main road of scenic to photograph buildings almost no one ever does.

The last time my lens captured this pair on the coast, they were working the GBRf 'Four To The Sea' staff special from Cardiff to Llandudno on 27 July 2013.

Back then, 20189 was in a red London Transport livery, 20142 carried standard BR blue.

They've swapped! Well, sort of, 20189 now carries the blue, 20142 in a lined maroon real genuine-ish London Transport garb.

The first of three railtours to Llandudno on Saturday 30 April 2022 is 1Z20 from Tyseley Warwick Road, the Vintage Trains North Wales Coast Express.

The class 20's were making a proper racket as they storm through Rhyl, recreating happy memories of the late 1980's/early 1990's Derby-Llandudno, a regular turn for the class.

So like the scatter brained person I am, instead of developing one of the half finished areas all around the city, i went and started another new one today!

This unnamed financial institution in ruins has been another long time build I've always wanted to make and I'm really happy to get around to building it. I really like the idea that during all the chaos of the viral outbreak, something as important as a bank just gives up and things like money looses all value as people try to survive.

It's still in a rough form but the vault turned out great and I was excited to share it with you guys. When the bank is done It'll be another awesome place to explore and RP in!

Merlin Mk3 is a new aircraft type for the Commando Helicopter Force (CHF). It will advance capability for the primary customer, The Royal Marines.

To take on the demanding Commando Role (from ship to shore operations) the current Merlin Mk3 fleet will undergo an upgrade package through an interim model. It will then move towards the advanced Merlin Mk4.

This will further increase the capability of this proven battlefield helicopter.
