From the archives: Battersea Powerstation back when the first of the new developments around it were set up.
A bit of a la-di-dah name for a project that should have been the revival of Derby but instead has been a vast disappointment (IMO) anyway here’s the corner of the building that houses a hotel and a casino.

I was passing through London a few weeks ago, and had a couple of hours spare, so popped down to the Thames to see how the Battersea development was getting on. This is the Riverlight Quay apartment complex, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners.
The Riverlight development in South West London, back in the day when it was still under construction.
In late 1987 a fleet of open OB wagons stored at Wallaroo were cleaned and returned to traffic for use during the upcoming harvest. as it turned out ultimately they only saw limited use on South Australian grain trains during 1988, the year the grain fleet transitioned to 100% covered hoppers.
Several trips were required to move all the hoppers from Wallaroo to Port Adelaide and broad gauge ALCo DL531 branchliners 838/833 were the motive power.
On 3 November 1987, they are seen crossing the River Light at Hamley Bridge with shunt loco #504 dead attached. It had been based at Wallaroo for local shunt moves there related to the cleaning of the OBs prior to reactivation.

First night in the Yukon, first Northern lights of the trip. Definitely not the last. There’s something magical about those dancing lights in the sky - we really do miss out in the south.

I liked what the otherwise MEH sky was doing from this side. There is also another river lighthouse across and downriver from this one. Not sure how many there were at the height of river travel, but I am going to look into it.
The River Lights on the St Jospeph River, South Bend, Indiana. The water was dead calm under the bridge - hence the great reflection.

An hour's drive, three ferry crossings, enough potholes to bury the CN Tower (three times), and $5 to enter a private campground where the lighthouse is situated, and here we were. Ironically, if we could have driven straight there, we would have arrived in about 20 minutes. The light didn't disappoint, though. It's one of the river lights historically situated on the St. John River here in Southern New Brunswick, Canada. All told, on the day, we did 5 ferry river crossings (one of them twice) on a fun Sunday. The New Brunswick ferries are free to ride, as I suppose it saves the province from building and maintaining bridges. This location, Oak Point, juts out into the St. John River, across from the Kingston Peninsula. It's been on my radar since I first saw it on Google Maps. Oh, we also crossed one, one lane covered bridge that I have shot before.

On 12 January 1995, Australian National broad gauge locomotives, 843/CK2/844, head across the River Light near Hamley Bridge, South Australia, with grain loading from Balaklava bound ultimately for Victoria. Post privatisation 843 remained on broad gauge with GWA until placed in storage in 2014, CK2 was rebuilt and is now on standard gauge owned by SCT (as T404), while 844 ended up working on the narrow gauge iron ore lines at Whyalla with GWA, .

Taken during a wander round Nine Elms last Summer, this is one of the immediately recognisable 'Pompidou-esque' vents of the Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners 'Riverlight Quay' development.
As someone that has spent about 35 years photographing Richard Rogers iconic buildings I was sad to hear that he died just before Christmas. His most famous works such as the Pompidou and Lloyds of London will ensure his name lives on.
I'm thinking later this Spring I might well organise a London Flickr Group Photowalk around the area. If that's something that might be of interest then join the group and keep an eye on the discussions. You can find us here : www.flickr.com/groups/londonflickrgroup/

From the Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners website, "Riverlight transforms a triangular, five-acre industrial estate – close to Battersea Power Station on the south bank of the River Thames – into a residential-led mixed use development, creating a transition between the large footprints of the power station and the smaller residential developments to the east.
The scheme includes 813 homes, underground parking, crèche, restaurants, bars, a food store and other retail spaces. It incorporates a river walk and landscaping to take full advantage of its location and create attractive public spaces for the local community. The development is made up of six buildings, arranged in a rising-form composition, ranging in height from 12 to 20 storeys and giving the development a varied skyline. Around 60 per cent of the scheme is designated as public open space."

20 years of CityCat
Transdev has proudly operated CityCat and CityFerry services on the Brisbane River on behalf of Brisbane City Council from 2003 to 2020.
The first CityCat services were introduced onto the river in 1996. Since then we have helped to grow the ferry network from just 6 catamaran vessels (CityCat) to 21 in 2019. Several new terminals and routes were introduced during this time, with the service proving popular with residents and visitors alike.

The CityCats are named after indigenous place names around the Brisbane River, with the exceptions of Neville Bonner for the late indigenous politician and the Spirit of Brisbane that was named following the devastating 2011 Brisbane Floods.

Noosa Ferry, Noosa River, Queensland
The Noosa Ferry Cruise company built two low-draft wooden boats c1998 and named them after the original ferry boats on the Noosa River. One was ‘Riverlight’ named after the Massoud family’s boat built in 1915 and the other was ‘Miss Tewantin’, the Parkyn family’s boat built in 1923.

Another shot taken during last months London Flickr Photowalk round Battersea and Nine Elms, this is a detail of 'Skystation' by Peter Newman. It's one of a number of public artworks installed in the landscaped gardens around the Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners designed Riverlight Quay development in Nine Elms.

From the Riverlight Art Map, "Skystation is an interactive public sculpture, inspired by Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand’s LC4 chaiselongue, that also acts as a piece of public seating. The contours of the work are designed to fit the reclining human form and encourage contemplation of the vast expanse of space above. An object to be both observed and used, Skystation has the incidental effect of bringing its users’ heads into close proximity, thereby making conversation between strangers almost inevitable.
In the best tradition of British street furniture, it has a commemorative plaque, which reads ‘In Loving Memory Of Those Yet To Be Born’. For almost twenty years Peter Newman has been making photographs, sculptures, paintings and video installations that address a human relationship to space and modernity. From individual to collective means to describe, traverse and connect. The city is seen as a primary instrument of communication and a reflection of creative intent."
