The name of the place (Yushima Seidō - 湯島聖堂 with Japanese kanji) actually just means 'the sacred hall in Yushima'. It was built in this spot in 1690 (there was an earlier temple, founded in 1639, built in what is now Ueno Park, but the shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi moved it here). The temple was closely associated with the Shōhei-zaka Gakumonjo school of Neo-Confucianism, state-run from 1797 to the Meiji restoration of 1871. After 1871 the temple has shared its grounds with several educational institutions (and the Ministry of Education, and the Tokyo National Museum) - currently you can find parts of the Tokyo Medical and Dental University in the vicinity, and the school's emblem of a plum blossom is said to derive from the temple. Students praying for success in their exams come to visit here.
The temple itself is now made of concrete - the original was built in wood, but destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 (just a year after the temple had been designated a national historical site). The current building dates to 1935, and was designed by Itō Chūta (伊東忠太, 1867-1954, architect and architectural historian and theorist).

The walls of the Baroque cathedral St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta, Malta, are something quite extra. The church was first built 1573-78, after a design by Girolamo Cassar, born in Malta, but got its current looks in the century after. It was the main church of worship for the knights of St John (who dominated the island in the 17th and 18th centuries).
If you are wondering what a co-cathedral is, that is what you get when you are in a diocese that already has a cathedral (in Mdina), but thinks another church is just as a grand and important (if not more so). So the bishop can use it as an alternative cathedral. This solution dates to 1820s, when the knights had left. Initially the cathedral was called Chiesa Conventuale di San Giovanni Battista (yes, it had an Italian name - in English that is Conventual Church of St. John)

Xàtiva is a city in the Spanish province of Valencia and is the birthplace of two popes. Xàtiva is the Valencian name for this city, but in Castellano this city is called 'Jativa'. This city is located in a beautiful area of hills, vineyards, orange groves and cypress trees on the northern slopes of Monte Vernissa, a two-peaked hill topped by the castle of Xativa. This castle consists of a double fortification divided between the older "Castillo Menor" small castle, built on the Iberian and Roman remains of the site, and the more recent "Castillo Mayor" main castle, built during the Middle Ages. It is located at an altitude of 310 meters above the modern city. The walls mainly date from the period during the Arab occupation. The fortress is strategically located on the ancient Via Augusta road that leads from Rome over the Pyrenees and along the Mediterranean coast to Cartagena and Cádiz. Although the town has expanded in recent years, there are still many old quarters and beautiful medieval monuments to be found. It really is such a small town that you can enjoy as a Spain lover!
One of the most beautiful towns in Spain, Xàtiva is defined by its delicious gastronomy, fascinating history and beautiful naturescapes. The Xàtiva castle is divided into two zones, the so-called Castillo Menor and Castillo Mayor. While the first is pre-Roman, Iberian and Carthaginian, the second is a Latin foundation. The importance of the Xativa Castle lies in its strategic location, being near the Via Augusta, the Roman road crossing all of Hispania Province from Cadiz via Cartagena, on the Mediterranean coast, through the Pyrenees and ending in Rome. The castle therefore had the function of monitoring and protecting the Roman road. Currently, the Castle is a site of Valencian heritage and is managed by the city of Xativa.

Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are mostly black and white with boldly patterned faces. Both sexes have red foreheads, and males also have red throats. Look for a long white stripe along the folded wing. Bold black-and-white stripes curve from the face toward a black chest shield and white or yellowish underparts.

The platinum color represents the Queen's 70 years on the throne, and the purple color symbolizes royalty. The gold is mined from the golden wattle, the national floral emblem of Australia. The font used is perpetual, meaning "forever", which acknowledges that the Queen was Australia's "first platinum monarch".

First Year Male Black-throated Green Warbler.
Active and agile, Black-throated Green Warblers primarily forage for small insects hiding in the bases of the leaves of tall trees. Breeding males sing on exposed perches where their bright head is conspicuous. In fall migration and winter, they often join mixed-species flocks with resident birds.

Red Knots are plump, neatly proportioned sandpipers that in summer sport brilliant terracotta-orange underparts and intricate gold, buff, rufous, and black upperparts. This cosmopolitan species occurs on all continents except Antarctica and migrates exceptionally long distances, from High Arctic nesting areas to wintering spots in southern South America, Africa, and Australia. Red Knots from eastern North America have declined sharply in recent decades owing in part to unsustainable harvest of horseshoe crab eggs, and they have become a flagship species for shorebird conservation in the twenty-first century.

This stone monument is the so called Havängsdösen - Haväng being the place (lit. sea meadow) and dös meaning dolmen. This Neolithic burial was made by people of the of the Funnelbeaker culture and is believed to date to around 3500 B.C. The dolmen itself is made out of 4 stones (3 sides and one as roof) with the opening towards the sea and the east. The grave is then surrounded by additional stones, fencing an area of some 60 square metres. The dolmen was excavated in 1869 - then a skeleton and a flint axe was found. Some believe that this is a sign of plundering of the grave, but burials of this type often don't display much grave-goods.

Look carefully at a bare, brown field, especially in winter, and you may be surprised to see it crawling with little brown shapes. When they turn, you may see a neat yellow face, black mask, and tiny black “horns” waving in the breeze. Horned Larks are widespread songbirds of fields, deserts, and tundra, where they forage for seeds and insects, and sing a high, tinkling song. Though they are still common, they have undergone a sharp decline in the last half-century.

Street photography from Glasgow, Scotland.
Captured in September 2019 during an exercise I gave to my Street Photography Workshop for them to look for different angles and perspectives as we walked around. Of course I ensured that the person begging in the shot was suitably anonymised so that the image is for narrative and is not in any way exploitative.
I'm thinking of the millions of people currently displaced across Ukraine. Over 2 million displaced out of the country but countless millions more ran out of their homes to another part of the country, all while being under artillery and rocket fire. I cannot begin to imagine the depths of pain, despair and loss that they are feeling.
I'm also thinking of those displaced and homeless throughout the United Kingdom as a result of poverty driven by the cost of living crisis and Government policy over the past decade. My own energy prices have risen 129% overnight.
I'm also thinking of those displaced out of their homes, steadings and traditional nomadic routes in Ethiopia right now. Years and years of lower than average rainfall are now leading to a famine of the levels not seen since 1985. The building humanitarian disaster is expected to be worse than that thanks, in no small part, to the climate emergency.
We all need water, food and shelter - these basics that are essential for life should be a given in our modern world.
Today I am thinking of those who have been or are being displaced from their homes. I wish I could help more.

Looking out of the main building, the Honkan, of the Tokyo National Museum. This was built 1932-1938 after the design of Jin Watanabe - replacing an older building (by the British architect Josiah Conder) that was damaged by the Great Kanto earthquake in 1923, which devastated much of Tokyo.
This garden is closed to the public most days - but you can get a quite good look from the windows (hence the light patch in the upper right corner).

LET MY SPIRIT SOAR
My thoughts fly up like birds in the sky.
I am free. I can fly.
I go everywhere. I see everything.
Towering mountian ranges
And a tiny flower growiing in the desert.
I see cities and highways and a fallen tree
I see a grandmother telling a story to a child.
I sit quitely
but my thoughts fly up like birds in the sky.
Only I know where they go.
