My father's eldest brother, joined the RFC, Royal Flying Corps, in Sept 1917 stating he was almost 18 years of age, in fact he was 16 at that time. On the 25th November 1917 his medical states 'fit as pilot', and nine days after his birthday 30th Nov 1917 he was sent to the 85th Squadron to train as a pilot, they thought he was now 18. By February 1918 they found out he was only 17 so it appears they sent him home. I haven't found information to confirm that he gained his wings. It appears he was at the training school from Nov 1917 to January 1918.

This is where I find it difficult to grasp how fast flight has developed since I was born... Here, in his "Royal Flying Corps" uniform is my Grandad Stanley Moss during the first World War - Sopwith Camels would have been later I guess - he certainly worked with planes that had to be started by spinning the prop by hand - NOT GOOD if you slipped on the grass runway just as the motor spluttered to life!

It's my sad duty to report the passing of John Head last week. A regular on the London to Brighton and Max Caff. A Great character who will be missed! RIP John.

Montrose Air Station in Scotland was Britain's First Ever Operational Military Airbase. It was established on the 26th Feb 1913. It was also used in WWII and post war. It closed for good in 1952. The RAF is the oldest independent air force in the world. It was formed on 1 April 1918 when the RFC (Royal Flying Corps) and the (RNAS) Royal Naval Air Service merged to form the RAF. The station It is now a Museum and I can recommend a visit!
