Chelsham garage worked the 485 route from Westerham to Edenbridge which was withdrawn in the late 1970s. On an early spring day RF 542 (CM) is at the Westerham (old station) terminus, the location of which was the end of the Southern Railway branch line from Dunton Green. Wednesday 10th April 1974. M5.

Viewed from the window of our hotel in Llandudno. In the morning we woke up to find a penalty notice on the bus for leaving it without lights. It was the cheaper option compared to calling someone out to jump start as the batteries would have gone flat overnight with lights on.

In revised Green Line livery, RF 175 picks up custom in St Vincents Road, Dartford. Worked by vehicles from Dartford (DT) garage, the 486 penetrated deep into red bus territory. Thursday 31st January 1975. 2F-12.

In deepest darkest Surrey, Dorking's RFs operated the sparsely trafficked route 412. RF 255 (DS) waits under the trees at Sutton 'Volunteer' (a hamlet near Holmbury St Mary), in readiness for the return run to Dorking station. Monday 25th June 1973. F-7.

GRUMMAN F9F-8P (RF-9J) COUGAR

Even before the Panther entered service the Navy and Grumman were examining the possibility of creating a swept-wing version of the aircraft.

While the Cougar retained the F9F designation of the earlier Panther it was in reality an almost entirely new design bearing only a superficial resemblance to its predecessor.

Initially seen as an interim design, the Cougar turned out to be very adaptable and several versions and modifications were made over its lifetime. One of the more important of these is the photo reconnaissance version, the F9F-8P. This version incorporated a much larger nose housing several cameras and a fixed position refueling probe.

Eventually nearly 2,000 Cougars of all types were built and some remained is service as late as 1974. This aircraft was delivered to the U.S. Navy on June 25, 1957, and was the last F9F-8P built. It was loaned to the Pima Air Museum by the National Museum of Naval Aviation in 1969.
