Caption: A restorative circle meeting in progress, bringing people together to listen and get their voice heard (a staged image).
Sitting in a circle is one way to have a restorative meeting. Everyone in the circle has time to speak and to get what they need from the meeting, while feeling supported by those who are there for them. Circles are also often used when there is more than one person harmed or more than one person responsible – or for more community involvement or supporters to take part.
* Restorative justice can take place between a person who has experienced harm and the person who has caused that harm. But it can also be used to address secondary harm caused by organisations or systems, conflict experienced across a community group and/or circles of those who have experienced similar types of harm. This is often referred to as ‘restorative practice’ or a ‘restorative approach’.
Background:
Restorative justice is a voluntary process of supported contact between a person who has caused harm and someone who has experienced harm. Where appropriate, this can also include their families and supporters.
Restorative justice does not always occur between a person who has experienced harm and/or a person who has caused that harm. It can also be used to address secondary harm caused by organisations or systems, conflict experienced across a community group and/or circles of those who have experienced similar types of harm. This is often referred to as ‘restorative practice’ or a ‘restorative approach’.
Restorative justice takes many forms, based on what is best for the parties involved, their needs and their continued safety. This is explored through the planning, preparation stages and continued risk assessment. Approaches include face-to-face conferences or meetings, letter-writing, video conferencing, ‘shuttle dialogue’ and healing circles.
Restorative justice has many evidence-based benefits for those who have experienced harm and also those who have caused harm, their families and communities. These can include being given a choice, empowerment, recovery, improved wellbeing and the process can also help prevent people from causing further harm.
Restorative Justice in Scotland:
It’s a voluntary and consent-based process in Scotland and any party can discontinue their engagement in the process at any point without losing support from services in place, to ensure trauma-informed practice continues.
Restorative justice can be considered by adults, children and young people in Scotland in a way which is responsive to trauma and takes a rights-based approach.
Research shows people in Scotland want the option of exploring restorative justice across a range of crime types, including those considered serious and sensitive in nature. This does not mean it will always go ahead, but even the choice is found to be empowering.
Restorative justice operates in parallel to the criminal justice and youth justice systems in Scotland and is never used an alternative to this. Outcomes achieved and/or agreed through restorative justice have no impact on any decisions taken throughout the criminal justice process.

Just a closer look at the column capital at the Rotunda. Anybody remember what order this is? What it might symbolize to society at the time?

If you compare this Pavilion to Pavilion VIII, you'll notice that these columns are larger - a "Great Order" - which is typical of the majority of the pavilions along the Lawn. So there are two kinds of hierarchy evident. First, the hierarchy of the location, with the Rotunda at the head of the space (and higher up, though I don't think that is evident in these images). Then, secondly, a hierarchy set with scale, with the larger columns suggesting something more important is found there than where you find the smaller columns - reflecting a time when the teacher was thought to be more important than the students!

The garden is smelling nice now.
Lavender has a connection to witch-craft and sorcery. Lavender was believed by the Tuscans to counteract the evil eye.
Taken orally, lavender oil was credited with being a restorative and tonic against faintness, palpatations of a nervous sort, weak giddiness, spasms and colic. It was used to increase appetite, raise the spirits and dispel flatulence. It was also used for hysteria, palsy and similar disorders and acted as a powerful stimulant.
Gerard, author of Herball or Historie of Plants(1597), mentions using distilled water from the lavender flowers or oil made from the flowers and olive oil to treat palsy with the statement that doing so will "profiteth them much."
Macerating the oils of lavender and rosemary, with cinnamon bark, nutmeg, and red sandal wood in wine for seven days produces tincture of red lavender which was once a popular medicinal cordial. "Palsy Drops", a once well-known compound, was made from lavender with rosemary, cinnamon, nutmeg, red sandal wood, and spirits.
Rubbing a few drops of lavender oil on the temples is said to cure nervous headaches. Tea brewed from lavender flowers was often prescribed as a treatment for headaches from fatigue or weakness.
One early British work mentions that the lions and tigers in the Zoological gardens "powerfully affected by the smell of lavender water and become docile under its influence."
Researchers are finding many of the medicinal attributes that have been paired with lavender throughout the centuries to be valid. Essential lavender oil has been scientifically found to be a powerful antiseptic that can kill typhoid, diphtheria, streptococcus, and pneumococus bacteria. And it is actually an effective antidote for some snake venoms.
The antiseptic powers of lavender were well known and bundles of the dried herb would be burnt and left to smolder as a fumigant in a sickroom. (No date was given for this practice but the original source implies that the practice continues in the present day.)
Most of the remaining of the earlier medical uses lavender and lavender oil also appear to be founded upon fact with perhaps the notable exception of it being protection against the evil eye - that remains unproven.
Green elements are a striking part of the eco-restorative* design of the Robertson Building. The building owner has shown leadership both locally and nationally by supporting green projects that provide environmental and health benefits to private and public interests. In March 2004, a 250 square foot living-breathing plant wall (bio-wall) was installed in the lobby of the Robertson building. The bio-wall was designed by Air Quality Solutions Ltd. and is composed of several varieties of native and exotic green and flowering plants. The plant species were selected for their ability to reduce indoor air contaminants generated from common causes of building off-gassing and from the steady flow of traffic on Spadina Avenue.
In June 2004, a 4,000 square foot, extensive green roof was installed over half of the Robertson roof. The green roof was designed and installed by Gardens in the Sky, Perennial Gardens Inc. The green roof is supported by five inches of organic, light-weight planting media and a host of native plant species that are thriving in this elevated ecosystem. To complement the green roof, a greenhouse and cedar viewing deck were installed so that tenants and special guests can enjoy a spectacular skyline view of the city as well as proximity to typical green roof biodiversity in this environment. The extensive green roof provides several other important environmental benefits to Toronto including: a habitat for birds, insects and other plant species; a micro-climate that reduces urban heat island effect; the retention of storm water when it rains preventing sewer overflow into Lake Ontario; the reduction of air pollutants by trapping and degrading contaminants; and protection of the roof membrane from harsh temperature changes giving greater longevity to a conventional roof.
