All those stems that look like straw are the dead phragmites. They were pretty much the only solid ground out there. *squish*
The light colored temporary braces were installed in 2005. These were to stabilize the Steeple because the Mortise and Tenons were removed in a 1940's restoration. Here we can see where connecting Girt has had over 8 inches removed.
