Exploring the historic Wentworth Woodhouse estate, Tuesday 30th March 2021.

Used in many films and TV series, though sadly currently encased in scaffolding, Wentworth Woodhouse is the largest private home in the UK and has the longest facade of any country house in Europe at over 600 feet - it is twice as long as Buckingham Palace! It has over 350 rooms although no one seems sure exactly how many! Apparently in its heyday servants were specifically employed there to light candles, while guests were given confetti to scatter behind them before dinner, so that afterwards they would find their way back through the five miles of corridor! The wings that aren’t encased in scaffolding are as big as some stately homes!

Wentworth Woodhouse was built 1730-60 and was home to the Fitzwilliam family. The 10th Earl died in 1979 with no heirs - the National Trust weren’t interested and after several different uses over the years It was bought by the Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust in March 2017. It is now undergoing a 20 year multi-million pound restoration.
