We had some time to kill so we stopped by this great little park that resides in Colorado Springs. It had been raining on and off for the better part of the day and after resolving ourself to a night in the car so we spent the rest of the day exploring. As well as an amazing geological spectacle, it has a fascinating history that spans back eons.
The human history of the Garden of the Gods commences many centuries before our present time. Stone hearths and fire rings found in the Garden dating over 3000 years ago indicate the presence of early inhabitants, According to Ute traditions, their people have always lived in this area, and were known to winter in the Garden of the Gods.
It's no wonder they were drawn to this magical place.

Saw this magnificent grey wolf residing at the time I took this photo at the Alaskan Wildlife Conversation Center, in Alaska obvs. It's the closest I've been to a wolf in the wild and even from a distance they looked proud and intelligent and amazing.
The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, education, research and quality animal care.
I don't want to alarm you, but some people close to me say that once a month, on the full moon, I look a bit like this. (That's the Halloween scary bit for those in parts of the world that celebrate it ;)
In this large sea cave, a colony of Steller sea lions permanently resides and California sea lions also winter here. Waves from the open sea continually come splashing into the cave. The sea lions spend time here hauled out on rocks to rest and find shelter from winter storms. Many birds also inhabit the cave system.
An elevator has been built to take visitors down into the cave, where a single, carefully fenced-off viewpoint allows this incredible glimpse into another world! It is totally magical!
Between the crashing waves and the constant barking of the sea lions, the sound was deafening in this echoing cavern, and so whatever sound came from the human visitors was completely drowned out and became irrelevant. I was glad to come away with the impression that the wild sea lions really didn't seem bothered by the tourism activity.

ABOUT THIS PHOTO:
Partly out of fear to bore the Flickr community with too many lizard photos, I thought it would make for a nice change - yet in keeping with the main theme of my gallery - to give interested nature and reptile fans the opportunity to get a sense of the lacerta bilineata habitat where I photographed all the animals on this page.
So this is the second of a (as yet planned) series of pictures (if people like them there will be more) that will show you where all the reptile "action" took place: my garden in the beautiful community of Monteggio in the Malcantone region of the Ticino, Switzerland.
The pictures were taken over a period of over a decade, so there were obviously some changes in the garden during that time, but If you focus on the palm tree - which has grown considerably over the years but is visible in all the photos I plan to upload - you get a sense of the geography of the place.
In summer, which is when this photo was taken, the micro-climate in this particular area of the Ticino can be almost tropical in the sense that it's hot and very humid with frequent thunderstorms and heavy rain, and I often refer to my garden (half-)jokingly as my "little Swiss rainforest". I guess you can see how animals - particularly lacerta bilineata and other lizards - would feel at home in this "tropical paradise" of mine :-)
Apparently - as I learned in the comments here on Flickr - the occurrence of this particular lizard species is a very good indicator that an ecosystem is intact, and my family and I always took great care not to interfere too much in our garden and let nature roam as free as possible.
In return, over the years we were rewarded for this "calculated inaction" with a wide variety of species of plants, insects, lizards and snakes visiting - or by now residing permanently in - our little nature refuge, some of which I managed to capture on camera.
As mentioned before, if people like these photos or are interested in other flora and fauna from my private jungle, I'll upload one every once in a while between lizards, so let me know in the comments if you're interested in seeing more of these or if I should stick to just reptiles ;-)
As always, thank you so much for your interest and feedback, stay safe - and have a great week everyone!

Inuksuit (the plural of Inuksuk) serve in a spiritual capacity to indicate a place where life is renewed or where spirits reside; where judgements or decisions are made or where celebrations and festivals are held. Traditionally, they were used by the Inuit in the north as directional markers. An Inukshuk in the shape of a person signifies safety, hope and friendship. These stone sculptures were also important for navigation, as a point of reference, as a marker for hunting grounds, or to denote a food cache.
~ We can observe the Black Tusk too here : The Black Tusk is a stratovolcano and a pinnacle of volcanic rock in Garibaldi Provincial Park of British Columbia, Canada. At 2,319 m above sea level, the upper spire is visible from a great distance in all directions.

The beauty of Colorado Provençal lies in the fact that the site was created both by nature and by men: the ocher trees.
In Rustrel, mining began at the end of the 19th century. The ocriers then tore open the earth to tear off the precious pigments declining a thousand colors and giving birth to landscapes with fantastic shapes.

Europe
The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is a species of eagle-owl that resides in much of Eurasia. It is abbreviated to just the eagle-owl in Europe It is one of the largest species of owl, and females can grow to a total length of 75 cm (30 in), with a wingspan of 188 cm (6 ft 2 in), with males being slightly smaller. This bird has distinctive ear tufts. The orange eyes are distinctive.
Eurasian eagle-owls are found in many habitats, but are mostly birds of mountainous regions or other rocky areas, often those near varied woodland edge and shrubby areas with openings or wetlands to hunt a majority of their prey. Additionally, they inhabit coniferous forests, steppes, and other areas at varied elevations that are typically relatively remote.
The eagle-owl is mostly a nocturnal predator, hunting for a range of different prey species. Predominantly, their diet is composed of small mammals such as rodents and rabbits, but they also prey on larger mammals and birds of varying sizes. Other secondary prey can include reptiles, amphibians, fish, large insects and other assorted invertebrates.
In addition to being one of the largest living species of owl, the Eurasian eagle-owl is also one of the most widely distributed. With a total range in Europe and Asia of about 32 million km2 (12 million sq mi) and a total population estimated to be between 250,000 and 2.5 million.
The IUCN lists the bird's conservation status as being of least concern. - Wikipedia.

Downy Woodpecker (female).
A sparrow-sized woodpecker at 6 inches in length. Black and white with the males only having a small red patch on the nape of the head. Similar to Hairy Woodpeckers but tamer and smaller and with a short stubby bill.
Its habitat includes woodlands, parks and gardens.
It resides from Alaska across Canada and south throughout the United States except the southwest.
Kensington Metropark, Livingston County, Michigan.
The Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris) resides at Circle B Bar Reserve from about January until April each winter. This little guy was munching on the seeds that are visible in the picture. The bush had no leaves but foreground twigs can be seen in his wing area. He measures only about 5 1/4 inches from beak-tip to tail-tip. Definitely one of the prettier birds we come across.

A waterbird and a member of the rail and Crake family, this is a large bird around 40-45 cms long and weighing half a kilo or more. They are quite large compared to the other waterbirds here, but they are so impossible to sight in the green fields where they reside. They are easily identified by the frontal red shield and calls.
The birds stick to the foot long grass in the countryside and hence very hard to spot - any sighting in our region is considered rare. I had sighted this bird many times, but just could manage a distant poor shot.
But y'day early morning, on an open riverside road surrounded by grass and fields, several males were calling out and flying from one side of the road to the other. I was lucky to be able to get some shots of the bird much to my satisfaction. This one is a male, the female is more brownish in color.

Alcázar of Seville is famous royal palace, which dates back to the 11th century, when resided here representatives of caliphate Cordoba. Expanded in the years 1350 to 1369 by Peter I Cruel in style Mudejar. Later kings continued expansion of adapting residence to suit your needs. Here Christopher Columbus was received by Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon after a trip to America.

Alkazar w Sewilli to sławny pałac królewski, którego początki sięgają XI w., kiedy rezydowali tutaj przedstawiciele kalifatu kordobańskiego. Rozbudowany w latach 1350-69 przez Piotra I Okrutnego w stylu mudejar. Późniejsi królowie kontynuowali rozbudowę, przystosowując rezydencję do własnych potrzeb. A few birds keep playing (and residing) on a tree right outside my window. This Myna us one of those. It gives me company all day as I keep working on my desk next to this window.
As I mentioned in the last post Bell Rock depicted here resides next to Courthouse Butte so this shot logically follows my last, speaking of logic have a gander at the people high up on this monument. While the grey day made for a great photos it also was on the verge of rain and these intrepid climbers seem oblivious to the fact that water makes for a bad climbing buddy. This 500+ foot climb is easy going up, so much so that people find themselves in predicaments on the way down they never intended while making the climb up.

The Amalienborg palace consists of four identical classical palace façades with rococo interiors around an octagonal courtyard (Danish: Amalienborg Slotsplads); in the centre of the square is a monumental equestrian statue of Amalienborg's founder, King Frederick V.
Amalienborg was originally built for four noble families; however, when Christiansborg Palace burned on 26 February 1794, the royal family bought the palaces and moved in. Over the years various monarchs and their families have resided in the four different palaces.

It was back in the early fifties when I remember first noticing it. It could have been around long before that, but that was my first memories of it. It sat on a small shelf on the wall in the kitchen near the gas stove. And it shared shelf space with a wooden match box holder, a little tin thing that left the striker on the box exposed so that you could light those matches with the white phosphorous tips. There were no pilot lights on the gas stoves at that time, or at least on our stove, so matches nearby were always needed. Very important if you wanted to make coffee in the little 2 cup drip pot that always found a home on top of one of the burners on the stove. And besides the wooden matches holder a small shot glass filled with toothpicks also resided. So, the little green pitcher always had some company as it rested on the shelf with it's two companions. I don't really know where Mom got it...a gift maybe?, or a purchase at a local 5 and dime store maybe?, and ours was Woolworth's in downtown Freeport, NY. I'm sure it had little monetary value, the label on the bottom simply said "Made In Czechoslovakia." But there it sat, and rare, if ever, was it used for the purpose of it's design, and never did it see a flower or two from Dad's garden. And other than maybe a special occasion when friends or relatives stopped by it might have been used to put milk in it for the coffee that was often served to guests. But, I have no direct recollection of that, for me it just always sat on that little shelf in the kitchen with the wooden matches holder and the shot glass filled with toothpicks. So now, some 70 plus years later I still have it, and I still have those memories of the little green pitcher that once sat in the house I grew up in. Now, however, it sits on a different shelf, and Catherine fills it with flowers from our gardens, but in my heart, and in my memories, it will always be sitting on that little kitchen shelf on the wall shared with it's two companions.
This pair of Egyptian Geese reside in my local park and usually produce a good clutch of eggs/goslings each year.
I heard that they'd brought the newly hatched goslings over from the nesting site on an island in the middle of the lake, to the area where visitors walk. This is a risky move as people enter the park with their dogs at this point (some not on a lead) and the male swan (we only have one pair) is very protective and territorial when his mate is currently sitting on her nest.
Sadly there were initially ten yesterday, but only seven on my count this morning.
I went to the park early hoping to find them. When I arrived Mum was keeping them all warm. Then 2 dogs arrived across the water inlet where they were and this disturbed them. Thankfully another visitor was feeding them with seeds so I got some good photos.

While many species of dove live in Florida, the mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) is the only dove species native to the state.
Many dove species that reside in Florida, while not native, are state and federally protected, including the common ground dove (Zenaida passerina), Inca dove (Columbina inca), Key West quail-dove (Geotrygon chrysie), ruddy quail-dove (Geotrygon Montana), scaly-naped pigeon (Columba squamosa), white-winged dove (Zenaida asiatica), white-crowned pigeon (Columbina leucocephala) and Zenaida dove (Zenaida aurita). There are also other species of dove residing in Florida that are not protected and considered exotics in the United States; examples include the diamond dove (Geopelia cuneate), ringed turtle dove (Streptopelia risoria), rock dove or common pigeon (Columba livia), and Eurasian collared or ring-necked dove (Streptopelia decaocto).
Mourning doves can be found throughout southern Canada, all of the U.S. and Central America, and most of the Caribbean Islands. Found throughout Florida, the greatest numbers of mourning doves appear to be in the central portion of the state. Florida populations increase during the winter months, when the resident population is supplemented by birds migrating in from the north. During the past 40 years, dove populations have remained relatively stable in the eastern U.S., with a 1% increase during the last 10 years. In Florida, dove populations increased by 2% during the past 40 years, but decreased slightly (2%) during the last 10 years. Throughout the U.S., the number of dove hunters and birds harvested annually has been declining. Hunting, which typically takes 10-15% of the fall population, does not appear to be a significant problem for doves or an important factor in population declines. The primary reason for declines in many dove populations is the loss and degradation of breeding and foraging habitat.
I found this one along Joe Overstreet Road in Osceola County, Florida.
