Boulders Beach, Simon's Town, Western Cape Province, South Africa

Explored 11 March 2016

In a sheltered bay of inlets just past Simon’s Town in South Africa’s Cape Peninsula live a colony of over 3,000 African Penguins. Also known as ‘jackass penguins’ for their donkey-like bray, these diminutive birds have a comical waddling gait. In November 2013, the African Penguin was listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, though the colony at Boulders’ Beach is in rude health. To me, this gang is reminiscent of the famous image of Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs.

Tomorrow night, in a titanic battle for roller derby supremacy, sailors will meet soldiers on the flat track. Until then, we're playing with our food.

...lots of characters in the streets of Alicante. The Pen F, with its handy articulated screen, seems well suited for this kind of candid.

Active Assignment for the week of July 17 - 23, 2006

Subject: Name that Movie

Wow, that was one hell of an assignment. What idiot had the idea for this assignment anyways? I was sitting on this for about 7 hours and during the shooting I could have also parcipitated in the "Sweat"-Assignment (wearing suit at 32 °C is not a good idea).

Take a look at the original. I tried to stay really close to it. This shadow nearly killed me...

Reservoir Dogs photo by Roy Mildor

When Alicia , aka Slightly Lively issued my Get Pushed challenge, there was only one choice for me to make. I remember when I first saw Reservoir Dogs in 1993. The opening scene had me hooked. Who was this director that could make eight guys walking down the street epic? I became an immediate Quentin Tarantino fan. Reservoir Dogs is not a film for the squeamish. During a screening of Reservoir Dogs in Barcelona, fifteen people walked out, including horror film director Wes Craven and special effects artist Rick Baker. Baker later told Tarantino to take the walk out as a "compliment" and explained that he found the violence unnerving because of its heightened sense of realism.

Alicia had challenged me to reproduce a scene from my favorite movie. Reservoir Dogs has many memorable scenes, but the one I chose was the iconic scene in the warehouse, of the Mexican standoff between Mr. White and Mr. Pink. I didn't have the wooden chairs or the galvanized trash can that the original scene contained, nor the blue wall. But they are not that importrant. I tried to replicate that light and the attitude as best I could.

Thanks for the challenge Alicia, I had been wanting to do a homage to my favorite film for some time. This was the perfect opportunity!

Con cariño para los chicos fs ;-)

Cuando os vi acercaros con esa cadencia y compostura me sonó enseguida esta música en la cabeza:

Little Green Bag (George Baker)

The We're Here is going to the movies! However, we have to re-imagine famous scenes with our own props & imagination. It got me thinking back to how I did a bunch of movie themed shots for Joe last year so decided this one would be lego based. Then it was the movie and wanted something I didn't do last year. Went through Die Hard, Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, The Crow, and many more before I decided Reservoir Dogs was the one for me. Now put on "Little Green Bag" and get the popcorn :-)

You people are ruthless.

God forbid I post a wedding photo that ANYone has ever done before. A pose. A location. A kiss in front of a fountain. “Oh, I’ve seen that done before… I want something unique… “ “Yeah, every wedding photographer does that shot…”

It’s so cutthroat out there that if anyone posts a “commonly done wedding photo” they get blasted, “Oh, EVERY wedding photographer does that shot… “ Well what people don’t realize is that those “typical” or “trendy” or “cliche” wedding shots work for a reason. AND, the particular wedding couple getting married obviously doesn’t have any shots like that because they just got married.

So it’s the pride between wedding photographers to strive to be unique. But I also see it from brides who commonly say, “I want unique photos; something original”. So when I suggest they host their wedding in the auto parts section of a Walmart, wear camouflage, and then have a food fight instead of a cake cutting, they realize that there are particular aspects to a wedding they want, but they want to make it unique. Guess what, the unique part of the photos is that YOU are in it.

Then the prideful bride wants her friends to be envious of her unique wedding photos, which other wedding photographers will try to imitate. And that’s where the photographer has to suggest things which might be a little strange or bizarre.

By the way, I’m photographing a wedding on the moon this weekend, and everyone is wearing Borat mankinis. I’ll try to be unique.

good films have perfect images

As I plan to steer my wedding photography towards a 'documentary' style, I found myself looking over old shots. This small set from 2017 (my first wedding gig) show the best man and groom having a smoke and pint before 'they' commit to the deed. Kinda interesting to look over old work sometimes, I think I initially chose only one or two out of these four images but now I think they all make a nice set.

My missus walked pass me as I was working on these in LR, they immediately caught her eye and she said 'wow! very 'Reservoir Dogs' like! 😎

These were made as part of a pulp- fiction set i call them "gangsta cakes"

and am making a series..lol they are cute but dangerous! :)

OK, here is an idea that I have been saving for a special occasion.

And that came today when i watched the 365 podcast. My Day 155 shot has been voted the photo of the week. It got to appear in the podcast. So i kinda felt it a bit apt to do this shot with my old cine camera today, and the title sums up the fact that it made my day!

So thanks guys for voting for me, i really appreciate it.
