Avec sa démarche sautillante, son corps mince et sa queue extraordinaire, la bergeronnette des ruisseaux est l'un des oiseaux les plus élégants et les plus beaux. Elle a le dessus gris acier et le dessous jaune brillant, surtout pendant la période de reproduction. Au printemps le mâle a la gorge noire et le pourtour des yeux rayé de blanc. La femelle a une gorge pâle. En hiver, la bergeronnette perd presque complètement les tons jaunes de son plumage à l'exception du croupion. Elle reste néanmoins plus gracieuse que la bergeronnette grise, notamment à cause de sa longue queue. Peut facilement être confondue au printemps et en été avec sa proche cousine, la bergeronnette printanière, qui a le dessus vert olive, une tête et un dessous jaune et une queue plus courte.

With its bouncy gait, slender body and extraordinary tail, the Brook Wagtail is one of the most elegant and beautiful birds. It has a steel gray upper and shiny yellow underside, especially during the breeding season. In the spring the male has black throat and the edge of the eyes striped with white. The female has a pale throat. In winter, the wagtail almost completely loses the yellow tones of its plumage except for the rump. She is still more graceful than the gray wagtail, especially because of its long tail. Can easily be confused in spring and summer with its close cousin, the wagtail spring, which has the olive green top, a yellow head and bottom and a shorter tail.
Avec 25 à 29 cm de long pour 130 à 230 grammes, le Grèbe castagneux (Tachybaptus ruficollis) est le plus petit grèbe d'Europe. En plumage nuptial, il est facilement identifiable par son plumage très sombre, ses joues et les côtés de son cou châtain qui lui ont valu son qualificatif de « castagneux » (la castagne étant le nom de la châtaigne en Gascogne) et une marque blanc crème à la base du bec. Son plumage internuptial, à partir de la fin de l'été, est plus terne.
En période de reproduction, le Grèbe castagneux se tient le plus souvent dans la végétation aquatique où il chasse et pêche des insectes aquatiques et leurs larves, des mollusques et de petits poissons, capturés essentiellement à moins de 1 mètre de profondeur.

With 25 to 29 cm long for 130 to 230 grams, the Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) is the smallest grebe in Europe. In nuptial plumage, it is easily identifiable by its very dark plumage, its cheeks and the sides of its chestnut neck which have earned it the qualifier of "castagneux" (the name of the castagne is the name of the chestnut in Gascony) and a creamy white mark at the base of the beak. His internuptial plumage, from the end of the summer, is duller.
In breeding season, the Little Grebe occurs most often in the aquatic vegetation where it hunts and fishes aquatic insects and their larvae, molluscs and small fish, caught mainly within 1 meter of depth.

Le Bruant jaune est un passereau vivement coloré. Le mâle en plumage nuptial arbore un plumage jaune et châtain roux du plus bel effet. Cette espèce est connue pour son chant décrit localement par plusieurs mots qui ne font que rappeler le rythme et ne sont qu'une pâle imitation du véritable son émis par l'oiseau.
Le Bruant jaune est largement répandu à travers la majeure partie de l'Europe, avec quelques populations partiellement migratrices ou dispersives après la reproduction. Il fréquente les zones cultivées et les pâturages boisés, les lisières des forêts et les landes de bruyères.
Le Bruant jaune est menacé par la destruction de l'habitat et sa population semble décliner, mais actuellement, l'espèce n'est pas globalement menacée.

The Yellowhammer is a brightly colored passerine bird. The male in nuptial plumage sports a yellow and reddish plumage of the most beautiful effect. This species is known for its song described locally by several words which only remind the rhythm and are only a pale imitation of the real sound emitted by the bird.
The Yellowhammer is widely distributed across most of Europe, with some populations partially migratory or dispersive after breeding. It frequents cultivated areas and wooded pastures, forest edges and heather moors.
The Yellow Sparrow is threatened by habitat destruction and its population appears to be declining, but currently the species is not globally threatened.

Immer zur Hochsommerzeit fliegt einer der größten mitteleuropäischen Tagfalter, der Kaisermantel oder Silberstrich (Argynnis paphia). Im Bild ein Weibchen, das gerade an einer Distelblüte Nektar saugt.
Die Fortpflanzung dieses Falters ist außerordentlich interessant und komplex. Soviel sei verraten, dass die Eier vom begatteten Weibchen an Baumstämmen abgelegt werden, an deren Fuß Veilchen wachsen. Weitergehende Information findet man hier:
Always at the height of summer, one of the largest Central European butterflies, the silver-washed fritillary (Argynnis paphia), flies. The picture shows a female sucking nectar on a thistle flower.
The reproduction of this butterfly is extremely interesting and complex. The eggs are laid by the mated female on tree trunks with violets growing at their base. Further information can be found here:

L'accouplement a lieu principalement au début du printemps et dure fréquemment entre 12 heures et 7 jours. On peut donc très facilement l'observer. Cet accouplement prolongé est probablement un moyen pour les mâles d'empêcher la compétition avec d'autres mâles.
Mating takes place mainly in early spring and frequently lasts between 12 hours and 7 days. It can therefore be observed very easily. This prolonged mating is probably a way for males to prevent competition with other males.

Woman's Head-Leonardo da Vinci drawing (reproduction) on a card.
◾Leonardo da Vinci created this delightful drawing in the year 1473, in the very beginning of his career as an artist. It portrays a woman’s head leaning to the left side, and it was produced in ink on paper. As it’s the case of most of the ink-on-paper drawings, this piece rarely comes to public exhibition, for the vulnerability of its media. It is currently part of the amazing collection of Uffizi gallery, in Florence. ◾
