ESCAPE PLAN
Installation by Elinor Saragoussi - West Gallery
Visitors entering the West Gallery at the Albany Museum of Art are finding themselves transported into a fantastical environment peopled by equally fanciful characters in Elinor Saragoussi’s installation Escape Plan. The exhibition was designed specifically for the West Gallery.
“A museum is a repository of history, reverence and the object,” AMA Guest Curator Didi Dunphy said. “It is rare to have a museum jump out of the confines of this definition to present a laboratory-like expression of the artistic endeavor. We are so very thrilled to commission Eli Saragoussi to create this site-specific work for the West Gallery at AMA. This opportunity provides the museumgoer a look into the working artist’s practice.”
The bright and colorful installation belies an underlying dark uneasiness. “As I become more and more infatuated with the exercise of building my own reality through artistic creation, Escape Plan is yet another attempt to realize the fantasy I yearn to inhabit,” Saragoussi says. “With this installation, I have explored a particular ‘pocket universe’—the domain of the hooded giants.”
The hooded denizens, inspired by her mother’s recent brain surgery and her own insecurities, reside in bright, whimsical landscape augmented by an ambient soundscape created by Saragoussi’s musician partner Max Boyd. She said the “sweetly sordid” imagery lures the viewer in for the more melancholic subtext. In an age when experiences are so often virtual, Saragoussi says she is striving to create work that, however briefly, draws the audience out of its own reality. It is an journey that should be experienced in real life, not online, she says.

On January 2, 2017, the AMA was hit by hurricane-force straight-line winds that devastated much of Albany and Southwest Georgia. The 90 mph-plus winds tore away large sections of the roof from the building, allowing rain into offices, galleries, and vaults on the second floor. The AMA worked tirelessly during those critical first days to ensure the collection was stabilized and moved to suitable storage or sent to professionals for conservation. None of the works in the museum collection or on loan were destroyed as a result of the storms. All works were secure when a second major storm, including tornadoes, hit the area three weeks later.
The first 2017 storm forced the Museum to close for nearly nine months while repairs were made. In August 2017, it reopened its three downstairs galleries, where it has continually hosted a series of temporary exhibitions. In April 2022, the remainder of the AMA's permanent collection returned from the Conservation Center in Chicago, where the artworks damaged in the 2017 storm had been restored and kept. To celebrate this homecoming of the full collection, the AMA opened a "collection takeover" exhibition starting May 12, with all AMA galleries devoted to showing works of art from the collection.
"The Albany Museum of Art brings the art of the South to the world and the art of the world to the South. We build connections with individuals and communities to inspire curiosity, appreciation, understanding, and passion for art. We engage diverse experiences and perspectives in our audiences through relevant exhibitions, events, collection preservation, research, and educational programming.
The Albany Museum of Art has its origins in the early 1960s when Albany, Georgia residents formed the Southwest Georgia Art Association. That organization obtained its not-for-profit status in March 1964. Relying on volunteer staff and the donation of space in a defunct hosiery mill, the group established a program of exhibitions, lectures, and art instruction."

Province of Zeeland Archive, Middelburg NL
A mansion designed in 1765 by J.P. van Baurscheit in the old town centre of Middelburg was chosen to house the new Province of Zeeland Archive. The historic interior was restored and primed to receive the documentary and administrative part and the restoration divisions. In the garden behind the building is a three-level underground repository, and in a new-build pavilion in the garden are the public zone, reception, reading rooms, meeting/exhibition room and coffee corner. The pavilion’s triangular form derives from the yards between houses that are a characteristic feature of Middelburg. A staircase and lift in the central void connect all repositories with the reception and reading rooms and with the passages on the three floors. Like the historic part the new-build portion is a solid affair, though the toned-down finish of metal and concrete contrasts with the interior of the old mansion.
