The Moravian Cemetery - Hillview Mausoleum
++ ++ ++ ++ ++
For over 250 years, the cemetery of choice for Staten Island families, as well as many people around the
tri-state area, has been the Moravian Cemetery. Widely recognized for its beautifully manicured grounds, lakeside view, and natural knolls and valleys, the non-sectarian cemetery offers a setting of beautiful serenity for all people. The Moravian Cemetery encompasses 113 acres, and is the property of the Moravian Church of Staten Island. Its newest development, "The Hillview Mausoleum," is part of a continuing tradition of expansion and improvement for the community.
It is a universal experience...that our loved one's final resting place becomes a precious niche in the world for us. Ideally, the environment of this special place should reflect the continuing beauty of our memories.
.
At the historic Moravian Cemetery, we respect the need for beauty in final resting place. Our non-sectarian cemetery is well-known as one of the most picturesque and impeccably maintained memorial sites in the
tri-state area. www.moraviancemetery.com/aboutus.htm

The aim of art is to tidy up one’s inner and outer worlds.
–Agnès Varda, Les glaneurs et la glaneuse
A suitcase’s existence implies a journey into the unknown, and its function is to provide a point of collection for a condensed world. As an artist who is also a collector of objects, I am drawn to the suitcase as a unique, liminal space between interior and exterior.
The things we collect are a glimpse into the inner workings of our minds—our hopes, memories, choices, and beliefs—yet they exist as a part of daily life and are therefore made invisible. I want to give these small, collected things value and weight. In these Repository (Travel Series) prints, by placing personal, collected objects in unknown locations, one is forced to question that which is taken for granted. Discomfort and confusion occur in the unexpected juxtaposition of familiarity and the unknown, in places without points of reference. My small, collected objects are made monumental, skewing perception of the visual space and placing them outside of time.
I believe, in this modern world where images are primarily digital, fleeting and ephemeral, that the images I create should have some grounding in a real, physical space. I am interested in making images that are not only about personal, physical things, but which are made physical and tangible in themselves.

Written By the Famous Prussian, For the sole Amusement of the Chickabiddy Generation." Embellished with copper plates. Published and sold wholesale by James Lumsden & Son, price twopence.
Page 15 (right) is divided between two oval half-page illustrations. Both have a caption written above the picture, the above "The Engagement With Paul Jones", the below "The Dragon Blown Up". Both relate to the story of Wake Wilful, narrated by Nurse Dandlem in the accompanying text.
Wake Wilful is a "naughty" boy from Yorkshire, who through his fault of disobedience is persuaded to bord a ship in search of adventure. The "Dragon" is attacked by Pirate Paul Jones, and destroyed, leaving Wake Wilful to his, per implication, well-deserved ill fate.
This chapbook was, typically for its kind, intended as an educational and moral tool, instilling a desire to be virtuous in its young readership while also being enjoyable. The ample illustrations in this volume made the text more accessible to young readers, who could ponder over images more easily than over words.

Page 22 (left) is divided between two oval half-page illustrations. Both have a caption written above the picture, the above "The Crew In The Long Boat", the below "Wake Wilful In Irons". Both relate to the story of Wake Wilful, narrated by Nurse Dandlem in the accompanying text.
Wake Wilful is a "naughty" boy, who through his fault of disobedience is persuaded to bord a ship in search of adventure. Having suffered a pirate attack and sunk, the ship's crew is confined in the longboat shown in the above image. They arrive on an island, deserted but for the despotic giant Grumbolumbo. Seeking shelter in his cave, the crew is trapped and taken prisoner by the giant. Wake Wilful is shown ironed to the wall, by implication well-deserving of his misfortune.
