I was out shooting this pier when the interplay of light and dark made its very strong presence. It was interesting how very strong the two were when opposed to each other and the rather clear delineation that existed between them. Somewhat like the "Yin & Yang", up & down, north & south, how can we know one without the other? Either way, for a brief moment, the story was no longer the structure, but instead a more etherial one that asks questions as mentioned above. How can we know one without the other, since all things are relative.

It was amazing to see this wild Tawny Owl hunting and flying in daylight hours.

Wryneck - Jynx Torquilla

Ogmore

The wrynecks (genus Jynx) are a small but distinctive group of small Old World woodpeckers. Jynx is from the Ancient Greek iunx, the Eurasian wryneck.

Like the true woodpeckers, wrynecks have large heads, long tongues which they use to extract their insect prey and zygodactyl feet, with two toes pointing forward, and two backwards. However, they lack the stiff tail feathers that the true woodpeckers use when climbing trees, so they are more likely than their relatives to perch on a branch rather than an upright trunk.

Their bills are shorter and less dagger-like than in the true woodpeckers, but their chief prey are ants and other insects, which they find in decaying wood or almost bare soil. They re-use woodpecker holes for nesting, rather than making their own holes. The eggs are white, as with many hole nesters.

The two species have cryptic plumage, with intricate patterning of greys and browns. The adult moults rapidly between July and September, although some moult continues in its winter quarters. The voice is a nasal woodpecker-like call.

These birds get their English name from their ability to turn their heads almost 180 degrees. When disturbed at the nest, they use this snake-like head twisting and hissing as a threat display.

This was taken in White Sands National Park, New Mexico. At 275 square miles it is the largest gypsum sand desert in the world. I was reflecting on the magnitude of the landscape when I looked down and saw the beetle.

Size really is a relative concept.

Hard to believe that the UK only has one species of hornets but in time the Asian hornet maybe the second which has recently arrived. Although much larger then its close relative the common wasp the European hornet is less aggressive and as well as feeding on invertebrates etc is also an important pollinator as nectar and sap is a great source of a high-energy substance. Can be found mostly in woodlands, gardens and parkland in south and central UK expanding northwards.

When we see a small fishing boat safe in the harbour, it looks big enough. When we view it from the coast near the huge cliffs of Moher, then view the massive Atlantic ocean, it looks so small and vulnerable. Thank you dear fishermen

Hot, humid and steamy days have come early this Summer. The high heat can be a little bit daunting, but I love the soft textures the high levels of water vapor in the air gives to the light. It's Friday already, my friends, have a wonderful weekend. Oh, and Happy Fence Friday! :)

For a second time Tiny & Tinca visited their close Relatives in the Zoo . Still very much impressed (if not scared) about their huge appearance ...

I have a photo exhibition called Relatives. Visitors can see pictures of shepherds from Hungary.

The hulking great steel bridge above me was contrasted by the big stone arched bridge just down the road. The wide-angle and relative distance make that second bridge look tiny when in reality it was about three floors high. It had a character and volume to it that the newer, steel construction simply didn't.

A car drove past as I took the shot. I wondered what they would think about me. My disordered brain quickly inferred lots of negative things. I tried to think about something else.

Some Relative Shelter in the Fjord this morning. 12m seas at the work site so a sail back into the lee of the land until the wind eases.

My relatives used to run a small post office … the stamps they collected provided a view into history, art & politics.

Keeping watch.......

Female ring teal on the lookout.

The ringed teal (Callonetta leucophrys) is a small duck of South American forests. It is the only species of the genus Callonetta. Usually placed with the dabbling ducks (Anatinae), this species may actually be closer to shelducks and belong in the subfamily Tadorninae; its closest relative is possibly the maned duck.

While visiting old Eagle Point Cemetery,I struck up a conversation with an older gentleman that was also there. He told me that rumor was that the Grant's buried here were relatives of president and war hero US Grant.Sadly,a quick search yielded me no such information however.A list of all those interred there...

Makes for a great story though...

Have a safe Memorial Day everyone, and remember all our war heroes.
