La statua di Cristo Rei è la magnifica statua di Cristo che si erge su un'altura nella città di Almada, sulla riva sud del Rio Tejo. E' alta 28m e poggia su una base di più di 80 m. Fu realizzata dallo scultore Francisco Franco De Sousa che si ispirò alla famosa statua brasiliana. De Sousa morì nel 1953 non vedendo così l'erezione della statua sul basamentro. Il monumento fu inaugurato ufficialmente il 17 Maggio 1959. Il Cristo e il santuario si trovano su un punto panoramico strategico offrendo così una stupenda visuale su Lisbona e sul ponte sospeso. Il Cristo che apre le braccia verso la città è visibile da qualsiasi punto della capitale.

With outstretched arms, the figure of Christ the King faces the Ponte 25 de Abril and the city of Lisbon. It stands on a 75 m high base. This is 113 m above the Tagus. The statue itself is 28m tall, making it the seventh tallest statue of Christ in the world. The monument is one of the tallest structures in Portugal and the most important attraction in Almada. Because of its height, the statue is one of the best viewpoints of Lisbon. Along with Fátima and Santiago de Compostela, it is one of the three most important pilgrimage sites on the Iberian Peninsula.
When the Archbishop of Lisbon Dom Manuel Gonçalves Cerejeira visited the then capital of Brazil in 1934, the Cristo Redentor (Rio de Janeiro), inaugurated in 1931 (30 m tall) inspired him to build a replica in Lisbon. He managed to convince the Portuguese episcopacy of his plan. At an April 20, 1940 gathering in Fátima, the bishops vowed to erect the statue if God spared Portugal from World War II.
After the end of the war, on December 18, 1949, construction of the statue began. The Christ sculpture was made by Portuguese sculptor Francisco Franco de Sousa. Portuguese architect António Lino designed the base. After around ten years of construction, the statue was inaugurated on Pentecost Sunday, May 17, 1959. 300,000 people attended, including the Archbishops of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and the Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques. Pope John XXIII was not present and sent his greetings. A plan to expand the site was approved in 1984 to mark the 25th anniversary of the inauguration. A reception center with administrative buildings and a chapel was built. The buildings were renovated in 2001/02. On May 17, 2007, the Sala João XXIII was inaugurated with eight paintings on the theme of Pax in Terris. On the same day, in front of the statue, the Cruz Alta was laid, which had previously been in the Sanctuary of Fátima.

Noche de Reyes...
Que lluny queden aquelles nits màgiques en les que jo formaba part del "col.lectiu" dels més petits...En aquella època, seria cap als anys seixanta, els meus pares, no sé pas com s'ho feien perquè l'endemà de la nit de Reis, la taula del menjador aparegués sempre plena de joquines per ma germana i per mi.
Durant tot l'any l'economia de casa era més aviat precaria, el meu pare havia de fer hores extraordinaries per poder aportar més diners a casa, i tot i així, feina rai...però uns dies abans de Reis, la il.lusió dels meus pares perquè no ens faltéssin els regals, restaba darrere de la porta de l'armari de la seva habitació, quan inexplicablement uns dies abans de Reis, el pany es quedaba trabat sense que hi hagués manera de poder-lo obrir fins passades les festes nadalenques.
I avui, sóc jo qui faig la màgia, fent que la hipotètica porta de l'armari quedi trabada i de cap manera es pugui obrir, davant la il.lusió innocent de la meva néta que està esperant als Reis amb deliri...
Qué lejos quedan aquellas noches mágicas en las que yo formaba parte del "colectivo" de los más pequeños ... En aquella época, sería hacia los años sesenta, mis padres, no sé cómo lo hacían para que al día siguiente de la noche de Reyes, la mesa del comedor apareciera siempre llena de juguetes para mi hermana y para mí.
Durante todo el año la economía de casa era más bien precaria, mi padre había de hacer horas extraordinarias para poder aportar más dinero en casa, y aún así...pero unos días antes de Reyes, la ilusión de mis padres para que no nos faltasen los regalos, quedaba tras la puerta del armario de su habitación, cuando inexplicablemente unos días antes de Reyes, la cerradura se quedaba trabada sin que hubiera manera de poderla abrir hasta pasadas las fiestas navideñas.
Y hoy, soy yo quien hago la magia, haciendo que la hipotética puerta del armario quede trabada y en modo alguno se pueda abrir, ante la ilusión inocente de mi nieta que está esperando a los Reyes on delirio...

O Santuário do Cristo Rei é um santuário e monumento católico localizado em Almada, com vista para a cidade de Lisboa. Foi inspirado pela estátua do Cristo Redentor, no Rio de Janeiro.
