Our Sharp Shooters Camera Club had a field trip to Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Idaho. The light did not cooperate at all with heavy overcast nearly the whole time, but the surrounding area still had sunshine. I didn't do very well photographing birds but have seen some fine bird photos taken by other club members. I had a good time and look forward to other trips soon.
Have you been to India? Oh such a complex land to navigate! Nothing quite prepares you for experience, not even years of traveling in Asia.
Its sights and sounds, mingled with the aroma of exotic spices can overwhelm the visitor. History of the land is complicated by signs of a colonial past that was overthrown by a non- violent force. Many of the majestic architectural masterpieces remain and have been restored. This past joins with many other periods when others of another religion ruled the land and created their own masterpieces. Even the most passionate historian can be overcome with facts and details.
One must add the conflict between religions that seem to be ever present and ever changing: Islam vs. Hinduism. Wars were fought. Many were persecuted. Two nations emerged from one. Though many Muslims moved to Pakistan, many still remain in India. There always seems to be an undercurrent of mistrust.
So as a visitor, one must not only navigate through the past to understand the India of today, but also come to grips with clogged streets of vehicles with horns blasting away, the ever present dust in the air, and the sights of the every day struggles of the outcasts of society.
Who is who? What is poverty? Who is happy? Who is poor? What Hindu god is this? Did a Hindu or Muslim man or a British man build this building?
As much as I had difficulty with some of the arrangements of my first trip, I must applaud the man who sat in his tiny office surrounded by men on phones in front of their computers. He gave me a comprehensive itinerary that took me to places I would never have booked myself.
This is an image of the prayer area of the famous Jana Masjid mosque in Delhi. It was built in the 1650’s from beautiful red sandstone and marble. I will allow you to try to answer the questions I posed above.

We saw this female Common whitetail dragonfly (Plathemis lydia) at Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge during our scouting day before the eclipse. According to Wikipedia, it is also called a long-tailed skimmer. Whitetail females can be distinguished by their smaller size, shorter bodies, and white zigzag abdominal stripes; the abdominal stripes of L. puchella (which they resemble) are straight and yellow.

PLAIN-TAILED WREN Pheugopedius euophrys. A Plain-tailed Wren is illuminated by the bright early morning sun as it moves about in low vegetation at the Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge at 8:48 AM on October 3, 2017.
Formerly placed in the genus Thryothorus, the Plain-tailed Wren belongs to the family Troglodytidae and is found in the Andes from extreme southern Colombia south through Ecuador to northern Perú.
The splendid Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge is situated in northern Ecuador about a one hour drive south of Quito near the small town of Tambillo. After turning to the east at Tambillo, one drives about 10 minutes to Amaguaña where a right turn puts you on the road to San Pedro de Pilopata from which one continues uphill to the Pasochoa Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is situated in the semicircular collapsed Pasochoa Volcano. Around 100,000 years ago, the volcano exploded and blew off the western half of the preexisting volcanic cone. The refuge is remarkable for its well preserved native vegetation and is located above a stretch of beautiful pastureland facing the interandean valley to the west.

I never really noticed how much the butterflies hang around in the trees. I noticed this one taking refuge during a heavy rain.

Scenes like this are not common in East Texas, but they do exist. Here a spring-fed stream cuts through an erodible mudstone outcrop over the Wilcox Group. The water here is clear, clean, and cold, even at the height of summer. Above the mudstone walls grows a lush forest of mature beech and other hardwoods.
Materials: Camera raw, Adobe photo-shop.
Process: I made some edits in camera raw by adding a slight vignette and making the overall image sharper in both camera raw and photo-shop.
Idea: To make a piece of land art that shows a good example of texture and rhythm.
Got it! No need to give me that stern look. This is YOUR domain and I'm just passing through. I understand–er, MISTER Raptor of Old Man River. I know you spotted me a mile away. I'm not going to disturb that breakfast duck you spotted or the big catfish making a splash. I'm just a fly on a wall. My camera doesn't even click anymore. It's silent. I'm not going to disrupt you.
Note: I am near the southwest Kentucky / northwest Tennessee border visiting certain spots in and around Reelfoot National Wildlife Refuge. Frankly, I'm not certain what side of the border this spot is in.

I came across this area last winter after an unusual southern snowfall and was mesmerized by the beauty and the feeling that I had entered into an inner sanctuary, a kind of sacred space. The sounds of the world outside are muffled under a canopy of these fascinating trees. It is a place of silence and solitude ... a place of refuge.
