Here's yet another from the way back archives and the caption I wrote at the time for RP.net:
At first it seems a bit ungainly and dare I say ugly, but after a bit it really does kind of grow on you. I imagine this is how fans felt in 1949 when they gazed at the first Budd RDC polishing the high iron.
I probably should have titled this photo "Can you believe I get paid to do this!?" On Thursday the 29th the US Forest Service needed to take a dozen people in to inspect their construction sites at Spencer and Grandview where they are building a series of "whistle stops" and trails only accessible by rail. Since I hadn't been in there in a while I was real interested to see the progress as this is a real exciting project that should draw a lot more people to the railroad. Also, I talked to the ARR's head of passenger marketing about doing some promotional shots of the DMU for future railroad PR use since we weren't on a schedule and there were no conflicting train movements. All in all a great day out on the railroad visiting with employees, our Forest Service partners, and enjoying the stunning fall scenery.
For those interested in a bit more detail, this particular spot is the southernmost of five tunnels that come in quick succession between MP 52.7 and 51.8. After exiting this last and final tunnel on the on the southward climb trains immediately cross the gorge over the Placer River on a 133 ft deck truss bridge all while climbing a steady 2.1% grade.

Addendum: alas the propulsion system just wasn't up to the task and the Glacier Discovery became much more popular and outgrew the seat capacity of 751 alone so while it remains in daily service today it is only used as a cab control car on the expanded locomotive hauled train that makes this run all summer long.

Test train CN 1501 and VIA 26 are going in opposite directions in the rain. CN 1501 is heading west and testing the Freight Track, while VIA 26 is on its way to Montreal's Central Station.
A pair of Metro-North RDCs idle at Suffern station between runs. It seems the second unit needed some attention as a mechanic can be seen crouching near one of the trucks. At the time RDCs were used on midday shuttles between Suffern and Port Jervis, NY. While it appears there are still four tracks here (dating back to the Erie/EL era), the two outer tracks are severed past the station platform. 19 is an RDC1 that was built as New Haven 32. It worked for Amtrak before being purchased by Metro-North in the late 1970s.

CN RDC number 1501 reincarnated as a geo car, scans the EMR Mattawamkeag Subdivision as the car heads for Saint John on September 23rd, 2023. Having crossed into the US at Van Buren on MNR, the 1501 worked its way down off of MNR to EMR at Millinocket, then to NBSR at McAdam, and back to CN at Saint John.
This catch was completely by chance, after I heard 1501 get paper south out of Millinocket. Unfortunately lighting was pretty bad, since they had to wait for EMR 909 to come on duty, to pull the rear of 910's train off the bypass to let them through, before shoving it back up onto the Millinocket Sub, for 120 to grab that night.
NBM Railways has used test trains from CN, CSX, and CP/KC to test its main lines over the years, in addition to the FRA train.

PATrain’s 4 RDC’s throttle it up heading through Laughlin Junction on their way from Grant Street. The motley crew of RDC’s, some ex-B&O, some not, were the backbone of Pittsburgh Port Authority’s efforts to maintain the former B&O commuter operations from Grant Street to North Versailles from 1975 until the ex-WAG F units showed up in April of 1981. The date on the slide is August 1st, 1981, but I would imagine that that’s the processing date, so it’s likely the summer of 1980, I’ll just stick with 8/1/1981. 8/1/1981. James P. Marcus photo. A set of nicely refurbished RDCs passes the old Reading Station in Tamaqua. This was the second of three southbounds we'd see here in just over an hour - just like the old days! These old RDCs were recently reactivated and handle weekend trips between Reading and Jim Thorpe during the summer months.
Tonight's post of two photos both feature RDCs. This shot shows BCR RDCs at Squamish from July 1988.

After making an extremely rare run down to Madison Street on the Waukesha, here is CN 1501, the RDC at CP Park taking its signal into the busier parts of the line. Aside from L501 which still goes to an industry near Fullerton, seeing any train at all south of B12 on the Waukesha is nothing short of a miracle in this day and age. Since 2009 this stretch line has been unused and near abandonment. I'm not exactly sure how often CN runs the RDC down here, but it seems to me to be once a year.
The last remaining cars of the New Haven Railroad's experimental Roger Williams trainset - cars 140, 162, and 141 - are seen stopped at the former station in Stockbridge, MA. The trainset was on the way from the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum to the station in North Canaan, CT for display during the Canaan Railroad Days event.
A pair of MARC RDC’s spends the weekend in Brunswick, Maryland. On Monday morning, they will head to Martinsburg to begin their revenue journey to Washington.

VIA Rail's set of aging RDC Budd Cars crosses a small River outside the down of Dowling Ontario. These ancient rail relics are essentially buses on rails, each having their own engine above the cabin they use a direct drive to the wheels opposed to the standard Diesel Electric configuration. Still used on their route between Sudbury and White River they are still earning their keep serving flag stops out in the sticks of Northern Ontario.

B&M RDCs along with a BN lease unit have a commuter train rolling right along at MP 224. Moments later another commuter slammed by on the other track. We just missed a meet by a few seconds.
My first published photo is in the September 2020 issue of Railfan & Railroad! Though the photo is of a different Budd product, it's fittingly in the issue about the Budd RDCs since I am working with Brick Model Railroader to produce instructions for a Lego version of the RDC!
For those interested, the instructions will include the RDC-1, 2, 3, 4, and 9, and phase I and II versions.
CN 1501, the track geometry RDC, creeps south along the all but abandoned portion of the Waukesha Sub south of B12.
To my knowledge, the line between B12 & the Altenheim Sub has not seen any regular traffic aside from these rare RDC moves since the CN takeover of the J.

During the Canaan Railroad Days event in North Canaan, CT, the coaches and cabs of the Roger Williams were open to the public. The trainset was built by Budd and was based on their widely successful RDC. The two cab cars of this trainset were the only RDC cars to ever receive full cabs, making this a unique view!
