A Brice unit coal train approaches the crest of a momentum curve at Olinger, Va. on January 22, 2019, at 5:04 PM. My uncle, Rex Yonce, was head brakeman on the Norton Local with J4A No. 1899 when it derailed all eight drivers coming around the same curve. The engineer and fireman bailed, but Rex stayed on, closed the throttle, and brought the train to a stop. After the 2-8-2 was rerailed, the section gang had to deal with replacing a long stretch of chewed up ties.

A Union Pacific freight is running flat out through Palisades Canyon, Nevada on March 9, 2009. I shot this pan view while standing on the back of my rented SUV (not moving, of course!). This route was built as the nation's first transcontinental railroad--this segment constructed by the Central Pacific. It later became the Southern Pacific before eventually being swallowed by the UP several years ago. It's amazing to consider all the locomotives that have passed this way since 1869--everything from wood-burning 4-4-0 American types to this UP GE AC4400CW. Considering the fact the 213-ton number 5813 cranks out 4400 horsepower with AC traction motors, that's an enormous leap in railroad technology. One wonders what the future holds.

The first time I remember eating at the Red Stone Drive-In at Glenita, VA was 1959. We were headed for home after a day of shopping in Bristol (well---my mother and her friend did the shopping--I spent most of the day at the passenger station watching trains). As we left after a hamburger and fries, five Southern F-units dropped downgrade on dynamic brakes in the gathering darkness--an image that's still clear in my memory. The on-again, off-again eatery was a place I would visit for lunch a few times in the late '70s, but then it closed. It re-opened several years ago, as shown in this July 17, 2008 shot as a westbound NS train heads toward Natural Tunnel (less than a mile away). Alas, I noticed the "Red Bone" is now closed again. That's a shame, because it was always a great place to watch trains----and eat hamburgers and have a shake.

CSX train backing to St. Charles at L&N Junction, VA (Pocket). From here, it's trackage rights over NS (Southern).

L&N train 65 completes a set-off at Appalachia, VA in 1967. The power includes a U25C, U28C and two RS3s. A classy '57 Chevy crosses Kilbourne Ave. in the distance.
