The Black Tern is a rare visitor for our way inland area. This is either a juvenile or non-breeding adult. They both look so much alike. Far shot taken at 7:23 p.m. with the setting sun at Peace Valley Park, New Britain PA.

The Fen orchid (Liparis loeselii) is rare and endangered orchid species in the UK with a strong population at Kenfig NNR. Dry weather takes it tall and I couldn’t spot any in the place I visited from pre-pandemic times. So, I was very happy to get away with couple images of one plant thanks to some tips from another orchid lover passing by and a guided tour as the marker of the right spot. Here is the result. Kenfig Pool National Nature Reserve. Bridgend, Wales, U.K.

So far December has been extremely dark and dull. Hardly any sunshine, my solar powered lights in the garden only work for minutes in the evening. Instead of presenting nightshots taken at lunchtime I prefer to post a shot out if the tin. Porta Westfalica, Ostwestfalen, Germany

It was a great moment to finally get a photo of a Harris's Hawk. Arizona is full of surprises.

When I stopped admiring the source of the Rhine and looked behind me, I saw these protected Alpine beauties, the large (5 - 20cm) Alpine asters! Not just one, but a whole bunch. I had to climb higher on a steep slope, but I absolutely wanted a good shot of them.

One of the two Avadavats found in India, one being Red and other being Green. These are endemic to India and are incredibly rare to sight. The birds are fast disappearing due to rampant wild life trade of these birds where it is known as Green Waxbill.. The birds are currently categorized as "Vulnerable" in IUCN List and found only in a few places across the country.

The birds are around 10 cms long and always forage in flocks. A fellow birder found them quite by chance and we made a beeline to that place to get a glimpse of this beauty. The bird was foraging in open fields and it was impossible to get a view of it from far. We started walking very slowly and carefully only to see them appear right in front of our eyes and fly away into the bush.

Thank you very much in advance for your views and feedback.

we very rarely get snow on Vancouver Island.

but since i returned from India we have been gripped in the coldest winter weather in memory ..

normally i am bragging about flowers in February . ha ha

Hello Everyone!

The Ram's Head Lady Slipper is very small, about the size of the end of my thumb. They are tough to spot because of their diminutive size and because they easily camouflage into the forest setting. These native orchids are rare and are found specifically within coniferous forests and bogs. This was found along the Brokenhead Wetland Interpretive Trail which is found within the boreal forest about an hour's drive north of Winnipeg. This native orchid is listed as "of special concern" in every state and province for which it occurs.

Thank you so much for stopping by and for your comments. I do love hearing from you! Have a wonderful day and weekend!

The Pileated Woodpecker is in our area, but not in great abundance. I see one about every three years. Was thrilled to find this male in my favorite forest.

The colorful Lewis’s woodpecker is a rare visitor to our area and It is a “life bird” for me…never seen one before! It was named after Meriwether Lewis who first saw the bird in 1805 while on his famous westward journey with William Clark. According to Cornell, it is a woodpecker in name, but it forages like a flycatcher and flies like a crow! Santa Margarita, CA

Happy Sunday morning all,

Every now and then one gets a rare and unexpected sighting on safari. This particular morning was one such occasion.

This is an image of a honey badger, a nocturnal animal which is very rarely seen during daylight hours. It was a first for me and a first for our guide as well. We came across a den and had the pleasure of actually seeing two of them. The one featured here was the active one, running back and forth in a repetitive pattern between a point in the distance and the den.

Getting this image required figuring out the behavioural pattern and getting as low down in the vehicle as possible. Doing these things allowed one to be able to enter the world of this fascinating and rarely seen animal.

We discovered a great pawpaw patch at a WMA north of here that Zebra swallowtails love. This species prefers to nectar on tiny blossoms like these (ID??) and wild blueberry in early Spring. This shot is not brightened nor saturated ... I wanted to show how their red spots naturally pop out at you - as if a child had opened a box of giant bright crayons and gone to work!

Pretty rare for me to try something in B&W, but I wanted to give it a go in this one....going to the extreme really. Probably not that good, but I like it and...it's all that really matters I guess. I'm hoping to expand my photography in 2017 and get out of a rut it feels like I've gotten into. Look for more intimate scenes...better light, better compositions....just have to see how it goes, but something to work on at least. Anyway, this shot is from last April in the Smokies, up Lynn Camp Prong in the Tremont area. I hope everyone's year is off to a great start!

The Agami Heron is a very rare sighting as they travel close to the edge of the rivers and if there is any noise they are quick to head for cover and safety. We were so fortunate to have seen one on our recent trip to the Pantanal, Brazil . It remained in view for quite some time and we were thrilled to be able to observe just how beautiful this agami heron is.

Enjoy your day and may it be a very blessed one. Thank you all for your kind likes and comments !!
