The Black Tern is a rare visitor for our way inland area. This is either a juvenile or non-breeding adult. They both look so much alike. Far shot taken at 7:23 p.m. with the setting sun at Peace Valley Park, New Britain PA.
Spotted these rare birds while walking down by the River Clyde.

So far December has been extremely dark and dull. Hardly any sunshine, my solar powered lights in the garden only work for minutes in the evening. Instead of presenting nightshots taken at lunchtime I prefer to post a shot out if the tin. Porta Westfalica, Ostwestfalen, Germany
When I stopped admiring the source of the Rhine and looked behind me, I saw these protected Alpine beauties, the large (5 - 20cm) Alpine asters! Not just one, but a whole bunch. I had to climb higher on a steep slope, but I absolutely wanted a good shot of them.

but since i returned from India we have been gripped in the coldest winter weather in memory ..

GOLDEN BRUSHTAIL possums, adorable and rare, are an unusual form of the common brushtail possum that get their fluffy golden coats from a genetic mutation that results in low levels of melanin in their skin and fur; this is the same pigment that gives human skin and hair its colour and makes you look tanned.
Unfortunately for these little guys, their colour is more of a bane in the wild because it makes them conspicuous to predators. It’s hard to hide among the leaves when you’ve got bright golden fur! Because of this, the golden brushtail possum is a rare sight in the wild, being found mostly in small pockets around Tasmania where they have fewer wild predators.

These geese have unique curly feathers caused by a lack of a rigid quill.
Not a rare bird, but a rare one to our yard. This female Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) came by for a visit and some eats. She is very pretty and must have a nest nearby.

A leucistic plains zebra (Equus quagga) living in a herd of normally pigmented zebras. Leucism is a genetic condition in which there is partial loss of pigmentation in an animal resulting in white, pale, or patchy coloration.

Conservation status: Near Threatened
With only about 600 left in the world including captivity it was exciting finding one out in the wild especially since it was reported three days ago in our area. Very rare sighting here. Camrose County, Alberta. Aproximately 230 meters away.

The Pileated Woodpecker is in our area, but not in great abundance. I see one about every three years. Was thrilled to find this male in my favorite forest.

I've gone to the Tetons the last week of Sept. every year for the past seven years. It is a RARE moment in time when you can get a clear shot unobstructed by the smoke. This was such a moment. I was grateful.

The appearance of the brilliant summer tanager here on the Central Coast has delighted local birders and photographers alike! Morro Bay, CA
It was an unusual moment to spot this male Common Loon in full breeding plumage. This is a first for me. Normally when spotted they are out in the middle of a lake. Their colors and markings are truly amazing.
CN 2417 leads train 435 under the signals at Paris Junction.
With so many C40-8M's up for sale, stored or going for scrap, having this unit leading was quite the treat.

Grab shot in fading light...spotted this Reed Bunting while I was doing the dishes...only the 2nd time in 8 years I have seen one out back.
I got a new perspective of my hometown this morning. The gates to the highly exclusive "Royal Brighton Yacht Club" were thrown open to the public for the "Keiser GREAT Australia Day Swim". The junior competitors started their race from the pier, swimming but to shore. I was primarily taking photos of my daughter, but couldn't resist turning 180˚ to take a sneaky pic' of the city.

In a scene that has probably never played out before, a former Montana Rail Link SD35 leads a loaded grain train west on Genesse & Wyoming’s Mid Michigan Railroad at Merrill, Michigan. With the need to move the entire train of 105 loads from the elevator in Hemlock to the GLC interchange in Alma in one piece (something the MMRR’s single four-axel would be far from capable of) a trio of GLC locomotives were brought in to get the train over the road. GLC power on this portion of railroad is about a once-a-year occurance, and when I saw the MRL 705 in Laurel, Montana in August of 2019, I don’t think I could possibly have been convinced that just three years later I’d be watching it pull it’s guts out on a lightly used shoreline branch less than a half hour from my home in Mid Michigan, but here we are.

Rare bird in UK, so happy to get to see these beautiful birds. Not easy to photograph, as light never seemed to be good. But will give it another try if possible
