My first ever visit to Cheltenham Races today (Fri 14/03/2025) and, well, what a baptism of fire that turned out to be! A popular event with bus enthusiasts, there is a bombardment of buses, coaches and minicoaches coming from all directions. There are 3 main coach parks (situated some distance from one another), a compound for Nat Ex / Johnsons / Marchants coaches, plus the makeshift bus station for the Stagecoach shuttle buses! Here is a selection of what I saw - next year I will be more organised!!

Raucous Races! with Enter Edem on a sunny Leicester park last Saturday. Lots of fun was had by all. With Charlotte Parker & Tim Baker

This weekend I had the chance to go see and photograph car races on ice at the Capital City Speedway near Ottawa Ontario Canada. It was fun. Cant wait to go back with my photo meetup group...

Our word for inspiration this week at Take a Word is FISH and that reminded of the perfect day I spent last week at the races. There was horse racing in the morning followed by giraffe racing and then after lunch the fish racing began. Puffing and blowing and quite red in the face a great brute of a fish came up from behind, but alas to no avail, as first one and then the second lady glided over the finish line. And I won a fiver!

One of the finest attractions at the Eastern Idaho State Fair is the Indian Relay Races. The Championship purse was for $41,000. "This sport originated on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation over 100 years ago and many families that participated in the sport decades ago are still participating and passing this legacy on from generation to generation.

The Indian Relay teams consist of three horses and four team members (1rider, 1 catcher (Mugger), and 2 holders). The rider must complete a lap riding bareback with each horse. The rider must dismount without any help from their teammates and without losing control of their horses."

They had several heats during the week before the finals on Saturday. The top team was in the lead and the rider fell from his mount on the last round. He wasn't injured, but it was very intense and had the crowd going wild with excitement! If you haven't seen one of these races, it is fascinating and fun to watch!

The annual Cheltenham Festival usually attracts about 200,000 racegoers and visitors to the Cotswolds town over four days in mid March. This sees Stagecoach West loaning more than 60 double-deckers from other Stagecoach subsidiaries for use on frequent services that link the Railway Station and the Town Centre with Racecourse.

Vehicles are also hired from smaller operators, such as Marchants, and in 2014, North Somerset Coaches provided their preserved Bristol VR VDV 134S.

She is from a batch of 11 new to Western National in 1977 with ECW convertible open-top bodywork, and spent 20 years operating for Southern National, under National Bus, Cawlett and FirstGroup ownership. In 2003, she transferred within First to the Hampshire & Dorset subsidiary, and then passed to a preservationist in 2009. Chepstow Classic Buses operated her between 2010 and 2013, and then sold her to the owner of North Somerset Coaches. She now carries the Thomas Hardy name and green and cream livery that was applied by Southern National, and looks superb.

I captured her emerging from St George's Place, returning empty from the Racecourse to the Railway Station to collect another load of racegoers.

Local History Lesson:

The St. Paul building was the first skyscraper built in New York at 220 Broadway in 1898. Karl Bitter, designed the facade of this building which included 3 huge statues made of Indiana limestone. These statues, were named “The Races of Man” and represented the African-American, Asian and Caucasian races working together as they appeared to hold the skyscraper on their backs.

However, in the 1950s, plans were made to construct a new modern skyscraper on the site. The Western Electric Corporation held a competition among cities for a plan to preserve and display these statues. Indianapolis presented the winning plan and was awarded these statues and placed them in Holliday Park.

The Great Northern steeplechase is one of the highlights of the calendar at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland. I spotted this bunch/gaggle/cluster/herd(??) of keen racegoers in the stands and was having so much fun photographing them I failed to realise I had a winning punt in my pocket until well after the race.

The Vancouver Sun Run, sponsored by The Vancouver Sun newspaper, is a 10-kilometre road running event held in Vancouver each year on the third (sometimes the fourth) Sunday in April since 1985. It is one of the largest road races in North America.
