Birds in the snow. While I post these photos it is snowing again for a total of about 4 plus inches since last night on top of 3 inches that was one the ground when I took this photo. IMG_1302

Quabbin Reservoir, Belchertown, Massachusetts

Near the parking lot of the Enfield Overlook, I first noticed what appeared to be a large ball of fur on the grass area nearby. It ignored me and continued to munch away on the grass.

A widely distributed bird seen mostly in open habitats close to water. It is a richly coloured, slender bird. It is predominantly green; with face having a narrow blue patch with a black eye stripe, yellow and brown throat. The tail is blue, from which it derives its name. They breed mostly in river valleys, where they nest by tunneling into loamy sand banks.

Another image of tombs and commemorative slabs in the Tower (belfry) from that fascinating place, Jerpoint Abbey. It is believed that St. Nicholas (the original Santa Claus) was brought by two Crusader knights from Myra, Turkey to Jerpoint. The table tomb and slabs are of the Butler family and other powerful families of the area, who used the ruins as a burial site. The Butler family were leased the monastery after the great Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII in 1542.

My first play with a Canon R7 at Catcott today... (Thanks Steve for letting me have a go with your new toy).

An un-tweaked image, just converted to JPEG at 95% quality in 'Fastone image viewer', a bit of a revelation. Nice colours and detail, eye-tracking and focus locking jolly useful for composition of a static subject like this one. Coped with the whites very well. So mostly all good at f8... things were a bit different at f5.6, very soft around the gills, but to be expected with the lens-TC combo s'pose.

As for birds in flight, it worked well when a gull flew straight in and over, but quite a high miss rate when a few egrets flew across left to right at near and middle distances and with reeds in the background, I guess this is just a setting thing though. I'm sure this was more down to me than the camera, which has more buttons, knobs and wheels than your average TV remote. No idea what I was pressing or what they did, or why I was even pressing them.

Nice to have a bucket load of extra pixels to play with too.

I'm sure with a little time, this digital beast will be mastered, and I'll find a few settings that avoid shutter shock and roll syndrome that will work well for static, macro and in flight shots.... In the meantime, I'll just have to rely on field craft and my trusty old 7D Mkii.

R7 Now on the Christmas list. :@)

First outing to the Hunter Wetlands Center, Shortland, NSW; Australia with my r7.

Went there with long time friend and fellow flickr tog (and r7 user!) Joe Micallef.

Conditions were a bit tricky with moderate winds and harsh light; but came away with a couple of keepers including this....

Hope you like it!
