Last night, Grizzly 399 was struck by a car and killed. After 28 years, she had become an icon in Grand Teton National Park and the Greater Yellowstone area. It's always unfortunate when any animal is killed by a vehicle, but especially sad to see her go out this way. Grizzly 399 was the first grizzly bear I ever encountered and photographed. She was the oldest living offspring-producing grizzly bear in the area. Her legacy survives through her offspring and the many other grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Area.
