Samual Johnson was a fascinating man who left a trail of greatness. From writing the first English dictionary, to a legacy of quotable sound bites.
Of course, without the genius of Boswell, Johnson would be far less fascinating of a character.
There is too much irony in this for me to handle. The title is a quote by my art history prof when describing a distressed female artist and the limitations that were brought to her by modernity. Too quotable to go unquoted.
The Ogilvy & Mather office is totally fancy. Our first speaker here worked at Ogilvy in NYC for 40 years before moving to China. He's infinitely quotable.
"You're managing growth, and it's as crazy as you read about in the newspapers."
"The price of working in China is proving that you're committed to being here."
"People believe here. People believe in the American Dream."
"Here, everybody is living better than their parents did. Everybody."
"You can feel the future here."
"There are too many people that believe the China hype."
"Beauty for some provides escape, who gain a happiness in eyeing the gorgeous buttocks of the ape or Autumn sunsets exquisitely dying."

Joss Whedon and company have made it into the halls of the quotable next to the likes of Einstein, Diogenes the Cynic, and Oscar Wilde. It's about time!
Yes, I realize the quote was originally two people in dialogue rather than a single statement, but it still rules.

“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.”
It is commonly mistaken that Franklin once said, “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” However, Franklin apparently did not like beer very much and was much more of a wine lover. The quote originally came from a letter that Franklin wrote to his friend André Morellet while he was in France. He stated,
“Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards, and which incorporates itself with the grapes to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy!”

Although Franklin does love wine, here, he may be referring to the greatness of God and the wonders of the rain and the vineyards, rather than the greatness of wine. However, either way, the quote never had anything to do with beer.
It is still unknown who started this rumor, or when his words got twisted since it it so hard to trace the roots to a rumor that started so long ago. However, according to beer.about.com/od/historyofbeer, the rumor may have spread so broadly because so many people commonly use the quote, and after hearing it so often, it is automatically is believed to be true. Also, since Franklin is known to have a satirical side to him, it would not be preposterous to believe that he may have said such a thing. However, today the false quote is still printed on-shirts all around the world.

Notable Quotables at the 1920 Series, Brooklyn. The Lannins had owned the Red Sox and sold the team to Harry Frazee in 1917, who was then later infamous for selling Babe Ruth to the Yankees to finance his musical _No, No, Nanette_. Mr Lannin died eight years later after a fall from a ninth story window, believed to have been accidental, since he was worth $7m at the time.
When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, 'I used everything you gave me'.

GST Eastern Voles Christmas gathering at Flitton Moor
19/12/2017
Hi All & Tim
May I add my thanks to you all and wish you a happy Christmas and lots of good Voling together in 2018. I cannot wait. All those bonfires, cakes and sarcastic humour.
I thought I would be clever and write a piece about Tuesday incorporating some relevant quotes but the effort has quite overtaken me. So here instead are a few lines from a very wise & quotable Englishman .
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour.
I loved her against reason, against promise, against peace, against hope, against happiness, against all discouragement that could be.
Never close your lips to those whom you have already opened your heart.
There are books of which the backs and covers are by far the best parts.
We forge the chains we wear in life.
No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.
There are dark shadows on the earth, but its lights are stronger in the contrast.
The pain of parting is nothing to the joy of meeting again.
Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts.
The whole difference between construction and creation is exactly this: that a thing constructed can only be loved after it is constructed; but a thing created is loved before it exists.
There are loads more to choose from and I have to say I was very surprised, perhaps I should read some of his books instead of relying on BBC Childrens Dramas from my earlier years when, hard to believe I was a sprog with hopes and the occasional dream, many of which have been far exceeded in life.
My snaps from Flitton are as usual at www.flickr.com/photos/pitzys_pyx/

Hi All,
Many thanks for all your hard work at Flitton Moor on Tuesday. We were slightly down on the usual numbers but it didn’t stop you getting a whole lot done! I know David was pleased with the result and in his own words:
Thanks to all those who turned out on Tuesday at Flitton Moor - you did an amazing job as always.
Re fencing: I was expecting at the very most that half of the fence would be completed - and you did 2 thirds of it. Well done. The FoFM will finish it shortly in the new year.
Thanks also to those who manned the fire - and dragged brash to it. Almost all the was cut down was burnt.
And a special mention to the 6 hardy souls who spent the morning digging nettles.
A Merry Christmas to all, and a healthy 2018,
David
Thank you also to Lucinda, Sue and Erika for helping out with refreshments at lunchtime and to Malcolm and Jackie for such a lovely cake.
The next Tuesday task will be at Sandy Smith on the 2nd January and will be doing a bit more thinning/coppicing in the plantation near the bridge over the Flit plus maybe a few other jobs.
But there will also be a task at Maulden Heath next Thursday (28th) if anyone wishes to come along. The task will be clearing brash and regeneration in the Adder Field and, of course, having a fire; meet at the Picnic Area at 10am.
Thanks for all your hard work this year and I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and Happy New Year!
