The Walensee, also known as Lake Walen or Lake Walenstadt from Walenstadt, is one of the larger lakes in Switzerland, with about two thirds of its area in the Canton of St. Gallen and about one third in the Canton of Glarus. Other towns and villages at the lake include Weesen, Quinten, Quarten, and Murg.

The Glarus Alps are a mountain range in central Switzerland. They are bordered by the Uri Alps and the Schwyz Alps to the west, the Lepontine Alps to the south, the Appenzell Alps to the northeast. Wikipedia

A bunch of daffodils with Oostkerke's imposing Saint Quinten's Church in the background. The 7th century Guthago - said to be the son of either an Irish or a Scottish king - lived as a pelgrim nearby and converted people to christianity. He was buried in Oostkerke and after miracles took place near his grave his relics were placed in the existing church. In 1159 he became Saint Guthago after being canonized.

The flat towers of three villages near Bruges, Oostkerke, Damme and Lissewege, are quite unique.

From Oostkerke Castle you can best see how impressive Oostkerke's Saint Quinten's Church is! It makes the whitewashed cottages of the village seem even smaller.

In the 12th century Oostkerke was a large parish, so much so that 8 'assistant' churches were created in surrounding villages. This was a time when Bruges and many villages in the area were prosperous and had harbours, but in the 14th century the "Zwin" started silting up so traffic to the harbours became impossible.

In the heyday of Oostkerke there were several mills, now there is one operational windmill left.

These days Oostkerke has circa 600 inhabitants. I believe the church is so big because of the prosperous past of this now quiet village.

Oostkerke is considered to be one of the most beautiful villages of Flanders.

Lamentation by Quinten Metsijs

In the early sixteenth century, Quentin Metsijs was widely considered Antwerp’s most prominent painter. It will come as no surprise then that the prestigious carpenter’s guild turned to him to commission a new altarpiece. Metsijs undoubtedly fulfilled the expectations of his patrons with this painting full of exquisite light and colour. But they were not the only ones to be delighted by this painting. In 1577, King Philip II of Spain and the Queen of England, Elizabeth I, declared their respective intention to acquire the painting. The guild was inclined to accept one of the proposals. Maerten de Vos, however, managed to convince the Antwerp town council to acquire the painting and keep it in Antwerp.

The composition clearly draws on Rogier van der Weyden’s Descent of the Cross.

The water well of Quinten Matsijs

The maker of the well, Quinten Matsijs was a blacksmith and painter. He lived from 1466 to 1530 and was a founder of the Antwerp School. The Antwerp School is a term for the artists active in Antwerp, first during the 16th century when the city was the economic center of the Low Countries, and then during the 17th century when it became the artistic stronghold of the Flemish Baroque paintings under Peter Paul Rubens. Quinten Matsijs's work is especially religious and he is praised for his use of color and carefully balanced compositions, His paintings hang in museums and in private collections all over the world.

Matsijs also made the "putkevie" (a decorated wrought iron gate on a well) on top of the well at the Handschoenmarkt that depicts the legend of Silvius Brabo and Druon Antigoon. The inscription on the well reads: ‘Dese putkevie werd gesmeed door Quinten Matsijs. De liefde maeckte van den smidt eenen schilder.’

The story goes that Matsijs when he was not a painter yet but a blacksmith, had fallen in love with Catherina Heyns. Her father was also a blacksmith but thought that just another blacksmith was not good enough for his daughter. So Quinten Matsijs retrained himself into a painter and turned out so well that he finally could marry Catherine. The words on the well-meaning; "The ironwork for this well was forged by Quinten Metsijs. Love makes the blacksmith a painter."
