Père Louis (PAWI in Barbados) is a dwarf-growing variety, fruiting early. The plant from which the budwood was taken is a round-headed dwarf tree, furnished with branches to the ground. I remember receiving the Père Louis in Demerara from St. Lucia and this had much the same habit. I think that the dwarf, early-fruiting habit is inherent. I do not think that the stocks used have anything to do with it, because they are taken indiscriminately and when sufficiently large are grafted upon."

----------------- J. F. Waby, acting curator.

"The Pere Louis bears very young, has no fiber nor any sourness at the core, and the flavor is nearly as good as that of the Julie, which is the best for flavor I have ever eaten.

HOW DID THIS MANGO COME TO THE USA ?

The Fruit & Spice Park received (2) two small grafted Mango trees for planting on the park property. By the time both trees were planted, the name tag of one of them went missing. Subsequent searches by all concerned yielded no results. So, Park Director Chris Rollins and his staff decided to name the missing-tag mango "not OTT" since the other tree was tagged "OTT".

Cogshall belongs to a new generation of Florida mangoes called the 'Condominium' mangoes.

The trees are dwarf to a height of about 10 ft but they yield regular-sized quality mangoes. These are for those mango lovers that live in high rise condominiums in one of the colder states of the US. The owners keep the potted trees in the balcony or in the backyard during the summer months and bring them inside for freeze protection during the colder months.

'Nam Doc Mai' is among the best dessert mangos of Thailand, with an exceptional appearance and eating quality.

The fruit are long, slender and sigmoid, weighing from 12 to 16 oz.

The ripe fruit range from a greenish- to canary-yellow, rarely with a reddish blush on the sun-exposed shoulder.

The flesh is soft and juicy, with a sweet and aromatic flavor. 'Nam Doc Mai' has no fiber.

In Thailand and throughout much of Asia, it encompasses what is most desired in terms of versatility and quality.

It is used while mature green for dipping in sauces and for making sweet preserves and pickles.

When ripe, they have a smooth, silky texture and extreme sweetness and bouquet.

It has found a home in the Caribbean, where it grows and fruits well.

"Pickering is a “condo mango” that has everything for those with limited space, and it also remains a top selection for those looking for a new variety to put on the back forty. They naturally have a bushy, compact growth habit, and can be maintained in a container at just six feet. The fruit has a firm flesh with a fantastic coconut/mango flavor and no objectionable fiber. They are typically 0.75-1.5 lbs, and they ripen in June."

According to Fairchild Garden,

‘Jean Ellen’ was selected as a home garden variety due to its early season, heavy production and its multiple bearing habit. The fruits are 300 g, oblong to lanceolate with a lemon yellow color. There is no blush to the fruit. The skin is smooth and typically has numerous corky lenticels and due to its habit of fruiting during the windy Spring, there are typically visible abrasions on the surface of the fruit. The flesh is an opaque yellow and there is a small amount of rough fiber near to the seed. The flavor is classified in the ‘Alphonso’ class, with a sweet, simple flavor of tropical spice. The tree grows easily and is semi-dwarf and precocious. The tree and fruit are moderately tolerant of disease and there are typically multiple blooms during the year. The season is from April to June in South Florida.

‘San Felipe’ is an eye-stopping beauty from western Cuba. She has many characteristics of the ‘Haden’ of Florida, although she is larger at nearly 1 ½ lb., with a bright yellow background color, an apple-red blush overlaid by a blanket of white dots. The tree is vigorous, yet productive and a consistent producer. The flesh color is a deep yellow to orange and the flavor is rich, sweet and spicy, one of the truly classic mango flavors of the world. ‘San Felipe’ is perfect for the home gardener in search of the taste of old Cuba, and for bragging rights among his neighbors.

According to Fairchild Garden;

Frances Hargrave is a ‘Haden’ seedling. The fruit is oblong with a pointed nose and a weight of 16.5 oz (468 g). The color is aureolin yellow from base to apex and has a smooth skin. The flesh is of the same color with no fiber and a delicate flavor of vanilla and peach with a distinct coconut aroma. The tree grows slowly and responds quite positively to horticultural management, forming a dense, dark green canopy with large, healthy leaves. The yields are excellent, ripening during the early season in Florida. The tree, bloom and fruit have excellent disease tolerance. Fruit has excellent stage, with good potential for South Florida.

The Mango ‘Ameeri’ was found in 1900 in Bombay (now Mumbai), India by Mr. N.J. Tata, an wealthy Indian Industrialist and USDA collaborator, and was sent to Dr. Fairchild in Washington, D.C.

In 1932, the mango was transferred to Chapman Field near Miami, Florida. Its was planted next to another mango ‘Cambodiana’ that was gathered by Fairchild in 1902 from Vietnam.

According to Fairchild Garden,

"‘Prieto’ is another heirloom cultivar from Cuba, an island rich in mango diversity. The fruit are small in size, ranging from 8 to 10 oz. The skin color is a dark green - the green so dark in fact that it earned the name “black”, or ‘Prieto’ in Spanish. Beneath this dark green exterior lies a deep orange flesh, and considerable fiber. However, one must not let this stop you. The fruit can be rolled on a table to release the juice for drinking. A rich, sweet and spicy flavor is the reward - well worth the effort to be sure. The tree can be maintained at a height and spread of no more than 12 ft. ‘Prieto’ will not be found in United States or European grocery stores, as it is not exported and is not commonly planted in modern times for commercial use. However, it remains an important local market mango in Cuba and can now it can take a prominent spot in your home garden."

HOW DID THIS MANGO COME TO THE USA

This mango was named after Mr. Charlie Provost of the Georgianna section of South Merritt Island, Florida on whose family property the tree had been growing since possibly the 40's.

Mr. Provost personally provided budwood from his tree to Dr. Richard Campbell of FTBG who in turn donated MIA 36671 in 2008.

Thanks for looking guys

Haden is the mango from which almost all of the Florida mangoes have been derived. Haden in turn is a descendent of India's Mulgoba mango, considered the mother of all of the Florida mangoes.

Haden offers the rare combination of stunning colors, no fiber and exceptional taste. However, it is highly susceptible to the Anthracnose disease. Mango research in Florida and elsewhere had since been directed towards developing Anthracnose-resistant cultivars.
