A suitcase wheel? A shopping trolley wheel? Could it be anything else? What happened to it? How did it break? How did its owner feel? Upset? Angry? Indifferent? "The photograph begs a long list of questions but answers none of them. We are forced to accept what we cannot know and focus on what we can see:" a broken wheel left by the side of the road which now combines with the vehicle behind to animate this photograph. The quote is from the book Street Photography Now
As some of you know I have been keenly interested in a movement, started by Jay Cross, called the unbook. I have gotten some questions about how the unbook differs from a traditional book, so I thought I would answer them here.
The driving forces behind the movement are the acceleration of business change and the inability of traditional publishing to keep up. With new technologies such as print-on-demand and online marketplaces, authors can now publish books, in both electronic and print formats, at the push of a button. The unbook, due to these factors, operates in a fundamentally different way than the traditional book.
A traditional book is released in editions. When a work is revised or updated, a new edition is released. These revised or updated editions usually offer small, incremental changes, such as a new preface or introduction, a new chapter, or small changes to the content.
An unbook is more like software:
1. An unbook is never finished, but rather continually updated, based on feedback from users andtheir evolving needs.
2. An unbook is released in versions. As in open source software, version 1.0 of an unbook is a significant milestone, indicating that it is stable and reliable enough for use by the general public. The significance of a new release is indicated by the size of the gap: For example, the difference between 1.1 and 1.1.3 is minor, while the difference between 1.1 and 2.0 is major.
3. An unbook is supported by a community of users who share their experiences and best practices with each other, and help each other troubleshoot problems encountered in their practice areas. An unbook’s community is a very real part of the unbook’s development team.
I have published an unbook, Marks and Meaning, to catalogue my continuing efforts in the field of visual thinking and information design, and to develop a user community focused on that discipline.
An unbook is mindware: software for the mind: And in the case of Marks and Meaning, my hope and intent is to develop not just software, but an operating system which improves on our current thinking models and makes our minds more useful and usable.
In the same way that graphical user interfaces (GUIs) improved the usability of computing devices, I hope, with your help, to develop a graphical operating system for the mind.
The field of information design is developing so rapidly that I believe an unbook is the only way to do this.
I believe that the unbook form has real potential, especially for emerging disciplines like information design, such as user experience design, agile software development, social media, and knowledge management, as well as established disciplines which are undergoing significant change (finance? government?).
To support these efforts, Jay and I have set up a website to support the unbook movement and provide a comprehensive catalogue of available titles. Please take a moment to visit theunbook.com/ and leave us a note! And if you are working on an unbook or plan to start one, let us know so we can add it to the uncatalogue.
Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence (Live in Berlin)
Depeche Mode are an English electronic band that formed in 1980 in Basildon, Essex. The group consists of founders Dave Gahan (lead vocals, occasional songwriter since 2005), Martin Gore (guitar, keyboards, vocals, main songwriter since 1982), and Andy Fletcher (keyboards, bass guitar). Depeche Mode released their debut album Speak & Spell in 1981, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Original band member Vince Clarke (keyboards, guitar, main songwriter from 1980 to 1981), left the band after the release of the album, leaving the band as a trio to record A Broken Frame, released the following year. Gore took over the lead songwriting duties and, later in 1982, Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, bass guitar, occasional songwriter) officially joined the band to fill Clarke's spot, establishing a line up that would continue for the next 13 years. Depeche Mode have been a trio again since 1995, when Wilder left.

Dan Maffei of Transcore answers questions about The Toll Roads' new all-electronic toll collection electronic equipment at a press conference held today to mark the launch of The Toll Roads' three new ExpressAccount types.
The Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) today introduced three new ExpressAccount™ payment options, which give customers more choices on how to pay tolls. TCA, which operates The Toll Roads (SRs 73, 133, 241 and 261) will remove all cash toll collection from the 51-mile toll road network in May 2014.
The New ExpressAccounts – New Ways to Pay Tolls Without Stopping
With the new, transponder-free ExpressAccounts, images of a vehicle’s license plate taken on The Toll Roads are linked to an account and the appropriate toll is collected. When customers sign up for an ExpressAccount, they may choose one of three payment options:
•Prepaid – Customers open an account with a prepaid balance and tolls are deducted from the amount whenever they use The Toll Roads.
•Charge – At the end of each day, customers tolls are charged to the credit card on file for each trip on The Toll Roads.
•Invoice – Customers are sent an invoice at the close of the month for tolls incurred that month; no need to use a credit card or link a bank account to your account. This account type includes an invoice fee.
ExpressAccounts can only be used on The Toll Roads (SRs 73, 133, 241 and 261). And the toll is on average 20 percent higher than the toll paid by a FasTrak customer.
FasTrak: Still Lowest Tolls
Customers with FasTrak, which uses transponder technology affixed to a vehicle’s windshield, will continue to pay the lowest tolls and may be used on all toll roads, lanes and bridges throughout California. FasTrak customers won't have to make any changes to their accounts when cash collection ceases on The Toll Roads.

Question Mark Butterfly, This rather plain looking butterfly is a lifer for me.
This is the light phase of the Question Mark, so the signature Question Mark in the back wing, from which it gets its name and is so visible in the dark phase is very difficult to see. Question marks are a moderately common woodland butterfly.
They are definitely the most difficult butterflies to photograph that I have ever encountered, Firstly they do not feed on nectar so they do not visit flowers, secondly they live on the edge of woods and will retreat ligh into the trees if disturbed, thirdly they are extremely skittish - and generally will not let a person get closer than ten or twently feet. Lastly they only sit for a few seconds before they flit away. So although I have seen Question Marks on several occasions, I have never even come close to getting a shot until this.- next time I get the spectacular black orange and violet upper wing.
Question Marks are a member of the Comma family of forest butterflies.

The Trump Budget cuts the Bureau of Land Management by 10 percent and significantly increases funding for coal mining projects across the United States.
We need to invest in renewable energy and protect our public lands, not sell them to polluters. Our Energy and Mineral Resources Subcommittee met on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, to question Trump officials on their climate change ignorance and their role in the administration's corruption.

The Palace of the Dukes of Braganza is a medieval palace and former residence of the first Dukes of Braganza, located in the historical centre of Guimarães, Portugal.
It was initiated between 1420 and 1422 by Afonso, Count of Barcelos, the illegitimate son of John I of Portugal, and future Duke of Bragança in a Burgundy architectural style, reflecting the taste acquired during his travel through Europe.
His descendants occupied the palace until the Dukes of Braganza moved to Vila Viçosa, abandoning the palace and the 16th Century marked the beginning of a period of ruin. During the 19th century the degradation worsened, when the local population used the palace as a quarry.
During the Estado Novo regime (1926 to 1974), a controversial restoration influenced by nationalist values and based on observation of similar palaces contemporary of this one in several European countries recovered the Palace, implying a grandeur that may not have existed. In this epoch it was used as one of the official residences for the President of the Republic.
Today, part of the building is used as a museum where beautiful Persian and Flemish tapestries can be seen as well as paintings and other historical objects.

“Illiam Dhone: A Manx Historical Drama which won the Chruinnaght Gold Medal, 1924”
by J. J. Keen
Published by Yn Chruinnaght Vanninagh Ashoonagh, as “Publication No. 1”, in 1926
Printed by S. K. Broadgate & Co. Ltd., Douglas
A seven-scene play on the life, death and aftermath of William Christian (“Illiam Dhone”).The play is a masterful handling of the contentious question of the traitor/nationalist status of Illiam Dhone in handing the island over to the Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War. Kneen manages to leave the question still open in the play, despite making Dhone a very strong and heroic character.
That J. J. Kneen (1873 - 1938) was perhaps the leading Manx linguist as well as scholar and nationalist of his day would not come as a surprise after reading this play. He had a great many articles and translations to him name, although his most famous work is probably the translation the Manx National Anthem into Manx.
Kneen was a keen playwright also, writing many plays on Manx topics and themes. This play of ‘Illiam Dhone’ is a curious instance in that Kneen deals with Dhone and the complex issues surrounding him masterfully while giving the play a very strange format - effectively splitting it into three parts:
(1) the Manx “rebellion” (in which Dhone does not appear throughout the first scene, when the Derby Monarchist rule is overthrown),
(2) the arrest, trial and execution of Dhone, eleven years later,
(3) the story of Dhone son’s overcoming a rival to marry the daughter of one of Dhone’s accusers.
It should be clear what a daring opening act it is to leap straight into the rebellion, but also what a curious final act Kneen gives the play. It almost feels as if the play would be better titled, ‘Illiam Dhone and the Curse of the Clan Christian’.
Some of the characterisation is wonderful, particularly the interplay of Lady Molineux and Bishop Rutter in Scene I, where Rutter’s almost camp reactions to her outspoken attacks of the Roundheads is brilliant when set against the raucous songs that are left to us by the historical Samuel Rutter (Bishop 1660-1662/3). But this is nothing to the brilliant handling of Dhone himself, who is heroic, clearly drawn and yet vague at the same time. This is perhaps shown in one of the key lines in the play when Dhone is refusing to try to escape from the troops out to arrest him:
Christian:
Were it a crime to be a patriot, then am I a criminal indeed. I ever placed my country before aught else.
[...]
‘Twould be as well for a mouse to struggle against a lion, as for our puny little Isle to attempt to dictate to the armed forces if the English State.

Here's an art history question: What are the elements of this design called? I call the overall style Baroque. The style features frilly edges that resemble foliage. They're everywhere in Baroque decorative arts, invariably as part of an asymmetrical design. Does the foliage motif with frilly edges have a name? Tallinn, Estonia.
