1st Lieutenant John A. Quaid was a paratrooper with the 508th PIR who were based in Northern Ireland in late 1943 and early 1944. The above photo is possibly in Northern Ireland but more likely at Wollaton Park, Nottingham where the 508th moved to after their short stay in Northern Ireland.
Known as Jack to his family, he was initially listed as Missing In Action on D-Day, 6 June 1944. His remains were later recovered and his official date of death was determined to be June 23, 1944. According to the personal diary of Lt Ralph DeWeese, also of the 508th PIR, he had been watching Quaid's plane from his own aircraft as they approached the Normandy drop zone:
"Quaid's plane was in a hot spot due to the fact the tabs had blown off the equipment bundle lights slung under the aircraft belly and the bundle lights had come on. That left the plane a target in the sky and everything was zeroed in on him. I thought for sure that they were going to get it."
"We circled over Etienville three times and I knew the planes were lost. You can imagine how anxious we were to jump because I knew we couldn't fly around much longer without getting hit. The flak and machine-gun fire was worse and it is hard to realize how those planes can fly through it. I was watching Quaid's plane and saw some men jump".
Later Deweese apparently learned that "Lt. Quaid had raided a pillbox and the Germans had surrendered and were coming out with their hands up. The fourth came out firing a Schmeisser (sub-machinegun) and killed him.

* Salute *
-Few individuals significantly alter the course of history.
-Fewer still modify the map of the world.
-Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state.
*Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three.*

Note: The two men nearest are dressed in M1941 jackets and leggings above their boots, all non-standard field items for airborne troops. A number of other period photos of the 505th PIR in Northern Ireland also show men wearing these items.

The grave of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan, in the basement of Mazar e Quaid right underneath the symbolic grave up on the attic open to visitors.
Celebrating our 73rd Pakistan Day, getting ready for next general elections to elect our 14th Parliament, the nation needs to revisit the Founder’s vision for Pakistan, simple yet comprehensive:
If we want to make this great State of Pakistan happy and prosperous we should wholly and solely concentrate on the well-being of the people, and especially of the masses and the poor.
We are starting in the days when there is no discrimination, no distinction between one community and another, no discrimination between one caste or creed and another. We are starting with this fundamental principle that we are all citizens and equal citizens of one State.
My guiding principle will be justice and complete impartiality, and I am sure that with your support and co-operation, I can look forward to Pakistan becoming one of the greatest nations of the world.
Excerpts from Jinnah’s address to the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan, Aug 11, 1947
Mazar-e-Quaid (Urdu: مزار قائد), Jinnah Mausoleum or the National Mausoleum refers to the tomb of the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It is an iconic symbol of Karachi throughout the world. The Quaid-e-Azam House and Museum, earlier known as the Flagstaff House, is located on the Fatima Jinnah Road in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan, and like almost all other houses on the road, was originally owned by a Parsi business tycoon.
Father of the Nation, Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, purchased the house on the eve of Independence and later Madar-i-Millat Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah lived for many years here.
The building was designed by architect Moses Somake. This probably is Somake's first known building which on one hand is modest and, on the other charming.
The bungalow, which was later designated as the Flagstaff House because of the residence of the General Officer Commanding, is situated at the most exclusive area of the Staff Lines. It is surprising that an architect little known at that time was asked to design this building.
The house was probably built in 1890. Somake had a habit of signing his buildings by inscribing his name in an obscure place that could be found with little effort. In the case of the Flagstaff House, it is etched on an inner face of the porch. Somake's work on the Flagstaff House was confined to the main double storey bungalow, while the annex was added to the premises at a later date. Somake lavished his attention on the façade facing the Bonus Road, which was the main thoroughfare at the time, probably due to a tight budget.
The frontage has a symmetrical arrangement, with two wings flanking the central porch that carries the projecting part of the verandah. Simple arcading, carved pilasters and sloping roofs using red clay tiles are the architectural ingredients of this attractive bungalow. An unusual element is the introduction of semi-circular balconies, which also appear in the City Courts Building built at a later date. Finely chiselled and carved features embellish the front façade, while the rest of the building is in a hammer-dressed masonry.
Quaid-i-Azam visited the Flagstaff House in 1943, liked it and showed interest in acquiring it. Although owned by a Parsi business magnate Sohrab Kavasji, it had been requisitioned as the residence of General Hind, GOC.
The deed of purchase in the name of "Mr Mohammed Ali Jinnah, Barrister-at-Law, Bombay" was registered in March 1944. After the partition, the bungalow was furnished with the belongings and furnishings of the Quaid that had been brought from his Delhi and Bombay residences, and was kept in readiness, to be occupied by him, possibly after his retirement.
After the death of the Father of the Nation in 1948, Fatima Jinnah lived in the house from 1948 to 1964. Due to prime location several commercial organisations were interested in acquiring the property not for conservation but for demolition and constructing high buildings. Besides a number of public sector companies also tried to acquire the premises to erect a new building thereon.
The bungalow lay neglected till 1985 when, as a result of the pleas by the Heritage Foundation, it was acquired by the Government of Pakistan; restored and declared a national monument the Quaid-i-Azam House Museum. It now houses furniture, relics, and other items of the Father of the Nation.
