The Oasi of Quadris is situated northwest of the centre of Fagagna. Within the European network of Natura 2000, it is classificated as natural protected area.
The area of approsimately 100 hectars owes its name to the artificial ponds once used for the quarrying of peat and clay.
With a various natural habitats, the oasis boasts numerous species of floating plants and parts of hydrophilous wood with weeping willows, black alders and Englilsh oats.
Small and large mammals and a rich population of birds live here.
In 1989 the oasis was established as a Fauna Center and currently houses 69 white storks (42 free and 27 in the aviary) and about 80 Northern Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita), an endangered species.
The Centre' permanent exhibition is dedicated to the reintroduction projects of these two species.
The centre was founded in 1985 with the initial aim of working for the conservation and the reintroduction of threatened breediing species of birds (in Italy or Europe) such as the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) in Italy , or at a global level, such as the case of the critically endangered Northern Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita).
The EFC cooperates with other conservation institutions working wordldwide.
The "Quadris" area is so-called in the Friuli language for the square shape of numerous clay pits, which are now flooded but in the past were excavated for brick production.
The wildlife sanctuary has been created on an area once used as a dump; it has been completely restored and remodelled from a naturalistic point of view.

E' ARRIVATA LA CICOGNA
La cicogna bianca (Ciconia ciconia) è considerata simbolo di fortuna e prosperità già dall’antichità. La leggenda secondo cui porterebbe i bambini nelle case, tenendoli in un fagottino poi fatto calare nei comignoli, è nata nei Paesi del Centro-nord Europa. In quelle zone, anche in primavera, quando il numero delle nascite era maggiore, i camini restavano accesi a lungo nelle case dove c’era un neonato.
Le cicogne, che proprio in quel periodo tornano in Europa dai Paesi africani, approfittavano del tepore in uscita dai comignoli per fare il nido. Non era quindi la cicogna a portare i bambini ma, al contrario, erano questi, con il calore che regnava nella loro casa, a richiamare le cicogne.

THE STORK HAS ARRIVED
The white stork (Ciconia ciconia) has been considered a symbol of luck and prosperity since ancient times. The legend according to which she would bring children into homes, keeping them in a bundle then lowered down the chimneys, was born in the countries of Central and Northern Europe. In those areas, even in spring, when the number of births was higher, the fireplaces remained lit for a long time in the houses where there was a newborn.
The storks, which at that time returned to Europe from African countries, took advantage of the warmth coming out of the chimneys to build their nests. Therefore, it was not the stork that brought the children but, on the contrary, it was these, with the warmth that reigned in their home, that attracted the storks.

He was the guardian of the stork station "Oasi dei Quadris".
He arrived here 3 years ago, on april 2020, wild and scary, and even if after all this time he let me get closer, he never allowed me to touch him.
He started stealing the food of the ibises, then he was regularly fed by the volunteers and the municipal workers.
As soon as I gained his trust, I would have loved to take him home.... but two days ago he lost his life hit by a car on the road on front of the Oasi...
Le lunéa "quadritranche" comme on l'appelle, en provenance de Luxembourg -4251- et Strasbourg -4783- (les deux autres demi rames allant à Nice), approche de son terminus Port-Bou en s'inscrivant dans la célèbre courbe précédant la gare de Cerbère.

Poche opere nella storia della creatività dell'uomo hanno raggiunto l'effetto decorativo delle vetrate delle chiese e cattedrali sparse in tutta Europa. Questi "quadri contro luce", composti da frammenti, trasformano i raggi del sole in particelle lucenti, con giochi di suggestive trasparenze.

L’Oasi dei Quadris di Fagagna diventerà un giardino zoologico: via all’ampliamento dell’area
L’Oasi è diventata nel corso del tempo un punto di riferimento per le iniziative di valorizzazione, comunicazione, diffusione della cultura ambientale e della conoscenza della biodiversità regionale.
Nell’Oasi si trovano circa un’ottantina di cicogne. Questo è il momento perfetto per andarle a vedere, in quanto la primavera, per questi animali, corrisponde al periodo degli amori. È durante l’estate, poi, che nascono i piccoli e le cicogne si fermano dalla loro migrazione per accudirli e insegnarli a volare. Nei mesi, da giugno ad agosto, le cicogne che nidificano all’interno dell’Oasi e nei suoi immediati dintorni raggiungono il centinaio di esemplari.

The Oasis of the Quadris in Fagagna will become a zoological garden: the area will be enlarged
Over time, the Oasis has become a reference point for initiatives to enhance, communicate, disseminate environmental culture and knowledge of regional biodiversity.
In the Oasis there are about eighty storks. This is the perfect time to go and see them, as spring, for these animals, corresponds to the mating season. It is during the summer, then, that the babies are born and the storks stop migrating to look after them and teach them to fly. In the months, from June to August, the storks that nest inside the Oasis and its immediate surroundings reach a hundred of specimens.

L’Oasi dei Quadris è inserita in una ampia zona a carattere paludoso che si trova a Nord Ovest di Fagagna. Il toponimo deriva dal nome dato ad alcune pozze d’acqua che ne costituiscono l’elemento caratteristico. Questi laghetti sono la testimonianza dell’escavazione dell’argilla e della torba iniziata nel 1700 dal Conte Asquini. Gli ambienti umidi dei Quadris sono molto ricchi di avifauna, ricordiamo fra tutti l’airone cenerino, la gallinella d’acqua, il martin pescatore ed il pendolino.
In questa area di sicuro interesse paesaggistico negli anni ‘80 grazie all’impegno del Comune di Fagagna e della Comunità Collinare è stata insediata una stazione sperimentale per la reintroduzione della cicogna bianca e ospitata una colonia di ibis eremita.

BLACK CAT TARGES ITS PREY.
The Oasi dei Quadris is inserted in a large marshy area located north-west of Fagagna. The toponym derives from the name given to some pools of water which constitute its characteristic element. These lakes bear witness to the excavation of clay and peat begun in the 1700s by Count Asquini. The humid environments of the Quadris are very rich in birdlife, we remember among all the gray heron, the moorhen, the kingfisher and the pendulum.
In this area of great scenic interest in the 1980s, thanks to the commitment of the Municipality of Fagagna and the Comunità Collinare, an experimental station was established for the reintroduction of the white stork and a colony of Northern Bald Ibises was hosted.

NIDO MATRIMONIALE.
La zona denominata Oasi dei Quadris, dall’estensione di circa 7 ettari, si trova a Nord-Ovest di Fagagna, nella biforcazione fra le due strade che portano a Majano e a Caporiacco. Il toponimo “Quadris“ deriva dal nome dato ad alcune pozze d’acqua dal margine quadrangolare che costituiscono l’ambiente più appariscente e caratteristico della zona, testimonianza dell’escavazione di argilla iniziata già a partire dal 1700. Gli ambienti umidi dei Quadris sono molto ricchi di avifauna, ricordiamo fra tutti l’airone cenerino, la gallinella d’acqua, il martin pescatore ed il pendolino.
L’Oasi dei Quadris è sorta alla fine degli anni ‘80, con il progetto per la reintroduzione in Italia della Cicogna Bianca. Questa specie infatti non nidificava più in Italia da decenni se non sporadicamente, preferendo le rotte migratorie spagnole (Stretto di Gibilterra) o del Medio Oriente (Israele e Sinai). Il riuscire a moltiplicare nel territorio di Fagagna questo trampoliere elegante e di grande significato educativo ha costituito per molti anni il motivo stesso dell’esistenza dell’Oasi.

The area called Oasi dei Quadris, with an extension of about 7 hectares, is located north-west of Fagagna, in the fork between the two roads leading to Majano and Caporiacco. The toponym "Quadris" derives from the name given to some pools of water with a quadrangular margin that constitute the most striking and characteristic environment of the area, evidence of the excavation of clay which began as early as 1700. The humid environments of the Quadris are very rich in avifauna, we remember among all the gray heron, the moorhen, the kingfisher and the pendolino.
The Quadris Oasis was born in the late 1980s, with the project for the reintroduction of the White Stork in Italy. In fact, this species no longer nested in Italy for decades if not sporadically, preferring the Spanish migratory routes (Strait of Gibraltar) or the Middle East (Israel and Sinai). Being able to multiply this elegant wader of great educational significance in the Fagagna area has been the very reason for the existence of the Oasis for many years.
