An early shot from this morning. We went out in search of migratory sparrows (LeConte's and Nelson's) with limited success, but the fall color was gorgeous and our typical winter sparrows (Swamp and Savannah) were out in quantity. Black-capped Chickadees eat large quantities of insect eggs, larvae and pupae (insects in the torpid stage), weevils, lice, sawflies, and other insects. They also feed on centipedes, snails, slugs, and spiders. The chickadee is one of the most important pest exterminators of the orchard or forest. The Black-Capped Chickadee hides seeds and other food items for later recovery during colder weather. Each item is placed in a different spot and a bird can remember the hiding places a month after caching the food.

Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short, thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they comprise the family Otariidae, eared seals, which contains six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. At the scene of the event we had a good meal of bread, tomatoes, cucumbers and chips. We used the time to sit down or just leave each other alone. It is a great gift when you are travelling together and can let go of each other. We were also able to enjoy the spring sunshine of Kazakhstan, took photos with our mobile phones and had a lot of fun simply spending the day and taking a few photographs as if by accident.
What else was there? We see three tracks and all three were in use. Behind us is a makeshift platform. The miners used to get off there to walk to the western entrance of the Bogatyr mine. The hills on the left are dead mountains; they are pure waste that can arise when mining hard coal in open-pit mines. Huge quantities, unbelievable amounts, and well suited to creating a completely unique landscape. And then?
Then the moment came, a drumming and rumbling sound rose from the depths of the valley, a sure sign of a hard-working 2TE10M. There she came, the old friend of the beautiful morning, dragging 64 loaded wagons with coal. What else can I say?
Again and again the thought of gratitude returns to my consciousness. It is good to have friends with whom such experiences and adventures are possible. Thanks and respect to our small, untested trio!

Snow geese have a tendency to move en masse, from the creek to a hill, or vice versa. Here's what they look like flying by.
I really don't get that one. First off, the inverse is absolutely a viable business model, and arguably the more successful one. Unless perhaps you're dealing with a bunch of elitist snobs who drive their Teslas to the art exhibition or the symphony opera, but those are a tiny minority, really. Generally speaking, the road to success is paved with mediocrity.
And more importantly, how come when it's about the supposedly really important things, quantity over quality suddenly seems to be the preferred modus operandi? Like years of life, and more specifically, human life. Any sick old dog with no hope for cure you'll put down as standard procedure, and you'll call it man's best friend, and that's how you treat it. Yet being born as a human you are obliged - as in literally, legally obliged - to carry on no matter what? People are too diverse to put a specific age on it, but at a certain state of decay let's call it, you're really nothing more than a showcase of how to do it wrong. It's a trade-off, really. Live fast, have fun, and die young, or get bored to death by a slow unfulfilling drag that just goes on and on and on. You can aim for either extreme or somewhere in between, which is probably where you'll end up no matter what. If at least they, as in the mainstream, were honest and said it's peer pressure and fear of lawsuits, and some vague subjective ideas of morality they couldn't put into convincing words if they wanted to. But that's not what they say. What they say is "because life is so incredibly valuable" you must keep yours no matter what, under any circumstance, for as long machine-assistedly possible. Forget humanly possible! Again, same question, what did your cats and dogs do right that they are let go when the time comes? Everybody has their reason to come here, fair enough; almost nobody has one to stay until their nuts fall off from old age.
And why is there not a single party you can vote for, that stands for a more appreciative view on death? Well. That last one actually might be quite easy to answer. It's because the state sees you as its property, as a cell of its organism. It wants you alive ultimately for more or less the same reason a farmer wants his cows alive. Which makes sense I guess, as long as they give milk – but not after that.
I wouldn't be surprised if such a party would actually win quite a few votes if someone were to found it. If not right now, then a handful of years down the road, when being alive really becomes more of a chore than it could possibly be worth. But then, who would bother trying make life better if they just could not bother at all?
To encourage people to compost their pumpkins, a city agency invited everyone to bring their pumpkins to a local park for a pumpkin parade. They lit up the pumpkins as the sun was going down.

Colorful rhythms in the breeze
Web strands shot during wind movement and under bright conditions provide an optical spectrum feast, due to waves of light being scattered by the silk - diffraction - speed of the shutter, and quantity of softness from a softly focused lens, i.e. not focused sharply on the web threads at any given moment.
Much of what I capture is by trial and error and a good deal of luck, not judgement, as I react spontaneously to these intriguing opportunities. The light however, has to be right.
Massive quantities of Yellow-rumped Warblers have arrived in Northeast Ohio coinciding with a large hatching of midges along Lake Erie. Just as the midges are an easy target for the warblers, the warblers are providing an easy target to local bird photographers. In trying to keep things interesting, I look for a spot that provides a nice setting and then wait for a bird to arrive and complete the composition. Fortunately, with so many birds present I don't have to wait very long. For this shot I found an area with a colorful, softly lit background and waited for the Yellow-rumped warbler to enter the space.

El Soplao is a cave located in the municipalities of Rionansa, Valdáliga and Herrerías in Cantabria, Spain. It is considered unique for the quality and quantity of geological formations (speleothems) in its 17 miles length, 6 of which are open to the public. In it are formations such as helíctites (eccentric stalactites defying gravity) and curtains (draperies, or sheets of calcite, sometimes translucent, hanging from the ceiling). Its formation dates back to the Mesozoic, in particular the Cretaceous period 240 million years ago. The entrance is at 540 metres in the Sierra Soplao Arnero.
The cave was accidentally discovered during drilling for mining, subsequently being exploited for the extraction of minerals. During its operation, many local families were supported by the income they got from the mining, combined with farming livestock. After decades of neglect, speleology, and in particular the Cantabria University Speleology Club since 1975, have discovered its true geological value.
On July 1, 2005 the Government of Cantabria opened it to the public and publicised it internationally, after development for tourism and protection rules prohibiting any further activity by the discoverering club. Research goes on, resulting in the study of amber deposits, the recognition of underground stromatolites formed by manganese-oxidising bacteria, and a new mineral form, zaccagnaite-3R.
El Soplao is just one of at least 6,500 caves in Cantabria.

El Soplao es una cueva situada en los municipios de Herrerías, Valdáliga (pueblos de Labarces y Roiz) y Rionansa (pueblo de Celis), en la sierra de Arnero, en Cantabria (España) a una altitud de 540 m. Es considerada una cavidad única a nivel mundial por la calidad y cantidad de las formaciones geológicas (espeleotemas) que alberga en sus 20 kilómetros de longitud total, aunque solo 4 están abiertos al público. En ella se encuentran formaciones poco comunes como helíctitas (estatalactitas excéntricas que desafían la gravedad) y draperies (sábanas o banderas traslúcidas colgando del techo). Las rocas sobre las que se desarrolla el karst que da lugar a la cueva datan del Mesozoico, concretamente del periodo Cretácico, hace 240 millones de años.
La cavidad fue descubierta accidentalmente durante las labores de perforación minera siendo aprovechada posteriormente para la extracción de minerales (en la visita guiada se accede únicamente a dos de las ocho galerías). Los mineros denominaban soplaos a las cavidades kársticas que cortaban en sus trabajos y que creaban fuertes corrientes de aire. Durante su explotación, muchas familias de la zona se sustentaban con los ingresos que obtenían de esa actividad minera, compaginada con la ganadera. Tras décadas de abandono, la espeleología, y en concreto el «Speleo Club Cántabro», S.C.C., desde el año 1975, descubrió su auténtico valor geológico.
El 1 de julio de 2005 el Gobierno de Cantabria la abrió al público después de acondicionar su interior y alrededores para el turismo. Se llega a la entrada de la cueva en un tren minero y el recorrido comienza en una antigua galería de la mina.

Wikipedia - The .American white ibis (Eudocimus albus) is a species of bird in the ibis family, Threskiornithidae. It is found from North Carolina via the Gulf Coast of the United States south through most of the coastal New World tropics. n flight. Males are larger and have longer bills than females. The breeding range runs along the Gulf and Atlantic Coast, and the coasts of Mexico and Central America. Outside the breeding period, the range extends further inland in North America and also includes the Caribbean. It is also found along the northwestern South American coastline in Colombia and Venezuela. Populations in central Venezuela overlap and interbreed with the scarlet ibis. The two have been classified by some authorities as a single species.
Their diet consists primarily of small aquatic prey, such as insects and small fishes. Crayfish are its preferred food in most regions, but it can adjust its diet according to the habitat and prey abundance. Its main foraging behavior is probing with its beak at the bottom of shallow water to feel for and capture its prey. It does not see the prey.
During the breeding season, the American white ibis gathers in huge colonies near water. Pairs are predominantly monogamous and both parents care for the young, although males tend to engage in extra-pair copulation with other females to increase their reproductive success. Males have also been found to pirate food from unmated females and juveniles during the breeding season.
