New 2017 herd of young cattle on Farm, they are housed in shed until warmer weather arrives .

In 2014, Scottish cattle farmers generated a turnover of £837m, some 27.5% of all Scottish agricultural output, from the sale of animals for meat production and breeding. 71% of the cows in Scotland are beef cows and only 29% are dairy cows. During 2014 Scottish abattoirs produced almost 170,000 tonnes of beef almost 20% of the beef produced by UK abattoirs and three-quarters of this was sold to customers outside Scotland.

The above information was derived from data published by the Scottish Government. More information about the shape and scale of Scotland’s red meat industry can be found in the Scottish Red Meat Industry Industry Profile, published by QMS each June.

Minister for the Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison, heard the inspirational stories of some of the winners of a new bursary to encourage healthy, active living in Scotland.

The “Go for It Scotland!” bursary was launched earlier this year by Quality Meat Scotland, working with sportscotland. Individuals, groups and clubs were invited to apply for the twenty £500 bursaries and these will be awarded annually in the run up to Glasgow 2014. Almost a thousand people are set to benefit from the first year’s awards and those meeting the Minister today include 14 year old karate enthusiast Rebecca Stewart from Drumchapel, volunteers and skiers from Disability Snowsport Scotland who train at the Midlothian Snowports Centre, members of the junior Edinburgh-based Inverleith Hockey Club, youngsters from the Glasgow Riderz cycling club and junior members from the Dunbar Running Club. Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport Shona Robison said: "We are determined to leave a lasting active legacy from the 2014 Commonwealth Games and these awards are helping to break down barriers and ensure continued participation in sport. “This bursary is a great way to support people of all ages and abilities and will help them to pay for essentials. I am delighted to meet some of the successful recipients and wish them all the very best of luck in their chosen field.”

Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer (QMS)

This identifies gases by the molecular weight and electrical charge of their ionized states. It will check for several elements important for life as we know it, including carbon, hydrogen, sulfur, nitrtogen, oxygen and phosphorus contained in volatile molecules.

For the first time ever, all 10 NASA field centers participated in a multi-center NASA Social event Dec. 3, previewing the Dec. 4 first flight of the Orion Spacecraft on Exploration Flight Test-1.

Goddard hosted up to 25 social media followers to attend an afternoon celebrating the Orion launch. Attendees toured the Astrobiology Analytical Laboratory, where Martian meteorites and other samples are tested to answer two of the biggest mysteries facing humanity: How did we get here? And are we alone? We'll also tour Goddard's massive Integration and Testing Facility, where spacecraft are built and tested and the world's largest cleanroom where the James Webb Space Telescope is being constructed. Webb is the scientific successor to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. It will be the most powerful space telescope ever built.

Very blurry shot of my ingenious Toblerone stacks. These are located on anything strong enough and wide enough to hold them. Like these QMS chillers!

Song of the week : Big girl (Emilia)

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano (second from left) receives the ISO 9001:2015 certification from TÜV Rheinland Philippines Managing Director Tristan Arwen G. Loveres (second from right). Joining them in this photo are (from left) Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Civilian Security and Consular Concerns Jose Luis G. Montales and OIC-Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Administration Ma. Theresa Dizon-de Vega.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), in its commitment to continually improve its quality management system, officially received the ISO 9001:2015 certification from TÜV Rheinland on 29 August 2018.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano received the certification from TÜV Rheinland Philippines Managing Director Tristan Arwen Loveres in ceremonies held that day at the DFA Auditorium.

The DFA attained its first ISO certification under the ISO 9001:2008 standard in 2016, with the Authentication Division at its Office of Consular Affairs (OCA) in Aseana (DFA-Aseana) as the core process, and authentication-related offices in the Home Office as support.

In 2017, under the subsidy of the Government Quality Management Committee and with guidance from the Development Academy of the Philippines, dedicated DFA personnel worked on the DFA-QMS’ successful transition from ISO 9001:2008 to the ISO 9001:2015 standard. Further, the DFA expanded its QMS to include the regular passport process in DFA-Aseana and the authentication and passport services of DFA NCR West in SM Manila.

The DFA aims to consistently improve the quality of its services, enhance its facilities for more comfort and address client concerns and feedback without undue delay. In addition, through this exercise, the DFA was able to identify the need for better accessibility and will be opening additional consular offices around the country and increasing the roll-out of its Passport-on-Wheels service.

With the ISO 9001:2015 certification, the DFA, under the direction of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and leadership of Secretary Cayetano, endeavors to create an environment of excellence by having well-defined and regularly-reviewed procedures that are responsive to client needs and conform to international standards.
