Just another quickie I knocked up in Bryce a few years ago. I was still learning the ropes at this stage.
There were quite a few pyramidal orchids at Happy Valley in Surrey this year. Most of them were under an inch in height (the flower, not including the stem). This specimen was over two inches in height. The picture was taken with my 17-85 IS lens and a Hoya +4 close-up filter.
The Louvre Pyramid is a large metal and glass pyramid which serves as the main entrance to the Musée du Louvre and has become a landmark for the city of Paris.
Commissioned by the French president François Mitterrand, it was built in 1989 by the architect I. M. Pei from New York, who was responsible for the design of the Miho Museum in Japan among others.
Along the drive from Valle Nuevo NP to Paraiso, on the coast of the Bahoruco Peninsula, we passed and stopped at this stone pyramid, which supposedly marks the exact center of Hispaniola.
These amazing pyramids were built 1000 years before the reign of King Tutankhamen. When Cleopatra came to power, King Tutankhamen had been buried for 1000 years in the Valley of the Kings.

If the pyramid is actually as old as the dates listed, that is pretty amazing. I would love to know the story behind it... The names listed are referred to as Mother, Son, and Father. According to the dates, she died three days after the baby was born... So perhaps the grieving husband build this pyramid as a 1905 tribute to his beloved. The Taj Mahal of San Luis...? Fascinating stuff...
