The Pushkar Fair, or Pushkar ka Mela, is the annual five-day camel and livestock fair, held in the town of Pushkar in the state of Rajasthan, India. It is one of the world's largest camel fairs, and apart from buying and selling of livestock it has become an important tourist attraction and its highlights have become competitions such as the "matka phod", "longest moustache", and "bridal competition" are the main draws for this fair which attracts thousands of tourists
The Pushkar lake has 52 ghats where pilgrims descend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters.
Pushkar is a very sacred place for Hindus. It has one of very few existing Brahma temples in India and it's also the most prominent among them.
Housing in Pushkar seems to be an interesting mix of stunning architecture and detail mixed with a modicum of delapidation -- and plenty of phone and electricity wires!
As holy town, Pushkar has a lot of rules -- no meat or eggs, no alcohol, no public displays of affection... Too bad, because I realllly needed a stiff drink to put up with the vast number of Israeli and European new age hippies who flood the town.
