Ok so I've been working on this flash unit for a while on and off (not so much free time)
The idea is this. car battery, camera trap, BIG HUGE FLASH that can recharge rapidly but not drain the car battery (so it should be efficient)
Also speedy (this IS speedy with a discharge of around 150 microseconds)
It's almost ready for field testing but it is sort of weak (56 joules). This is a limitation of the radio shack bulb, not my design. Right now the flash is set off with a pushbutton that is connected to 600 volts. I don't think my camera will approve =D
ALSO the cap bank will be replaceable with a much smaller and lower inductance module for ~10-20 microsecond flashes (for hummingbirds and the like)
'Swooshy' Star Trek style automatic sliding doors at the ends of the train carriage are operated by these pushbuttons.
The pole terminal cabinet allows for wire to be pulled from the signal cabinet to the T-Can, through the conduit and junction boxes. Another run of wire runs from the T-Can to the signal heads and pushbuttons.
Some agencies do not use terminal cabinets, and have a continuous run of wire between the signal head and the signal cabinet.

This is my modified Yamaha RX-17 I call the Crush and Bang. The Yamaha has been augmented with a 20 point patch bay (green and black banana jacks) as well as 5 patchable toggle switches, 2 patchable momentary pushbuttons, and two patchable potentiometers, 1K ohm and 100 ohm. The exoskeleton is teak.
Anyone try using one of these things lately? The last time i did was about 1982 or so and tried a few times before that as a youngster and still had to wait for the usual amount of time the light cycles were programmed in order to cross.( I usually just made a mad dash across rt.25 scaring the crap outta all the drivers going by just to get some candy and gum. lol) Anyway, i`ll always be convinced this is one of those feel good devices in society that makes a person think that they`re important just for a few minutes.
Overall view of the lower plate. To ensure the holes for the switches lined up, both plates were marked out and drilled together. This accounts for the small pilot holes in the lower plate. In the upper plate these were opened out for the pushbuttons.

An experiment with adding a Giant Push Button to the Bubble Tower elicited what I had hoped for: a focused response!
The BT produces bubbles on an intermittent basis, and this experience draws out a variety of emotional responses, including frustration. After observing a little girl taking off her shoe to strike the BT in the hope of forcing it to create bubbles, I decided to experiment with a Push Button to focus that energy.
Carol is the creator of the Push Button and had great fun "testing" it !
At this event, after some time, one wise young man demonstrated that the Push Button was fake, and removed it, waving it around and declaiming to all how fake it was. I reinstalled the Push Button, and within minutes several kids went back to pushing the button, anxious for more bubbles!

A straightforward project built combining an SFX form-factor power supply with a StaticBoards ATX Board breakout.
All major connector formats are provided: MOLEX, SATA, Banana plugs, screw terminals, and USB power. +5V and +12V, a small form factor that takes little space, and convenient LED status and pushbutton on/off, what's not to like?
The power supply includes a full complement of ATX cables, with the motherboard connector used to power the ATX breakout.
The fun part is that you don't even see the "pushbuttons" with the entry code -- unless somebody clues you in, it's just a black plastic slab

Before calling out, we must dial the area code, then the seven digit number. I don't like it... it's a bitch... Arrrrr... the old way was better! With a lot of large companies, it will take up to two months to re-program their phone systems, including all call boxes in rural areas.
I do realize for some years, other countries have had to dial a ten digits. But...
I still like the ring of an old style telephone. It just sounds better when one calls = )
Telus uses this 1-800 number now.
When I was a nipper most of these old public drinking fountains still used to work. This one is, of course, now dry, but the wear on the pushbutton, so you can just about make out the word 'PUSH'. shows that it did get some use in days gone past.
