This Purple Gallinule was one of many racing around the lake that day. Maybe it was because the January freeze killed of a lot of the vegetation around the lake, and now they could run.
We came across this purple gallinule while visiting Circle B Bar Reserve near Lakeland, Florida. The bird has a beautiful display of color that changes depending on its position toward light. He measures about 13 inches (33 cm) from beak-tip to tail-tip. We believe the green plant floating on the water’s surface is called Duckweed and indicates a healthy microclimate.
Purple Gallinule using it’s wings to balance as it walks through the water plants in the Everglades. They are vegetarians and eat the plants and sardines pods.
Purple Gallinule's are one of the color jewels we have here in Florida. They generally use their huge feet to walk around the vegetation and try to stay away from the other birds. Occasionally, and usually without warning, they take flight from one area of vegetation to another. (Porphyrula martinica)
Immature Purple Gallinules such as this one start out brown and acquire their colors gradually from the chest up during their first year. This bird was photographed along the Anhinga Trail in Florida's Everglades National Park. Its bright yellow legs can be seen beneath the water.

Wakodahatchee Wetlands.
Purple Gallinule
The Purple Gallinule is one of the most beautiful birds in SW Florida. They are usually very shy running out of the underbrush to grab a seed pod and disappearing. This guy put on quite a show yesterday in Shark Valley. The huge yellow feet are well adapted to allow them to walk across Brasenia shreberi (native water Lilies) and reeds. They are vegetarians.
