The County Fair had a lot of fun things to do and see and some very good treats to eat. But nothing feeds the soul like a good ol' fashioned puppet show! I caught a glimpse of behind the scenes as I was leaving the fair.
For those of you that appreciate the finer things in life.
In this scene Mr Punch has just fed the baby into the top of the sausage machine, and is now grinding out a nice string of sausages.
Top quality family entertainment.
We had stopped at a recommended pub in a village while on holiday in the Lake District of England and were delighted to see that the outdoor area was full of families enjoying a Punch and Judy show. Our English friends were caught up in the nostalgia of the traditional performance and we enjoyed both the lunch and the show. Even in our electronically sophisticated world, it hasn't lost its magic.

I think this is a wonderfully weird photograph, especially the double shadows cast by the floodlamps we used to use to counteract the slow speed of the film. My sister, Susan, is the puppeteer. She has just celebrated her 70th birthday. She was born prematurely in June of 1939, and escaped retrolental fibroplasia because they were using the only available Isolettes to hold other preemies who needed oxygen. My brother Robert is wearing some sort of headgear, and David is at the right of the photo. Until I scanned and enlarged it, I didn't see the baby at the same level as the puppet-doll. If it is Baby Sister Marjory, it dates the photo to late 1949 or early 1950 because was toddling when we moved to The Farm in the summer of 1050. This photo was most probably taken by my mother, Olga.
MoDOT employee Margie Mansager sharing information with guests on how they too can adopt-a -highway. Modot has had a wonderful response this year to the adopt-a-highway program. Since the start of the fair we have had over 200 people sign up to join our 6,200 miles of already adopted roadways. While at the fair please stop by our gardens and visit with our staff ,Missouri has 36,000 miles of roadway, so there are plenty miles left to adopt.
When we were kids, Phoebe and I liked to put on puppet shows (I mean, c'mon, who DOESN'T). Dad constructed a small theater out of a refridgerator box and colored poster board.
This old man handles the noisiest percussion instrument of all in the show. See him striking the gong (锣) and cymbal (鈸) with relish! He also controls the Chinese drum and mu yu (木鱼) among others. The lady controlling the puppet must be a newcomer to the troupe. A lady trainer sitting on the right gets up twice to give pointers. The string puller has to stand up and is the voice behind the puppet. One has to have a good loud voice and strong biceps and triceps! This one was near temple at carpark of Blk 119.
