Myanmar puppets, or Yoke thé, are a traditional form of Burmese marionette theatre that uses intricately carved wooden puppets controlled by a single puppeteer with many strings. The art form dates back to the late 18th century, with performances that can last all night and feature elaborate storylines from epics like the Ramayana and mythological tales. Today, they are both a popular form of entertainment and a common souvenir.

Hand puppet pattern by Sherry Graziano. The pattern is in the Winter 2008/09 issue of Knit Simple Magazine. Note: there is an error in the pattern. A correction is available on the Knit Simple website, but it's a little off too.

Poison Ivy joined the cast today. The basic construction is similar to the other plants...foam rubber and Noodles for the shaft plus some Dollar Tree vines around ropes. I found Ivy vines, but I had to add a third leaf to each group of two. ("Leaves of three, leave them be.") I also put a dab of hot glue at the base of each leaf pair to keep them from popping off the vine. The face started with an old smiling "Scream" mask, spray painted green. Unfortunately, the paint wasn't campatible and stayed sticky. I used some talc to dry the surface out. I then added some left over Halloween eyeballs and a nose. Leaves were added to the face. The edges of the leaves were used to reduce the size of the eye sockets and the mouth. Purple eyelinger and lipstick were painted on. The operator holds a handle on the back of the head and uses a pair of rods to operate the arm vines.

A more macabre selection, hides behind commands ..... desire ... fantasy and blood .....

Bob Pelham began making puppets in 1947 after he obtained some help from Jan Bussell and Ann Hogarth (who used to operate Muffin the Mule on TV) with designing puppets that would be simple enough for young children to use. Pelham Puppets also made the Stingray characters. Pelham Puppets are still in business.

Clay sculpt of my puppet head, inspired by fantasy art such as The Dark Crystal and developed from my CG sculpt. Changes include larger exaggerated wrinkles, larger (friendlier) eyes and a larger more expressive mouth. This will be moulded in a three-part mould and re-cast in latex, which will be added to the rest of the body (a half body without legs, due to time constraints). The mouth will be operated by a hand inserted under the body.

The Reluctant Dragon - starts July 15, 2022

Kenneth Graham’s fanciful tale of dragons comes to life in grand Fairyland style. Everyone, except a little boy, believes that a terrible fire-breathing dragon lives “up” on the “downs.” They are scared, so they send for St. George, the famous dragon slayer. But everyone has the wrong idea. St. George couldn’t hurt a fly, and our terrible dragon writes poetry and sings opera! What will a village do? Puppets by Patricia Platt, with scenery and script by Lewis Mahlmann.

The puppet's name is Slappy. I made him out of dumptser scrounged styrofoam the night before a shoot. His head once protected a home stereo.

He was supposed to resemble Robert Deniro.
